and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil. The fear of man bringth a
snare: but whoso putteth bis trust in the Lord shall be safe. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence ; and bis children shall have a place of refuge.
On righteousness, and the happiness of the righteous.
Blessed is the man that hath not slipped with his mouth, and is not pricked with the multitude of sins. Blessed is he whose conscience hath not condemned him, and who is not fallen from his hope in the Lord. Blessed is the man that doth meditate good things in wisdom, and that reasoneth of holy things by his understanding.
Book of Wisdom.
Love righteousness, ye that be judges of the earth"; think of the Lord with a good heart, and in simplicity of heart seek him. For he will be found of them that tempt him not : and sheweth himself unto such as do not distrust him. For froward thoughts separate from God ; and his power, when it is tried, reproveth the unwise. For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter : vor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin. For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit, and remove from thoughts that are without understanding, and will not abide when righteousness cometh in. And if a man love righteousness, her labours are virtues : for she teacheth temperance and prudence, justice and fortitude : which are such things, as men can have nothing more profitable in their life.
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty : for he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole. He shall deliver thee in six troubles : yea, in seven, there shall no evil touch thee. In famine he shall redeem thee from death; and in war froin the
of the sword. Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh. At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh : nei
ther shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth. And thou shalt know that thy tabcrnacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin. Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth. Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in, in his season.
Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy goou.
Ile that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppress. ions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes fiom seeing evil; he shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks : bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. Thus saith the Lord, Keep ye judgment, and do justice : for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it;
that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. Also the sons of the stranger that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, and to love the name of the Lord, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant. Even unto them will I give in mine house, and within my walls, a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters: I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off. Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar: for
house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit. The heart
is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments: which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nationsof the earth: and all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God. Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep. Blessed shall be thy basket, and thy store. Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out. The Lord shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face : they shall come out against thee one way, and flee before thee seven ways. "The Lord shall
