sins; to receive the adoption of a child,
according to the good pleasure of his
will, and the riches of his free, abound
ing grace, Eph. i. 5---7. Yes, it is that
earnest of the glorious inheritance above,
mentioned verse the 14th, which my
longing soul would have. Truly they
who persevere in seeking, will not seek in
vain. My dear parents, you are now
drawing apace to your journey's end,
the close of your pilgrimage; the short
time here allotted you is almost expend
ed, and the time of your departure is at
hand. O exulting departure for the
dying saints in the Lord! They rest
from their labours, Rev. xiv. 14. Your
hopes, I trust, bloom with immortality,
when realizing those future, near ap-
proaching joys, laid up in store for those
who remain faithful to the end, Rev. ii.
jo. Your anchor, I hope, is fixed with-
in the vail, whither our Forerunner is
entered for us, Heb. vi. 19, 20. The
Lord prepare you for an abundant en-
trance" into the everlasting Kingdom of
our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ."
There, with loud acclamations of joy,
may you receive, or be received by, as
shall seen good to the Lord, your two
present affectionate children, to part no
more. Then you will be no more be-
reaved of a son by cruel war's alarms,
nor mourn deceased offspring: but, free
from care and toil, range with joy the
ethereal plains, and drink unmingled
love, Rev. vii. 17.

Thurs. Oct. 29. This is my birth-day. You see surely I am a monument of God's long-suffering mercy. Better thau 19 of those twenty-one years I spent, alas! in departing from, sinning against, and, oh! sad to relate! flying in the face of the Lord; who has, notwithstanding, stood my kiud Protector. It is because he is the Lord unchangeable that I am not consumed, Mal. iii. 6. May I not with astonishment exclaim, "Is not this a brand," a consuming brand, miraculously "plucked out of the fire?" Zech. iii. 2. And, oh, what cause have you, my parents, to rejoice with holy joy, that you have been the second cause of my seeking the Lord! He has, I trust, heard your many faithful and fervent prayers for me; for the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous avail with him, James v. 16. From this birth-day, may I be enabled to be more diligent after a second birth, even a new birth unto righteousness.

you, to have nothing but low, humble, abased thoughts of your son, or any thing written as from him: but beseech the Lord to give me all meekness, humility, with those precious fruits of the Spirit mentioned in Gal, v. 22, 23, and that grace, charity; (1 Cor. xiii. 4---7;) for in the sight of God they are of great price. Be patient, my parents, for eternity is nigh. He who raised a young man who was corporally dead,.and who has, I trust, quickened me who was dead in sin, (Eph. ii. 1,) may perhaps, in his own good time deliver me to my parents.

Extract of a Letter from the Rev. FRAN
CIS ASBURY, to Mr. ZACHARY MYLES,
BALTIMORE.

Buncombe, North Carolina, Dec. 3, 1812.
My dear Brother,

ALL hail in Jesus! Excuse my long delay in answering your letters. I rode by day, and wrote by night. In my letters, I write as a fool, when I say, we have (I mean the superintendants in Co.) visited nine annual Conferences, and the general Conference, with nine Campmeetings. The latter excelled in life, multitudes, and power. While attending those meetings, my soul was inexpressibly blest; and in reading Mr. Benson's excellent Life of Fletcher, my soul was brought into God, deeply into love. This has sweetened the toils of between 4 and 5000 miles travelling. With humble surprise, I found that our Western Con ferences gave an account of about 12,000 increase. Emigrations, earthquakes, &c. have been made favourable to the work of God. We have high expectations, that the light affliction will work for our good; that all orders among us will be humbled, and consent to hear the word of God; and that thousands, if not millions, shall see the salvation of the Gospel.

We shall find it necessary to appoint another Conference in the West, upon Mississippi, and form an annual episcopal circuit of ten Conferences. This Circuit, to be travelled in nine months, is about 6000 miles, and reaches completely round the United States. Thus hath God in the space of forty two years, enlarged our borders.

Now, my friend, let us strive to close life in perfect love, in order to our obtaining perfect glory. Farewell. T. ASBURY.

CHURCH MISSIONARY SOCIETY, FOR

AFRICA AND THE EAST.

On Tuesday, May 4, was held the THIRTEENTH ANNIVERSARY of this Institution.

The Members of the London Church Missionary Association, formed in the Metropolis in aid of the Parent Society, breakfasted together at the New London Tavern, when a Report was agreed on to be presented to the General Meeting of the Society, from which it appeared that near £ 500 had been raised by the Association, in the few months since its formation, by congregational collections and by weekly and monthly contributions.

The Annual Sermon, before the Right Hon the President, Vice Presidents, and other Members, was preached at the parish Church of St. Ann, Blackfriars, by the Reverend WILLIAM DEALTRY, B. D. F. R. S. Examining Chaplain to the Lord Bishop of Bristol; Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy in the East India College; and Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. In this seasonable, eloquent, and masterly discourse, the preacher, from 2 Cor. v. 14, "The love of Christ constraineth us,” made an appeal in behalf of India, which had great effect on his audience, and must be felt by every unprejudiced and conscientious man whom it reaches. A collection was made after the sermon, which amounted to nearly 250l.

At two o'clock the Annual General Meeting was held at the New London Tavern, the Right Hon. Lord Gambier, President, in the Chair, attended by Lord Viscount Galway, the Dean of Wells, Mr. Wilberforce, Mr. H.Thornton, Mr Grant, Mr. Babington. Mr. Kemp, Mr. C. Noel Noel, Col. Macaulay, and from five to six hundred ladies and gentlemen, among whom were members and friends of the Society from Bristol, Birmingham, Cambridge, and various other places.

The Noble President read, in part, the report of the proceedings during the year; the details of which were furnished by the Secretary, the Rev. Josiah Pratt. From the report it appeared, that the Committee had been actively engaged during the preceding year; and had laboured with great success, in extending the influence and operations of the society Three Special General Meetings of the Society had been held since the twelfth Anniversary. In addition to the settlemen's of Bashia and Canoffee, on the Rio Pongas, on the Western coast of Africa, a third had been formed at Yongroo, on the Bullom Shore; and the Mis

sionary Butscher, who had spent some time in this country, had returned to Africa, accompanied by three mechanics and their wives, with an investment of stores, & am unting nearly to 3000l. for the use of the settlements and schools, and for the establishment of a fourth settlement, on the Rio Dembia, which is to be named Gambier, in token of respect to the Noble President of the Society. The report indicated much care and anxiety on the part of the Committee, to furnish Mr. Butscher and his brethren with such regulations as were best likely to secure and advance the religious interests of the settlements and the natives. The society is about to send a clergyman, on a missionary voyage and journey, into the Levant; and Dr. Naudi, of Malta, who was present at the meeting, has very kindly engaged to accompany him. Mr. Thomas Kendall, with his wife and six children, had just sailed under the protection of Government, to strengthen a settlement projected by the society, in New Zealand. The introduction of Christianity into India had engaged very deeply the attention of the Committee. A deputation had held several conferences with his Ma jesty's Ministers on the subject, whose favourable disposition toward the great object was reported to the Meeting. An able and learned work, entitled, "Colonial Ecclesiastical Establishment," had been written by Dr. Claudius Buchanan, at the request of the Committee, copies of which had been sent, in his name, at the charge of the Society, to about 800 Members of both Houses; and the Committee had, in various other ways, employed the press in endeavouring to awaken the public to the spiritual inte rests of our Indian Empire. Resolutions had been passed at a Special General Meeting, held on this subject, and Peti tions grounded thereon had been presented to both Houses. Two Lutheran Ministers and three English Students have been received under the protection of the society. Missionary Associations had been formed in various places; and particularly one at Bristol (some leading members of which were present) on a magnificent scale, under the patronage of his Grace the Duke of Beaufort, which had produced already 2000l. Weekly and Monthly contributions were strongly urged; and a disposition to form Associ ations with a view to collect these, and to further the interests of the society by congregational collections and annual subscriptions, was manifesting itself throughout the Empire.

After the report had been received and ordered to be printed, the especial thanks of the society were unanimously voted to the Friends at Bristol and elsewhere, who assisted in the formation of the Bristol Church Missionary Association: the Meeting also passed a resolution earnestly urging the general establishment of associations throughout the empire, and returning its cordial thanks to those persons who had formed, or were forming, such associations. It was also determined, for the encouragement of weekly and monthly contributions, that "every person who shall collect in behalf of the society, 1s. or upward per week, or 5s. or upward per month, shall be a member of the society; and shall be entitled to attend and vote at all meetings, to receive a copy of each Annual Report and Sermon, and a copy of each number of the Missionary Register, and to have their names inserted in the lists of the society." Thanks were returned to the Rev. Mr. Dealtry, for his able and impressive sermon: two thousand copies were ordered to be printed immediately, without waiting for the Report, and the Members of both Houses to be The immediately furnished with them. was appointed a Vice-President. A Committee was nominated for the ensuing year; and thanks were returned to the Secretary for his exertion, and to the Noble President for his zeal in behalf of the society, and for his conduct in the chair.

Many gentlemen addressed the meeting, the tendency of whose eloquent speeches was such as is always to be wished in an assembly convened for the grand purpose of communicating the gospel to the heathen world-to excite a spirit of prayer, liberality, exertion, humble confidence, and persevering zeal.

The Rev. BASIL WOODD preached on Wednesday evening, May 5, before the Members and Friends of the London Church Missionary Association, at the Church of St. Lawrence Jewry, Guildhall; when the sum of £51 18s. 3 d. was collected, which was nearly all in sil ver, and proved, from the multitude of sixpences and shillings put into the plates, that many of the poorer members of the Church who cannot attend the morning Sermon on the Anniversary are yet anxious to aid the cause of Missions. It is proposed to continue this Wednesday evening Sermon annually.

Rev, Sir, In reading over" An Address from a Cler. by R. VALPY, gyman to his Parishioners,' D. D. F. A. S. Rector of Stradishall, Suffolk, I met with the following Verses, extracted from Hannah More's Tracts, illustrating the union of Faith and Works. The author observes, that the late Bishop of London told him that he did not know a better exposition of the union of Faith and Works. If you think them worthy of a place in your very valuable Magazine, their insertion will much Rev. Sir, oblige, Your's respectfully, And affectionately, J. C. And, undisputing, straight obey'd." The heav'nly word he did not doubt, But prov'd his Faith by going out." Jane answer'd with some little pride: "I've an example on my side; And tho' my tale be somewhat longer, I trust you'll find it vastly stronger. I'll tell you, Daniel, of a man, The holiest since the world began ; Who now God's favour is receiving, For prompt obeying, not believing. One only son this man possess'd, In whom his righteous age was blest;

FAITH AND WORKS.-A TALE.
Good Dan and Jane were man and wife,
And lived a loving kind of life.
One point, however, they disputed,
And each by turns his mate confuted.
"Twas Faith and Works, this knotty question,
They found not easy of digestion.
While Dan for Faith alone contended,
Jane equally Good Works defended.
"They are not Christians, sure, but Turks,
Who build on Faith and scoff at Works,"

"No, Abraham's he I mean," says Dan.
"He stands a monument of Faith."

"No, 'tis for Works, the Scripture saith,"
"'Tis for this Faith that I defend him."

And lose their temper in their zeal.
Too quick each other's choice to blame,
They did not see each meant the same.
At length, "Good wife," said honest Dan,
"We're talking of the self-same man.
The Works you praise, I own indeed,
Grow from that Faith, for which I plead.
And Abraham, whom for Faith I quote,
For Works deserves especial note.
'Tis not enough of Faith to talk :
A man of God with God must walk.
Our doctrines are at last the same,
They only differ in the name.
The Faith, I fight for, is the root;
The Works, you value, are the fruit.
How shall you know my creed's sincere,
Unless in Works my Faith appear?
How shall I know a tree's alive,
Unless I see it bear and thrive?
Your Works not growing on my root,
Would prove they were not genuine fruit.
If Faith produce no Works, I see,
That Faith is not a living tree.
Thus Faith and Works together grow,
No separate life they e'er can know.
They're soul and body, hand and heart;
What God hath join'd, let no man part!"
