Veiled in flesh the Godhead see!
Hail the incarnate Deity!

Pleased as Man with man to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel.

Hark! the herald-angels sing,—
Glory to the new-born King.

3 Hail, the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail, the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings,
Risen with healing in His wings.
Mild he lays His glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.
Hark! the herald-angels sing,-
Glory to the new-born King.

When they saw the star they rejoiced with exceeding

great joy.

"We have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.

1 BRIGHTEST and best of the sons of the

morning!

Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid! Star of the east, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!

2 Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining, Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall;

Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,
Maker, and Monarch,. and Saviour of all.

3 Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odours of Edom, and offerings divine,
Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the
mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gifts would His favour secure : Richer by far is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

5 Brightest and best of the sons of the morning!
Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid!
Star of the east, the horizon adorning,
Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid!

Ye that feel the tempter's power,
Your Redeemer's conflict see;
Watch with Him one bitter hour:
Turn not from His griefs away:
Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.

2 Follow to the judgment-hall;
View the Lord of life arraigned.
O the wormwood and the gall!
O the pangs His soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss:
Learn of Him to bear the cross.

3 Calvary's mournful mountain climb; There, adoring at His feet,

Mark that miracle of timeGod's own sacrifice complete. "It is finished!" hear Him cry : Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

OUR LORD'S DEATH.

WHEN I survey the wondrous

cross

On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
Save in the cross of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

3 See from His head, His hands, His feet,

Sorrow and love flow mingling down;
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my life, my soul, my all.

"God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ."

1 WE sing the praise of Him who died—

Of Him who died upon the cross;
The sinner's hope let men deride,
For this we count the world but loss.
2 Inscribed upon the cross we see,
In shining letters, "God is love;"
He bears our sins upon the tree,
He brings us mercy from above.
3 The cross! it takes our guilt away;
It holds the fainting spirit up;
It cheers with hope the gloomy day,
And sweetens every bitter cup.

4 It makes the coward spirit brave,
And nerves the feeble arm for fight;
It takes its terror from the grave,
And gilds the bed of death with light;-

5 The balm of life, the cure of woe,
The measure and the pledge of love,
The sinner's refuge here below,
The angels' theme in heaven above.

2 How pale art Thou with anguish,
With sore abuse and scorn!
How does that visage languish,
Which once was bright as morn!

3 O Lord of life and glory,

What bliss till now was Thine!
I read the wondrous story,
I joy to call Thee mine.

4 Thy grief and Thy compassion
Were all for sinners' gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression,
But Thine the deadly pain.

5 What language shall I borrow,
To praise Thee, heavenly Friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?

6 Lord, make me Thine for ever,
Nor let me faithless prove;
O let me never, never
Abuse such dying love!

7 Be near me, Lord, when dying;
Show Thou Thyself to me;
And, for my succour flying,
Come, Lord, to set me free:

8 These eyes, new faith receiving,
From Jesus shall not move;

For he who dies believing,

Dies safely through Thy love.

1 BOUND upon the accursed tree,

Faint and bleeding, who is He?
By the eyes so pale and dim,
Streaming blood and writhing limb;
By the flesh with scourges torn,
By the crown of twisted thorn,
By the side so deeply pierced,
By the baffled burning thirst,
By the drooping death-dewed brow-
Son of Man! 'tis Thou, 'tis Thou!

2 Bound upon the accursed tree,
Dread and awful, who is He?
By the sun at noonday pale,
Shivering rocks and rending veil;
By earth, that trembles at His doom;
By yonder saints that burst their tomb;
By Eden, promised ere He died
To the felon at His side;
Lord, our suppliant knees we bow-
Son of God! 'tis Thou, 'tis Thou!

3 Bound upon the accursed tree,
Sad and dying, who is He?
By the last and bitter cry,
The ghost given up in agony;
By the lifeless body laid
In the chamber of the dead;

By the mourners come to weep
Where the bones of Jesus sleep;

4 Lives again our glorious King!
Where, O Death, is now thy sting?
Once He died our souls to save;
Where's thy victory, O Grave?

5 Soar we now where Christ hath led,
Following our exalted Head:
Made like Him, like Him we rise;
Ours the cross, the grave, the skies.

6 Hail the Lord of earth and heaven!
Praise to Thee by both be given:
Thee we greet triumphant now;
Hail, the Resurrection Thou!

7 King of glory, Soul of bliss,
Everlasting life is this,

Thee to know, Thy power to prove,
Thus to sing, and thus to love!

"He is risen, as He said." HRIST the Lord is risen to-day,"

CHR

Sons of men, and angels, say: Raise your songs of triumph high; Sing, ye heavens; and, earth, reply.

Love's redeeming work is done,
Fought the fight, the battle won;

Lo, our Sun's eclipse is o'er!

Lo, He sets in blood no more!

Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ hath burst the gates of hell: Death in vain forbids His rise; Christ hath opened paradise.
