Several applications made have been unanswered, probably from the difficulty of accurately ascertaining the author's address or the name of the original publisher. Several more applications should perhaps have been made, but were prevented by inability to find even a likely address. It is hoped that this will be accepted in all such cases as sufficient apology for the omission in part of this duty. NOTE. THE Tunes in the present work have been selected with great care by the Committee; while the revision of the Harmonies and the general superintendence of the music have been entrusted to Mr. Monk of London, the wellknown musical editor of "Hymns Ancient and Modern." To Sir Henry Baker, Bishop Jenner, Dr. Dykes, Dr. Monk of York, and others, special acknowledgments are due for granting permission to use many of the beautiful Copyright Tunes which appear in the work. The right to use others has been purchased from the various proprietors. NUMBERING OF THE TUNES. In numbering the Tunes it has been considered advisable to use the same numbers which the Tunes bear in the "Church of Scotland Psalm and Hymn Tune Book" (1871 Edition). This will explain why certain numbers (for instance, 1, 2, 4, &c.) are omitted in the present work. Uniformity in numbering the Tunes is thus preserved in the various publications issued under the superintendence of the Church's Committee. At the same time, this book is complete in itself, and contains Tunes for all the Hymns in the Hymnal. Owing to the space required for the full music for the Te Deum, the Committee have given only a few simple chants, leaving it to congregations to provide themselves with the full music from any of the well-known cheap publications. *The present work is published under an arrangement made between Messrs. BLACKWOOD AND SONS, publishers of the "Hymnal," and Messrs. NELSON AND SONS, publishers of "The Church of Scotland Psalm and Hymn Tune Book." NOTE.
