65.

The Lord of hosts, the Mighty God,
The Eternal Prince of Peace.

"Tis Thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,

To pour fresh life on every part,
And new-create the whole.

Dwell, therefore, in our hearts;

Our minds from bondage free;

Then shall we know and praise and love The Father, Son, and Thee.

Tune-Veni Creator, 40.

"The Spirit like a dove descending."

COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

My sinful maladies remove; Be Thou my Light, be Thou my Guide, O'er every thought and step preside. 2 The light of truth to me display,

That I may know and choose my way;
Plant holy fear within mine heart,
That I from God may ne'er depart.

3 Conduct me safe, conduct me far
From every sin and hurtful snare;
Lead me to God, my final Rest,
In his enjoyment to be blest.

4 Lead me to Christ, the Living Way,
Nor let me from His pastures stray;
Lead me to heaven, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.

L.M.

5 Lead me to holiness, the road

That I must take to dwell with God; Lead to Thy Word, that rules must give, And sure directions how to live.

6 Lead me to means of grace, where I
May own my wants, and seek supply:
Lead to Thyself, the Spring from whence
To fetch all quickening influence.

7 Thus I, conducted still by Thee,
Of God a child beloved shall be;
Here to His family pertain,
Hereafter with Him ever reign.

THOU

Chaos and darkness heard, And took their flight,

Hear us, we humbly pray,

And where the Gospel-day

Sheds not its glorious ray

Let there be light!

2 Thou, who didst come to bring

On Thy redeeming wing

Healing and sight,

Health to the sick in mind,

Sight to the inly blind,
O now to all mankind
Let there be light!

3 Spirit of truth and love,
Life-giving holy Dove,

Speed forth Thy flight;
Move on the waters' face,

68.

Spreading the beams of grace,
And in earth's darkest place
Let there be light!

4 Blessed and holy Three,
Glorious Trinity,

1

Wisdom, Love, Might; Boundless as ocean's tide,

Rolling in fullest pride,

Through the earth far and wide, Let there be light!

69.

2 What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle,
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile?
In vain with lavish kindness

The gifts of God are strown,
The heathen in his blindness

Bows down to wood and stone.
3 Can we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
Can we to men benighted
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation, O salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation

Has learnt Messiah's name.

4 Waft, waft, ye winds, His story;
And you, ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole;
Till o'er our ransomed nature
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,

In bliss returns to reign.

MISSIONS.

Tune-Wittemburg, 252. 7,6,7,6 double. "Blessed be His glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with His glory,"

[blocks in formation]

He comes to break oppression,
To set the captive free,
To take away transgression,
And rule in equity.

2 He shall come down like showers
Upon the fruitful earth;
And love, joy, hope, like flowers,
Spring in His path to birth:
Before Him, on the mountains
Shall peace, the herald, go;
And righteousness, in fountains,
From hill to valley flow.

3 Arabia's desert ranger

To Him shall bow the knee;

The Ethiopian stranger

His glory come to see:

With offerings of devotion,

Ships from the isles shall meet, To pour the wealth of ocean

In tribute at His feet.

4 Kings shall fall down before Him,
And gold and incense bring;
All nations shall adore Him,

His praise all people sing:
For He shall have dominion
O'er river, sea, and shore
Far as the eagle's pinion,

Or dove's light wing, can soar.

5 For Him shall prayer unceasing And daily vows ascend;

His kingdom still increasing,
A kingdom without end;

Tune Warrington, 45.

"All nations shall serve Him."

JESUS shall reign where'er the sun

L.M

Does his successive journeys run; His kingdom stretch from shore to shore, Till moons shall wax and wane no more. 2 For Him shall endless prayer be made, And praises throng to crown His head; His name like sweet perfume shall rise With every morning sacrifice.

3 People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on His love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings on His name.
4 Blessings abound where'er He reigns;
The prisoner leaps to lose his chains;
The weary find eternal rest,
And all the sons of want are blest.

72.

10 THAT the Lord's Salvation

Were out of Zion come,

To heal His ancient nation, To lead His outcasts home. 2 How long the holy city

Shall heathen feet profane?
Return, O Lord, in pity!

Rebuild her walls again.

3 Let fall Thy rod of terror,
Thy saving grace impart;
Roll back the veil of error,
Release the fettered heart.

4 Let Israel, home returning,
Her lost Messiah see;

Give oil of joy for mourning,
And bind Thy Church to Thee.
