tine said unto David, "Am I a dog, that "thou comest to me with staves ?" and the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44. And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give thy flesh "unto the fowls of the air, and to "the beasts of the field." 45. Then said David to the Philistine, "Thou comest to me with a sword, and "with a spear, and with a shield; but "I come to thee in the name of the "LORD of hosts, the God of the armies "of Israel, whom thou hast defied. "46. This day will the LORD deliver "thee into mine hand, and I will smite "thee, and take thine head from thee, "and I will give the carcases of the "host of the Philistines this day unto "the fowls of the air, and to the wild "beasts of the earth; that all the earth

may know that there is a God in Israel. "47. And all this assembly shall know "that the LORD saveth not with sword "and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, "and he will give you into our hands." 48. And it came to pass when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49. And David put his hand into his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with

a stone, and smote the Philistine and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51. Therefore David ran and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead they fled. 52. And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron: and the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way of Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 53. And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents. 54. And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. 55. And (b) when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner the captain of the host, "Abner, whose son is this youth?" And Abner said, "As thy soul liveth, O king, "I cannot tell." 56. And the king said, " Enquire thou whose son this "stripling is." 57. And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58. And Saul said to him, "Whose son art thou, thou young man ?" And David answered, "I am the son of thy servant Jesse the "Bethlehemite."

II. SAMUEL.

AND the LORD (c) sent Nathan unto David: and he came unto him, and said unto him, "There were two men in one "city, the one rich, and the other poor. "2. The rich man had exceeding many "flocks and herds: 3. But the poor man had nothing save one little ewe"lamb, which he had bought and nou"rished up and it grew up together "with him, and with his children; it "did eat of his own meat, and drank of

"Thus saith the LORD God of "Israel, "I anointed thee king over Is“rael, and I delivered thee out of the "hand of Saul: 8. And I gave thee thy "master's house, and thy master's wives "into thy bosom, and gave thee the "house of Israel and of Judah; and if "that had been too little, I would more"over have given unto thee such and "such things (d). 9. Wherefore hast "thou despised the commandment of "the LORD, to do evil in his sight? "thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite "with the sword, and hast taken his "wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him

and it was very sick. 16. David therefore besought God for the child, and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth. 17. And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. 18. And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died: and the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, "Behold, while the child was yet alive,

David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants,

"Thus saith the "LORD, "Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, " and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neigh"bour, and he shall lie (g) with thy "wives in the sight of this sun. 12. For "thou didst it secretly: but I will do "this thing before all Israel, and before "the sun." 13. And David said unto Nathan, "I have sinned against the "LORD." And Nathan said unto David, "The LORD also hath put away thy sin; "thou shalt not die. 14. Howbeit, be"cause by this deed thou hast given

"He is dead." 20. Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD and worshipped: then he came to his own house, and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat. 21. Then said his servants unto him, "What thing is this that thou hast "done? Thou didst fast and weep for "the child while it was alive, but when "the child was dead, thou didst rise "and eat bread." 22. And he said, "While the child was yet alive, I fasted "and wept: for I said, "Who can tell "whether God will be gracious to me, "that the child may live." 23. But now "he is dead, wherefore should I fast? "can I bring him back again? I shall

go to him, but he shall not return to "me." 24. And David comforted Bath sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon; and the LORD loved him. 25. And he sent

heinous conduct, of which he bitterly re pented.

(g) v. 11. "Lie with, &c." This was fulfilled by Absalom. He "went in unto "his father's concubines, in the sight of "all Israel," that the people might be sure he would not be reconciled to David, and might therefore be the less afraid to follow - very him. 1 Sam. xvi. 21, 22.

by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name Jedidiah (h), because (i) of the LORD. 26. And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the (k) royal city. 27. And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, "I have fought against Rab"bah, and have (1) taken the city of 66 waters. 28. Now therefore, gather "the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: "lest I take the city, and it be called after my name." 29. And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. 30 And he took their king's crown from off his head, (the weight whereof was a talent of gold, with the precious stones) and it was set on David's head: and he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance. 31. And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

Then the king rose, and sat in the gate: and they told unto all the people, saying, "Behold, the king doth sit in "the (o) gate:" and all the people came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent. 9.
