Now to the Lamb that once was flain, .

Be endless bleffings paid;

Salvation, glory, joy remain,

For ever on thy head.

2, 6,

HE lands that long in darkness lay,
Now haye beheld a heav'nly light;
Nations that fat in death's cold shade,
Are bleft with beams divinely bright.

2 The virgin's promis'd Son is born;
Behold th' expected child appear,
What fhall his names or titles be?
The wonderful, the counsellor.

3 This infant is the mighty God,
Come to be fuckl'd and ador'd;
Th' Eternal Father, prince of peace,
The fon of David and his Lord.

4

The government of earth and feas,
Upon his fhoulders fhall be laid;
His wide dominions fhall increase,
And Honours to his name be paid.

5 Jefus the holy child fhall fit,
High on his father David's throne;

[blocks in formation]

Shall crufh his foes beneath his feet,
And reign to ages yet unknown.

CVI. Bleffed are the Dead that die in the Lord. Rev. xiv. 13.

H

EAR what the voice from heav'n proclaims,
For all the pious dead;

Sweet is the Savour of their names,
And foft their fleeping bed.

2 They die in Jefus, and are blefs'd;
How kind their flumbers are!
From fuff'rings and from fins releas'd,
And free from ev'ry fnare.

3

Far from this world of toil and ftrife,
Thy're present with the Lord;

The labours of their mortal life,

End in a large reward.

CVII. Hope of Heaven by the Resurrection of Chrift, 1 Pet, i. 3, 4, 5.

'BLESS'D be the everlasting God,

The Father of our Lord';

Be his abounding mercy prais'd,

His Majefty ador'd.

2 When from the dead he rais'd his fon,
And call'd him to the sky,

He gave our fouls a lively hope,
That they fhould never die.

3

What tho' our inbred fins require,
Our flel to fee the duft;

Yet as the Lord our faviour rofe,
So all his followers muft.

4 There's an inheritance divine,
Referv'd against that day;
'Tis uncorrupted, undefil'd,
And cannot waste away.

5 Saints by the pow'r of God are kept,
Till the falvation come;

We walk by faith, as ftrangers here,1 'Till Chrift fhall call us home.

CVIII. The Chriftian Race. Ifa.

[blocks in formation]

WAKE our fouls, away our fears;
Let ev'ry trembling thought begone:.

Awake, and run the heav'nly race,
And put a chearful courage on.

2 True, 'tis a strait and thorny road,
And mortal fpirits tire and faint,...

But they forget the mighty God,

That feeds the ftrength of ev'ry faint..

3 The mighty God, whose matchless pow'r,
Is ever new, and ever young,

And firm endures while endless years
Their everlasting circles run.

From thee the over-flowing spring,
Our fouls fhall drink a fresh fupply;
While fuch as truft their native strength,
Shall melt away, and droop and die.

5 Swift as an eagle cuts the air,

We'll mount aloft to thine abode; On wings of love our fouls fhall fly, Nor tire amidst the heav'nly road.

CIX. The Works of Mofes and the Lamb. Rev. xv. 3.

[ocr errors]

OW ftrong thy arm is mighty God!
Who wou'd not fear thy name?

Jefus, how fweet thy beauties are!

Who would not love the Lamb?

2 He has done more than Mofes did,
Our prophet and our king :
From bonds of hell, he freed our fouls,
And taught our lips to fing.

3 In the red fea, by Mofes' hand,

Th' egyptian-hoft was drown'd: But his own blood hides all our fin,

And guilt no more is found.

4 When thro' the defart Ifra'l went,
With Manna they were fed;
Our Lord invites us to his flef,.
And calls it living bread.

5 Mofes beheld the promis'd land,
Yet never reach'd the place :

1

But Chrift fhall bring his followers home,
To fee his Father's face.

6 Then fhall our love and joy be full,
And feel a warmer flame;
And sweeter voices tune the fong,
Of Mofes and the Lamb.

Preferving Grace. Jude
24. 25.

O God the only wife,
Our Saviour and our king,
Let all the faints below the skies,
Their humble praises bring.

2 "Tis his Almighty love,

[ocr errors]

His counfel and his care,
Preferves us fafe from fin and death,
And ev'ry hurtful fnare.

3 He will present our fouls,
Unblemish'd and compleat,
Before the glory of his face,
With joys divinely great.
