Defign'd for nobler ends than they;
With God's own image bleft.

The young creation ftood;

HE Lord Jebaab reigns,
His throne is built on high;

The garments he affumes

Are light and majesty:
His glories faine

With beams fo bright,
No mortal eye
Can bear the fight.

2 The thunders of his hand

Keep the wide world in awe;
His wrath and juftice ftand,
To guard his holy law:

And where his love
Refolves to blefs,
His truth confirms
And feals the grace.

3 Thro' all his antient works
Surprising wisdom fhines;
Confounds the pow'rs of hell,
And breaks their curst designs:

UR dearest friends depart and die,
Their abfence makes us grieve;

But to the Lord their fpirits fly

This doth our minds relieve.

2 No more fhall they to us return,
But we to them shallɛgo :
To blissful realms, our fpirits borne,
Shall dwell with Jesus too.

3 There glory fits on ev'ry face,
Love fimiles in ev'ry eye:
There fhall our tongues adore the grace,
That brought us safe on high.

4 Bleft fouls! we leave them to enjoy Their JESUS, and their GOD,

Till we are call'd to mount on high,
And reach their bleft abode.

5 JESUS our faithful friend shall come,
Our fouls to heav'n fhall raise,
His pow'rful arm fhall bear us home
To fing his endless praife.

O worship at Immanuel's feet,

See in his face what wonders meet!

Earth is too narrow to exprefs

His worth, his glory, or his grace.

2 The whole creation can afford

But fome faint shadows of

my Lord,

Nature, to make his beauties known,
Muft mingle colours not her own.

3 Is he compar'd to wine or bread ?

Dear Lord, our fouls would thus be fed
That flesh, that dying blood of thine,
Is bread of life, is heav'nly wine.

4 Is he a tree? The world receives
Salvation from his healing leaves :
That righteous branch, that fruitful bough,
Is David's root, and offspring too.

5 Is he a rofe? not Sharon yields, Such fragancy in all her fields: Or if the lilly he affume,

The vallies bless the rich perfume.

6 Is he a vine? His heav'nly root
Supplies the boughs with life and fruit:
O let a lafting union join

My foul to Chrift the living vine!

7 Is CHRIST a head? Each member lives,
And owns the vital pow'rs he gives :
The faints below, and faints above,
Join'd by his fpirit, and his love.

8 Is he a fountain? There I bathe,
And heal the plague of fin and death:
Thefe waters all my foul renew,
And cleanse my spotted garments too.

Is he a fire? He'll purge my drofs:
But the true gold sustains no loss:
Like a refiner he fhall fit,

And tread the refufe with his feet.

10 Is he a rock? How firm he proves:

The rock of ages never moves :

Yet the sweet streams that from him flow,
Attend us all the defart thro'.

11 Is he a way? He leads to God;

The path is drawn in lines of blood :
