There would I walk with hope and zeal,
Till I arrive at Zion's hill.

12 Is he a door? I'll enter in ;
Behold the pastures large and green!
A Paradise, divinely fair,

None but the sheep have freedom there.

[blocks in formation]

13 JESUS is made the corner-stone
For men to build their hopes upon;
I'll make him my foundation too,
Nor fear the plots of hell below.

14 Is he a temple? I adore

Th' indwelling majesty and pow'r};
And ftill to his molt holy place,
Whene'er I pray, I turn my face.

15 Is he a ftar? He breaks the night,
Piercing the shades with dawning light;
I know his glories from afar,

I know the bright, the morning ftar.

16 Is he a fun? His beams are grace ;
His courfe is joy and righteousness :
Nations rejoice when he appears,
To chafe their clouds, and dry their tears.

17 O let me climb thofe upper skies, Where storms and darknefs never rife!

There

There he difplays his pow'rs abroad,
And shines and reigns th' incarnate God.

18 Nor earth, nor feas, nor fun, nor stars, Nor heav'n his full refemblance bears: His beauties we can never trace

'Till we behold him face to face..

CCLIII. The Offices of Chrift.

OIN all the names of love and pow'r

[ocr errors]

That ever men or angels bore ;
All are too mean to speak his worth,
Qr fet Immanuel's glory forth.

2 But O what condefcending ways,
He takes to teach his heav'nly grace!
My eyes with joy and wonder fee
What forms of love he bears for me.

3 The "ANGEL of the cov'nant" ftands,
With his commission in his hands,
Sent from his Father's milder throne,
To make his great falvation known.

4 Great PROPHET, let me blefs thy name;
By thee the joyful tidings came,

Of wrath appeas'd; of fins forgiv❜ns
Of hell fubdu'd, and peace with heav'n.

5 My bright EXAMPLE, and my GUIDE,
I would be walking near thy fide;

X 2

O let me never run aftray,

Nor follow the forbidden way.

SECOND

PART.

6 Chrift is my SHEPHERD, he fhall keep,
My wand'ring foul among his fheep;
He feeds his flock, he calls their names,
His bofom bears the tender lambs.

7 My SURETY undertakes my cause,
Anfw'ring his Father's broken laws:
Behold my foul at freedom fet;
My furety paid the dreadful debt.

8 Jefus my great HIGH PRIEST hath dy'd;
I feek no facrifice befide:

His blood did once-for-all atone,
And now it pleads before the throne.

9 My ADVOCATE appears on high,
The Father lays his thunder by:
Not all that earth or hell can fay,
Shall turn my Father's heart away.

10 My LORD, my CONQU'ROR, and my KING,
Thy fceptre and thy fword I fing;
Thine is the vict❜ry and I fit
A joyful fubject at thy feet.

11 Aspire my foul to glorious deeds,

The "CAPTAIN of falvation" leads:

March

March on, nor fear to win the day,
Tho' death and hell obftruct the way.

12 Should death and hell, and pow'rs unknown, Put all their forms of mischief on,

I shall be fafe; for CHRIST difplays
Salvation in more fov'reign ways.

CCLIV. The fame.

OIN all the glorious names
Of wisdom, love, and pow'r

That ever mortals knew,
That angels ever bore :
All are too mean
To speak his worth,
Too mean to fet
My Saviour forth.

2 But O what gentle terms,
What condescending ways,
Doth our REDEEMER use
To teach his heav'nly grace!
My eyes with joy

And wonder fee,
What forms of love
He bears for me.

3 Array'd in mortal flesh,
He like an ANGEL ftands
And holds the promises,
And pardons in his hands:

Commiffion'd from
His Father's throne,
To make his grace

To mortals known.

I love my SHEPHERD's voice :
His watchful eyes fhall keep
My wand'ring foul among
The thousands of his sheep:
He feeds his flock,

He calls their names ;
His bofom bears

The tender lambs.

5 My ADVOCATE appears
For my defence on high;
The Father bows his ears,

And lays his thunder by.
Not all that hell

Or fin can fay,

Shall turn his heart,

His love away.

SECOND PART.

6 Great PROPHET of my God My tongue would bless thy name, By thee the joyful news

Of our falvation came.

The joyful news

of fins forgiv❜n

Of hell fubdu'd,

And peace with heav'n
