7 Be thou

my COUNSELLOR

My PATTERN and my GUIDE;

And thro' this defart land,

Still keep me near thy fide.

O let my feet

Ne'er run aftray,

Nor rove, nor feek

The crooked way.”

8 To this dear SURETY's hand,
Will I commit my cause ;
He answers and fulfils
His Father's broken laws.
Behold my foul
At freedom fet;
My furety paid

The dreadful debt.

9 Jefus my great HIGH PRIEST
Offer'd his blood and dy'd ;`·
My guilty conscience feeks
No facrifice befide.

His pow'rful blood

Did once atone;
And now it pleads

Before the throne,

10 My dear Almighty Lord,
My CONQ'ROR and my KING,
Thy fcepter and thy fword,
Thy reigning grace I fing.

Thine

Thine is the pow'r ;
Behold I fit,

In willing bonds
Beneath thy feet.

11 Now let my foul arise,
And tread the tempter down;
My CAPTAIN leads me forth
To conqueft and a crown.
A feeble faint

Shall win the day,

Tho' death and hell
Obftru&t the way.

12 Should all the hofts of death
And pow'rs of hell unknown,
Put their most dreadful forms
Of rage and mischief on,
I fhall be fafe ;
For CHRIST difplays
Superior pow'r ;

And guardian grace.

CCLV. The Peace of those who love and keep God's Law. Pfal. cxix. 1, 2, 3, 6, 165.

B

LEST are the undefil'd in heart,

Whole ways are right and clean;

Who never from thy law depart,
But fly from ev'ry fin.

2 Bleft

2 Bleft are the men that keep thy word,
And practise thy commands;

With their whole heart they seek the Lord,
And serve thee with their hands.

3 Great is their peace who love thy law;
How firm their fouls abide !
Nor can a bold temptation draw,
Their fteady feet afide.

4 Then fhall my heart have inward joy, And keep my face from fhame; When all thy ftatutes I obey,

And honour all thy name.

CCLVI. Spiritual Knowledge defired.

T

HY mercies fill the earth, O Lord,
How good thy works appear!

Open my eyes to read thy word,

And fee thy wonders there.

2 My heart was fashion'd by thy hand, My service is thy due;

O make thy fervant understand

3

The duties he must do.

Since I'm a ftranger here below,

Let not thy path be hid;

But mark the road my feet should go,

And be my conftant guide.

4 When I confefs'd my wand'ring ways,
Thou heard'ft my foul complain;
Grant me the teachings of thy grace,
Or I shall stray again.

6 This was my comfort when I bore
Variety of grief;

It made me learn thy word the more,
And fly to that relief.

the Saint's Portion.

ORD I have made thy word my choice,
My lafting heritage ;

There fhall my noblest pow'rs rejoice,
My warmest thoughts engage...

2 I'll read the hift'ries of thy love,
And keep thy laws in fight,
While thro' the promises I rove,
With ever fresh delight.

3 'Tis a broad land of wealth unknown,
Where springs of life arife;

Seeds of immortal blifs are sown,
And hidden glory lies.

4. The beft relief that mourners have;
It makes our forrows bleft:
Our faireft hope beyond the grave,
And our eternal reft.

CCLVIII. Sanctified Afflictions.
Pf. cxix. 67.

F

ATHER, I blefs thy gentle hand;
How kind was thy chaftifing rod,
That brought my confcience to a ftand,
And brought my wand'ring foul to God!

2 Foolish and vain, I went aftray,
E'er I had felt thy feourges, Lord;
I left my guide, and lost my way;
But now I love and keep thy word.

3 'Tis good for me to wear the yoke,
For pride is apt to rise and swell;
'Tis good to bear my father's ftroké,
That I might learn his ftatutes well.

The law that iffues from thy mouth,
Shall raife my chearful paflions more
Than all the treasures of the South,
Or Western hills of golden ore.

5 Thy hands have made my mortal frame,
Thy Spirit form'd my foul within ;
Teach me to know thy wondrous name,
And guard me fafe from death and fin.
