New life from Chrift, we now poffefs,
And walk the heav'nly road.

6 To thee, O Jefus, may we live,

Devoted to thy fear!

Thee will we love, thee will we praise,
And all thy laws revere.

HYMNS for the LORD'S SUPPER.

CCLXXXIV. The Lord's Sup per inftituted. I Cor. xi. 23.

&c.

"T

WAS on that dark, that doleful night,
When pow'rs of earth and hell arofe

Against the Son of God's delight,

And friends betray'd him to his foes.

2 Before the mournful scene began,

3

He took the bread, and blefs'd, and brake:-
What love thro' all his actions ran!

What wondrous words of grace he spake!

"This is my body broke for fin

"Receive and eat the living food;"

Then took the cup, and blefs'd the wine;
་་ "Tis the new cov'nant in my blood."

[blocks in formation]

[4 For us his flesh with nails was torn ;
He bore the scourge, he felt the thorn:
And justice pour'd upon his head,
It's heavy vengeance in our ftead.

5

For us his vital blood was fpilt,

To fet us free from all our guilt:

When for black crimes of largest fize,
He gave his foul a facrifice.]

6" Do this, (he cry'd) 'till time shall end,
"In mem❜ry of your dying friend;
"Meet at my table, and record
"The love of your departed Lord.”

[7 Jefus, thy feaft we celebrate

We fhew thy death, we fing thy name,
Till thou return, and we fhall eat

The marriage fupper of the Lamb.]

Amazing

Amazing favour, matchlefs grace,
Of our defcending God!]

3 This holy bread and wine,
Maintains our fainting breath,
By union with our living Lord,
And int'reft in his death.

4 Our heav'nly Father calls
Chrift and his members one;
We the young children of his love,
And he the firft-born Son.

[blocks in formation]

6. Let all our pow'rs be join'd,
His glorious name to raise;
Pleasure and love fill ev'ry mind,
And ev'ry breath be praise.

CCLXXXVI. The New Teftament in the Blood of CHRIST.

HE promife of my Father's love
"Shall ftand for ever good?
He faid, and gave his foul to death,
And feal'd the grace with blood.

2 To this dear cov'nant of thy word,,
I fet my worthless name;

Confirm th' engagement to my Lord,
And make my humble claim.

3 The light, and ftrength, and pard'ning grace,

And glory fhall be mine;

My foul, and life, and heart, and flesh,
And all my pow'rs are thine.

CCLXXXVII. Redeeming Grace.

'L

ET all our tongues be one,
To praise our GOD on high;

Who from his bofom fent his Son
To fetch us ftrangers nigh.

2 Nor let our voices cease

To fing the SAVIOUR's name;
Jefus, th' ambaffador of peace, pro la 1.00
How chearfully he came !

3 It coft him cries and tears,
To bring us near to God;

To make the payment good.

ATURE with open volume ftands,
To fpread her Maker's praise abroad;
And ev'ry labour of his hands,
Shews fomething worthy of a God.

2 But in the grace that refcu'd man,
His brightest form of glory fhines;
Here, on the cross, 'tis faireft drawn,
In precious blood, and crimson lines.

(3 Here his whole name appears complete;
Nor wit can guefs, nor reason prove,
Which of the letters beft is writ,

4

The pow'r, the wisdom, or the love.)

Here I behold his inmoft heart,

Where grace and vengeance ftrangely join,
Piercing his Son with sharpest smart,

To make eternal pleasures mine.

5 O! the fweet wonders of that cross,
Where God the Saviour lov'd and dy'd !
Her nobleft life my fpirit draws
From his dear wounds, and bleeding fide.

I would for ever speak his name,
In founds to mortal ears unknown;
