2 Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns: Let men their songs employ, [plains, While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and Repeat the sounding joy.

8 No more let sins and sorrows grow,

Nor thorns infest the ground:
He comes to make his blessings flow
As far as sin is found.

4 He rules the world with truth and
And makes the nations prove

The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.

It shines through sin and sorrow's night, To guide us to our Lord.

3 Oh haste to follow where it leads! The gracious call obey,

Be rugged wilds or flowery meads
The Christian's destined way.

4 Oh gladly tread the narrow path,

While light and grace are given: Who meekly follow Christ on earth Shall reign with him in heaven.

The Guiding Star. SPIRIT OF THE PSALMS.

1 BRIGHT was the guiding star that led,
With mild, benignant ray,
The Gentiles to the lowly shed
Where the Redeemer lay.

Invitations of the Gospel. WATTS

1 LET every mortal ear attend,
And every heart rejoice:
The trumpet of the gospel sounds
With an inviting voice.

2 Ho! all ye hungry, starving souls,
Who feed upon the wind,
And vainly strive, with earthly toys.
To fill an empty mind, —

WATCHMAN, TELL US OF THE NIGHT. 78. DOUBLE. L. MASON.

[merged small][graphic][subsumed][merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small]

1 WATCHMAN, tell us of the night,
What its signs of promise are;
Traveller, o'er yon mountain's height,
See that glory-beaming star!
Watchman, does its beauteous ray
Aught of hope or joy foretell?
Traveller, yes; it brings the day, -
Promised day of Israel.

2 Watchman, tell us of the night:
Higher yet that star ascends.
Traveller, blessedness and light,
Peace and truth, its course portends.
Watchman, will its beams alone
Gild the spot that gave them birth?
Traveller, ages are its own:
See! it bursts o'er all the earth.

3 Watchman, tell us of the night;
For the morning seems to dawn.
Traveller, darkness takes its flight,
Doubt and terror are withdrawn.
Watchman, let thy wanderings cease:
Hie thee to thy quiet home.
Traveller, lo! the Prince of Peace,
Lo the Son of God, is come.

Gentiles coming into the Church.

1 RISE, crowned with light, imperial Salem, rise;
Exalt thy towering head, and lift thine eyes;
See heaven its sparkling portals wide display,
And break upon thee in a flood of day!

2 See a long race thy spacious courts adorn!
See future sons and daughters, yet unborn,
In crowding ranks on every side arise,
Demanding life, impatient for the skies.

3 See barbarous nations at thy gates attend,
Walk in thy light, and in thy temple bend!
See thy bright altars thronged with prostrate kings,
While every land its joyous tribute brings!

4 The seas shall waste, the skies to smoke decay,
Rocks fall to dust, and mountains melt away:
But fixed his word; his saving power remains;
Thy realm shall last, thy own Messiah reigns.

Progress of the Gospel.

1 POUR, blessed gospel, glorious news for man:
Thy stream of life o'er springless deserts roll;
Thy bond of peace the mighty earth can span,
And make one brotherhood from pole to pole.
