105.

106.

Christian Farewell.

DODDRIDGE

1 THY presence, ever-living God,

Wide through all nature spreads abroad;
Thy watchful eyes, which never sleep,
In every place thy children keep.

2 To thee we now commit our ways,
And still implore thy heavenly grace;
Still cause thy face on us to shine,
And guard and guide us still as thine.

Vesper Hymn.

ANON. 1 LORD of eternal purity,

[ocr errors]

Our Guide and Stay.
1 FOR mercies past we praise thee, Lord,
The fruits of earth, the hopes of heaven,
Thy helping arm, thy guiding word,
And answered prayers, and sins forgiven.

2 Whene'er we tread on danger's height,
Or walk temptation's slippery way,
Be still, to lead our steps aright,
Thy word our guide, thine arm our stay.

8 Be ours thy blessed presence still;

United hearts, unchanging love:
No thought that contradicts thy will;
No wish that centres not above.

1 PART in peace; with deep thanksgiving, 2 Let thy voice, with sweet commanding

Rendering, as we homeward tread,

Gracious service to the living,

Tranquil memory to the dead.

Bid our griefs and struggles end; Peace which passeth understanding On our waiting spirits send.

HASTINGS. 2 Oh may all enjoy the blessing
Which thy word's designed to give!
Let us all, thy love possessing,
Joyfully the truth receive.

1 GENTLY, Lord, oh! gently lead us
Through this lonely vale of tears,
Through the changes thou'st decreed us,
Till our last great, change appears.

2 When temptation's darts assail us,
When in devious paths we stray,
Let thy goodness never fail us;
Lead us in thy perfect way.

3 In the hour of pain and anguish,
In the hour when death draws near,
Suffer not our hearts to languish,
Suffer not our souls to fear.

4 And, when mortal life is ended,
May we wake among the blest;
And, by all the saints attended,
Ever on thy bosom rest!

1 MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour, And the Father's boundless love, With the Holy Spirit's favor,

Rest upon us from above!

2 Thus may we abide in union
With each other and the Lord,
And possess, in sweet communion,
Joys which earth cannot afford'

WATTS. 120.

[blocks in formation]

God our Constant Benefactor. STEKLE 1 My Maker and my King,

To thee my all I owe :
Thy sovereign bounty is the spring
Whence all my blessings flow.

2 Thou ever good and kind,
A thousand reasons move,
A thousand obligations bind,
My heart to grateful love.

3 The creature of thy hand,
On thee alone I live:

My God! thy benefits demand
More praise than tongue can give.

4 Oh let thy grace inspire

My soul with strength divine; Let all my powers to thee aspire, And all my days be thine!

4 Then let our songs abound,

And every tear be dry:

WATTS. 2 Assisted by his grace,

We still pursue our way;
And hope at last to reach the prize.
Secure in endless day.

3 "Tis he that works to will;

'Tis he that works to do: His is the power by which we act; His be the glory too.

The Fountain of Living Waters.—Jer. II. 13.

1 THE fountain in its source
No drought of summer fears;
The farther it pursues its course,
The nobler it appears.

We're marching thro' Immanuel's ground, 2 But shallow cisterns yield

To fairer worlds on high.

[blocks in formation]

A scanty, short supply:

GUYON

The morning sees them amply filled; At evening they are dry.

3 The cisterns I forsake,

O Fount of Life! for thee; My thirst with living waters slake, And drink eternity.
