2 See how we grovel here below,
Fond of these earthly toys!
Our souls how heavily they go
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our lifeless songs,
In vain we strive to rise;
Hosannahs languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 O Saviour! shall we ever live
At this poor dying rate?
Our love so faint, so cold to Thee,
And thine to us so great.

5 Come holy Spirit! heavenly Dove!
With all thy quickening powers;
Come shed abroad a Saviour's love
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN 32. P. M.

For Whitsunday.

1 COME Holy Spirit, from above! Impart thy gifts of grace and love; Come visit with celestial fire, And with thyself our souls inspire, That we may relish things divine, And to the word of God incline. 2 Spirit of comfort! our defence, Thy heavenly light to us dispense; From sin and sorrow set us free, And make thy temples worthy Thee! Though weak we are, alas! and frail Let not the world or flesh prevail.

3 Chase from our souls their mortal foe
And peace, the fruit of love, destow;
And lest our feet should run astray,
Direct and guide us in the way;
Make us eternal truths receive,
And practice all that we believe.

HYMN 33. C. M.

Christ adored by all creation.

1 COME let us join our cheerful songs
With angels round the throne;
Ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
But all their joys are one.

2 "Worthy the Lamb that died," they cry, "To be exalted thus,'

[ocr errors]

"Worthy the Lamb," our lips reply,
"For he was slain for us.'

3 Jesus is worthy to receive

Honour and power divine;
And blessings, more than we can give,
Be, Lord! for ever thine.

4 Let all that dwell above the sky
Through air, and earth, and seas,
Conspire to lift thy glories high,
And speak thine endless praise.
5 The whole creation join in one,
To bless the sacred name

Of him that sits upon the throne,
And to adore the Lamb.

HYMN 34. P. M.

The consolation of Israel.

1 COME, Thou long-expected Jesus!
Born to set thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.

2 Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art!
Blest desire of every nation,
Joy of every faithful heart.

3 Born thy people to deliver,
Born a child, and yet a King,
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.

4 By thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

HYMN 35. P. M.

For the preaching of the Gospel.

1 COME, thou soul-transforming Spirit!
Bless the sower and the seed,
Let each heart thy grace inherit,
Raise the weak, the hungry feed;
From the gospel

Now supply thy people's need.

L

2 O may all enjoy the blessing
Which thy word's designed to give ;
Let us all, thy love possessing,
Joyfully the truth receive;
And for ever,

To thy praise and glory live!
3 Thanks we give, and adoration,
For thy gospel's joyful sound;
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound!
May thy presence

With us evermore be found!

4 So, whene'er the signal's given,
Us from earth to call away,
Borne on angel's wings to heaven,
Glad the summons to obey,
May we ever

Reign with Christ in endless day!

HYMN 36. c. M.

"God is love."

1 COME, ye that know and fear the Lord,
And raise your thoughts above:
Let every heart and voice accord,
To sing that "God is love."

2 This precious truth his word declares,
And all his mercies prove;
Jesus, the gift of gifts appears,

To shew that "God is love.'

[ocr errors]

3 Behold his patience bearing long
With those who from him rove;
"Till mighty grace their hearts subdues
To teach them-" God is love."

4 The work begun is carried on

By power from heaven above; And every step from first to last, Declares that " God is love."

5 O may we all, while here below, This best of blessings prove; "Till warmer hearts, in brighter worlds, Proclaim that "God is love."

HYMN 37. L. M.

Weary sinners invited to rest.

1 COME, weary souls with sin opprest,
The Saviour offers heavenly rest;
The kind and gracious call obey,
And cast your gloomy fears away.
2 Burthen'd with guilt, a painful load,
O come and bow before your God;
Divine compassion, mighty love,
Will all the painful load remove.
3 Here mercy's boundless ocean flows,
To cleanse your guilt, and heal your woes;
Pardon, and life, and endless peace:
How rich the gift! how free the grace!
4 Lord! we accept with thankful heart,
The hopes thy gracious words impart :
We come with trembling, yet rejoice,
And bless the kind inviting voice.
