LAW, MOSAIC, CHARACTER OF. TEMPORARY. RELATION OF THE LAW AND GOSPEL. Deu. 4.8. What nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Deu. 33.2. From his right hand went a fiery law for them.

Neh. 9.13. Gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments. Psa. 76.1. In Judah is God known; his name is great in Israel.

Psa. 78.5. He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children. 7. That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments. Jer. 3.16. In those days, saith the Lord, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the Lord: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it.

Eze. 20.11. I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them. v. 25.

Dan. 9.27. He shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease. v. 24-27.

Hos. 8.12. I have written to him the great things of my law.

Mat. 5.17. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. v. 18.

Mat. 19.8. Moses because of the hardness your hearts suffered you to put away your wives.

of

Luk. 10.24. Many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Luk. 16.16. The law and the prophets were

until John.

Jno. 1.17. The law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Jno. 4.21. The hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

Jno. 8.35. The servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. Act. 3.25. The covenant which God made with our fathers.

Act. 10.28. Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. v. 9-28. Act. 13.39. By him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Act. 15.10. Why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear?

Act. 24.14. After the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets.

Rom. 3.1. What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? 2. Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.

Rom. 7.10. The commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 16. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

Rom. 8.3. What the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin condemned sin in the flesh.

Rom. 9.4. To whom pertaineth the adoption. 2 Cor. 3.7. If the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away: 8. How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? 9. For of the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. 10. For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth. 11. For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.

2 Cor. 3.12. Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: 13. And not as Moses, which put a vail over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: 14. But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Gal. 2.14. If thou, being a Jew, livest after Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?

Gal. 3.19. Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made. 21. Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 23. Before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24. Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Gal. 4.3. We, when we were children, were

273

in bondage under the elements of the world: | 4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5. To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. 9. Now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage? 10. Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years. v. 1-12, 21-31.

Eph. 2.15. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances.

Col. 2.14. Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross. 16. Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy-day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17. Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ. 20. If ye be dead with Christ from the rudiinents of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, 21. Touch not; taste not; handle not; 22. Which all are to perish with the using.

Heb. 7.18. There is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. 19. The law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. v. 1-28.

Heb. 8.4. There are priests that offer gifts according to the law: 5. Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was

about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. 6. He is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. 7. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. 8. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant. 13. In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away. v. 9-12.

Heb. 9.8. The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: 9. Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10. Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. 23. It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.

Heb. 10 1. The law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. 2. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. 3. But in those sacrifices there is a remem

brance again made of sins every year. 4. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. v. 1-18.

Heb. 11.40. God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

Heb. 12.18. Ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, 19. And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words. 27. This word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
