A

SELECTION

OF

HYMNS.

"HYMN 1. C. M. 1 COME, holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove, With all thy quick'ning powers, Kindle a flame of sacred love In these cold hearts of ours.

2 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise,

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

3 Dear Lord! and shall we ever live
At this poor dying rate,
Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great?

4 Come, holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning powers,
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

[blocks in formation]

4 Ye mortals, catch the sound,
Redeem'd by him from hell;
And send the echo round
The globe on which you dwell;
Transported cry,
"Jesus who bled
Hath left the dead
No more to die."

5 All hail triumphant Lord,
Who sav'st us with thy blood!
Wide be thy name ador'd,
Thou rising, reigning God!
With thee we rise,
With thee we reign,

And empires gain
Beyond the skies.

HYMN 5. C. M.

1 ALAS! and did my Saviour bleed! And did my Sovereign die ? Would he devote that sacred head For such a worm as I ?

2 Was it for crimes that I had done, He groan'd upon the tree? Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!
