it became us to do; we have not set thee continually before us in all our ways.

In too many instances we have sought our happiness in carnal gratifications, or earthly vanities; and have loved and served the creature more than the Creator.

For thy name's sake, O Lord, pardon our iniquity; for it has been great indeed. Forgive us all our sins past, through the atoning blood of thy dear Son; and grant us the assistance of thy Holy Spirit, that henceforth we may give ourselves up to thy service, and walk before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days.

O let us not seek our rest in this transitory world; but may we desire a better country, that is, an heaven

ly; and be followers of them, who through faith and patience inherit the promises. May we seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God; and while we are in the world, may we be kept from the evil to which we are exposed in it, and live as those whose conversation is in hea

ven.

We pray to thee in behalf of all our fellow-christians, in every part of the world. Vouchsafe to them the consolations of thy special presence; build them up in the faith and hope of the Gospel; give them victory over all their enemies; and bring them at length to thy everlasting glory, with exceeding joy.

Visit, we beseech thee, the dark and benighted regions of the earth with

the clear light of the truth as it is in Jesus; and may multitudes be made wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Him.

Extend thy compassion, we pray thee, to all the sons and daughters of affliction: be thou a father of the fatherless defend thou the cause of the widows; and comfort those who have none upon earth to support and help them.

Have mercy upon all men; reward our benefactors and well-wishers; forgive our enemies, and turn their hearts.

And now, Lord, take us under thy merciful care and protection. May we rest in safety, this night, under thy sheltering wing; and if we are spared to the returning day, may we rise with recruited strength, and

apply ourselves with renewed vigour to the duties which lie before us.

Hear us, most merciful Father, and accept us, for the sake of thy beloved Son, our only Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

MORNING PRAYER IV.

O THOU Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning; as the sun in the firmament cheers and enlivens the face of nature, so dost thou gladden the hearts of thy people, and exhilarate the souls of those who look up to thee for thy blessing.

Thou art the same yesterday, and

to-day, and for ever. Thy property is always to have mercy; therefore are we encouraged to seek thee at the throne of grace, and to make known our requests unto thee, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving.

Regard us, we beseech thee, for Jesus Christ's sake, with thy lovingkindness and mercy. Remember us, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people. O visit us with thy salvation.

Our sins and provocations against thee have indeed been many and grievous; and we desire to abase ourselves before thee, on account of them, in the deepest penitence and humiliation of soul.

But, O most gracious God, who declarest thy almighty power, most chiefly in shewing mercy and pity;
