Make us jealous and watchful over our own hearts. Teach us to walk in all godliness, and with all circumspection, knowing that the enemies of the Gospel watch for our halting.

Preserve us by thy grace from idleness, either in our temporal or spiritual concerns. May we never be slothful in business, but fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.

Preserve us from covetousness and a worldly mind; incline our hearts to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, trusting to thy word, that all other things shall be added unto us.

Preserve us from a proud look and haughty carriage. Thou knowest, Lord, that we have nothing wherein we ought to pride ourselves, but much whereof we ought to be ashamed.

Make us humble, courteous, and kind, in lowliness of mind esteeming others better than ourselves.

Preserve us from peevishness and fretfulness of spirit, from violent passion and anger, from secret sullenness and resentment, and from every other unbecoming and unchristian temper.

Grant that we may be truly renewed in the spirit of our minds, that we may put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Grant that the fruits of thy Spirit may appear and abound in us. Give us an increase of love, joy, and peace in believing. Strengthen our faith, and may our hope be as an anchor of the soul, sure and steadfast.

Grant that our outward walk and

conduct may prove that we are true

disciples of the Lord Jesus. Teach us to shew all long-suffering, gentleness, and goodness. Make us upright in our dealings with all men; sober and temperate in our enjoyments; kind and tender-hearted towards our fellow-creatures; forgiving, as we hope, for Christ's sake, to be forgiven of thee.

Let our prayers come up before thee in behalf of thy church and people. May they ever find thee a very present help in time of trouble.

Strengthen those that do stand; comfort and help the weak-hearted; raise up them that fall; and finally beat down Satan under our feet.

Look down in mercy upon such as languish on beds of sickness, or are in any other kind of affliction and distress. Sanctify their trials, and

give them reason, in the issue, to bless thee for them.

Hear us, Father of mercies ;-pardon our unworthiness, and send us an answer of peace, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Lord and Saviour. Our Father, &c.

The Grace of our Lord, &c.

EVENING PRAYER II.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who art always more ready to hear than we to pray, and art wont to give more than either we desire or deserve; help us to draw near to thee at this time, with humility and thankfulness; for truly we have much cause to be humbled, and much to be thankful.

Thou art ever mindful of us, though we are too forgetful of thee; thou art

inviting us by daily mercies to gratitude and love: but alas! our deceitful hearts are continually apt to start aside like a broken bow: we are ever ready to revolt and go backward. Lord, have mercy upon us! Turn thou us, and we shall be turned; draw us, and we will run after thee.

Blessed be thy name, that there is forgiveness with thee in Christ Jesus; for his sake extend thy mercy and pardon to us; heal our backslidings; receive us graciously; and love us freely.

Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew right spirits within us. Make us more humble, more thankful, more holy.

Turn our feet to the way of thy testimonies. Give us an increasing love of thy holy word. Dispose and
