Though joys be wither'd all and dead, 6 Fix'd on this ground will I remain, THE CHRISTIAN'S WARFARE. 400 Pelham-p. 128.] S. M. FIRST PART. SOLDIERS of Christ, arise, And put your armour on, Strong in the strength which God supplies Through his eternal Son; Strong in the Lord of hosts, And in his mighty power, Who in the strength of Jesus trusts Is more than conqueror. 2 Stand then in his great might, That having all things done, And all your conflicts past, Ye may o'ercome through Christ alone, And stand entire at last. 3 Stand, then, against your foes, In close and firm array; SECOND PART. Legions of wily fiends oppose Throughout the evil day : But mock their vain design, Of righteousness divine. No weakness of the soul; And fortify the whole : To battle all proceed ; That was in Christ your Head. BUT, above all, lay hold On faith's victorious shield ; Be sure to win the field : Satan shall be subdued ; And quench'd with Jesus' blood. What can his love withstand ? Shall pluck you from his hand ? All power to him is given : sin's remains, Attend with constant care ; And watching unto prayer. THIRD PART, Ready for all alarms Steadfastly set your face, And always exercise your arms, And use your every grace. 4 Pray, without ceasing, pray, (Your Captain gives the word,) His summons cheerfully obey, And call upon the Lord : In instant prayer display: Pray, without ceasing pray. To God with faith draw near : Approach his courts, besiege his throne, With all the power of prayer; Nor from his altar move; And every heart his love. 2 To God your spirits dart ; Your souls in words declare ; Th’ unutterable prayer ; And now show forth his praise, In shouts, or silent awe, adore His miracles of grace. 3 Pour out your souls to God, And bow them with your knees; And spread your hearts and hands abroad, And pray for Sion's peace. Your guides and brethren bear, For ever on your mind; Extend the arms of mighty prayer, In grasping all mankind. 4 From strength to strength go on, Wrestle, and fight, and pray: Tread all the powers of darkness down, And win the well-fought day ; Still let the Spirit cry, In all his soldiers, “ Come,” Till Christ the Lord descend from high, And take the conquerors home. 401 Watchman-p. 118.] S. M. FIRST PART. H ! Attend the trumpet's sound; Stand to your arms, the foe is nigh; The powers of hell surround; Who bow to Christ's command, Your arms and hearts prepare ; The day of battle is at hand! Go forth to glorious war! 2 See, on the mountain top, The standard of your God! In Jesus' name I lift it up, All stain'd in hallow'd blood. To all the nations call : He bore the cross for all. Your Captain's footsteps see; To certain victory. He ever reigns the same : Salvation, happiness, and heaven, Are all in Jesus' name. 4 Only have faith in God: In faith your foes assail : But all the powers of hell : By flaming vengeance hurld, And rule this lower world. SECOND PART. ANGELS your march oppose, Who still in strength excel, Your secret, sworn, eternal foes, Countless, invisible; With rage that never ends, Their hellish arts they try : Legions of dire, malicious fiends, And spirits enthroned on high. 2 On earth th' usurpers reign, Exert their baneful power ; O'er the poor fallen sons of men They tyrannize their hour : But shall believers fly? And all their powers defy ? 3 Jesus' tremendous name Puts all our foes to flight! A lion is in fight. We all hell's host o'erthrow; We on to conquer go. |
