17 And there was not a man left in Ai, or Beth-el, that went not out after Ifrael: and they left the cityopen, and pursued after Ifrael.

18 And the LORD saidunto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thine hand, toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that be bad in his hand, toward the city.

32 And he wrote thereupon the stones a copy of the law of Mofes, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Ifrael.

CHAP, IX. The kingscombine against Ifrael. 3 The Gibeonites by craft obtain a league: 16 are condemned to perpetual bondage. 21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live (but let them be hewers of wood. and drawers of water, unto all the congregation) as y princeshad promised them. 22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you? when ye dwell among us.

23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bond-men, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 And they answered Joshua, and faid, Because it was certainly told thy fervants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his fervant Mofes to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were fore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 And now behold, we are in thine hand, as it leemeth good and right unto thee, to do unto us, do.

26 And so didhe unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Ifrael, that they flew them not.

27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

CHAP. Χ.
