tion of the Jewish nation, and the falvation of the Gentile world; fhall all be fulfilled. My reward is with me, and all my work before me: nor will I bow my head in death, till all be finished. I am not come to destroy the prophets, but to fulfil

For verily I fay unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle, fhall in no wife pass from the Law till all be fulfilled. I plight my veracity, I speak in verity. Amen, fo it fhall be. Verily I fay unto you, till heaven and earth pass

The elementary and starry heavens fhall ftand to the world's end. Then the elements fhall melt with fervent heat, and the ftars fhall fall from their fockets, as the untimely fruit of the fig-tree; the fun fhall be confounded, and the moon afhamed; the heavens and the earth fhall flee away, and new heavens and a new earth fhall appear, when I arife to Shine before my ancients gloriously.

Till then, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Law, till all be fulfilled. The Law fhall ftand as it does in all it's fenfe, and in all it's meaning, without being evangelized, or without ceafing to exist as a covenant of works; without being bereft of it's irritating power, or fhorn of it's penal fanction; without mitigation, and without repeal. It fhall ftand as my children's fchoolmafter, and first husband; as the mafter's commanding will, and the bond-fervant's only rule; as the creditor's handwriting, and the debtor's dreadful account-book;

as

as a teftimony for God in defence of his holiness, and against the wicked for every tranfgreffion. So fhall it stand

Till all be fulfilled. The Law is fulfilled in a fourfold fenfe.

ift, Perfectly, in both precept and penalty, by

the Saviour.

2dly, In the Church, efficaciously, by the Spirit. 3dly, Imperfectly, in the exercise of grace, by the faint.

4thly, In the execution of the curfe, which is the damnation of the wicked.

First, The Law is perfectly fulfilled, both in precept and penalty, by the Saviour, who affumed man's nature, and took man's name, to act in man's ftead. He was made of a woman, and made under the Law. He became furety for man's debts; and, by his kind undertaking and circumcifion, became a debtor, in the debtor's place, to restore that [honour to the Law] which he took not away. "He was made "fin for us, who knew no fin, that we might be made "the righteousness of God in him." Of him a perfect obedience to the precept was exacted, and he made reftitution; the debt of fuffering was demanded, and he was preffed to pay. When he had given a perfect obedience to the precept, he fays, "I have finished [this part of] the work which thou gavest 66 me to do." And, at clofing his obedience unto death, he bowed his head, and faid, "It is finifhed."

Thus

Thus he "magnified the Law, and made it honour, "able;" so that one jot, or one tittle, did in no wife pafs from the Law till all was fulfilled. It is easier for heaven and earth to pafs, than for God's righteous Servant to fail of performing the will of his God. "I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy Law "is within my heart." So he undertook, and fo it became him to fulfil all righteousness, Matt. iii. 15. And fo it behoved Chrift to fuffer; for he came not to destroy the Law, but to fulfil.

Secondly, The Law is fulfilled efficaciously in the Church of God, by the Spirit: as it is written, That the righteoufnefs of the Law might be FULFILLED IN US, who walk, not after the flesh, but after the Spirit, Rom. viii. 4. Now the righteousness of the Law is fulfilled in the Church.

1, By the imputation of Chrift's righteousness for our juftification. Rom. v. 19.

2dly, By the indwelling of the Holy Ghoft, which is our fanctification. Rom. xv. 16.

3dly, By God's circumcifing our hearts, to love him with all our heart, and with all our foul, that we may live, (Deut. xxx. 6.) Love to God being the first and great commandment of the Law.

4thly, By the indwelling of God's good word, and by the good treasure of his grace.

First, What is the Law? It is a just Law, and is the rule of righteoujnefs. "This," fays Mofes, "fhall

" be

"be our righteousness, if we obferve to do all these "commandments, before the Lord our God, as he "hath commanded us," Deut. vi. 25. Christ's obedience to the Law, imputed to us, answers this: By the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. This is juftification from all things; and makes the believer a just man, as the Law is just.

Secondly, The Law is holy: and the foul of the faint is the feat, and his body the temple, of the Holy Ghoft, which dwelleth in us, and makes the believer boly, as the Law is holy.

Thirdly, The Law requires love to God above all things elfe; and the faint of God is bleffed with the love of God, Father, Son, and Spirit, shed abroad in his heart; and has fellowship with the Father, Son, and Spirit. He dwells in God, who is love; and God dwells in him. He is joined to the Lord, and is one spirit with him. This answers the requirement of the great command.

Fourthly, The Law is fpiritual, and the Law is good. The faint of God is a fpiritual man, and a good man. He is a partaker of God's good Spirit; the good treasure of grace is in him; the good word of God is in him; the good work of regeneration has paffed on his foul; and the whole perfecting work of grace is carried on, and will be compleated in him; which makes him a good man, as the Law is good,

Laftly,

Lastly, The Law promifes life, but eternal life it could never give. The believer, therefore, has got what the Law could not give: "He that believeth "hath everlasting life, and fhall never come into " condemnation." If this is Antinomianifm, it is precious Antinomianifin! This is the man in whom the righteousness of the Law is fulfilled; who is redeemed from the Law, and brought to the Gofpel; redeemed from the curfe, and crowned with the bleffing; no more under the Law, but under Grace; not under wrath, but under love; no more under the schoolmaster to Mofes, but under the Law of the Spirit, to Chrift; no more a bond-fervant, but a freeborn fon; no more a stranger, but knows God, and is known of him; no more a child of the bondwoman, but of the free; no longer a foreigner, but a fellow-citizen with the faints, and of the houfhold of God. Verily I fay unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the Law till all be [thus] fulfilled in the elect of God. They fhall all be juftified, they fhall all be fanctified, they fhall all be made meet for the inheritance with the faints in light. Thefe are the genuine offspring of Abraham, which Sarah bears unto Abraham. These do the works of Abrahani, namely, the works of faith, labours of love, and patience of hope. Thefe look to Abraham their father, and to Sarab that bare them; and keep their Father's commandment, and forfake not the law of their Mother. They
