[blocks in formation]

1 FAR from our thoughts, vain world, begone, Let our religious hours alone;

Fain would our eyes our Savior see;
We wait a visit, Lord, from thee.

2 Our hearts grow warm with holy fire,
And kindle with a pure desire :

To see thy grace, to taste thy love,
And feel thine influence from above.
3 Blest Jesus, what delicious fare!
How sweet thine entertainments are!
Never did angels taste, above,
Redeeming grace and dying love,
4 Hail! great Immanuel, all divine!
In thee thy Father's glories shine;
Thy glorious name shall be adored,
And every tongue confess thee Lord.

145. S. M.

1 YE nations, praise the Lord;
Ye lands your voices raise;
Let heaven and earth, with loud accord,
Our God for ever praise.

2 His truth and mercy stand,

Past, present, and to be,

Long as the years of his right hand—

Long as eternity.

3 Praise his enduring love;

Praise him all things beneath;
Praise him, ye heavenly hosts above;
O praise him all that breathe.

1 LET all the earth their voices raise,
To sing a psalm of lofty praise,
To sing and bless Jehovah's name :
His glory let all people know,
His wonders to all people show,

And all his saving works proclaim.

2 He fram'd the world, and form'd the sky, With all the shining orbs on high,

And reigns in might and glory there:
His beams are beams of life and light;
His beauties how divinely bright!
His temples how divinely fair!

3 O haste the hour, the glorious hour,
When earth shall feel his saving power,
And all the nations love his name:
Theu shall the reign of terror cease,
And faith shall bring rejoicing peace,
And all the grace of God proclaim.

1 To your Creator, God,

Your great Preserver, raise,
Ye creatures of his hand,

Your highest notes of praise:
Let every voice proclaim his power,
His name adore, and loud rejoice.

2 Let every creature join

To celebrate his name,
And all their varied powers,
His might and skill proclaim.

Let nature raise from every tongue,
A thrilling song of grateful praise.
3 But O, from human tongues
Should nobler praises flow,
And every thankful heart

With warm devotion glow : Your voices raise, ye highly blest,— Above the rest declare his praise.

148. 8s & 7s.

1 EVERY perfect gift and blessing
Comes descending from above-
From the Father's grace unceasing-
From the blessed Fount of Love.
2 All things here are in commotion,
Changing as the wind that blows;
Restless as the troubled ocean:
He no variation knows.

3 Through all time's successive measure,
Still Jehovah is the same;
Still performing all his pleasure;
Blessed be his glorious name!

4 Pow'r with love forever blended,
All creation still sustains;
Let all anxious care be ended,
Love with power forever reigns.

5 Praise for every perfect blessing
Comes descending from above;
Praise the Father without ceasing-
Praise the blessed Fount of Love.

149. L. M.

1 PRAISE, everlasting praise be paid
To him who earth's foundations laid;
Praise to the God whose mighty will
Creation's wide domains fulfil.

2 Praise to the goodness of the Lord,
Who rules his people by his word;
And there reveals a plan of grace
Encircling all the human race.
3 0 for a strong, a lasting faith,
To credit what our Father saith!
To glory in his gracious will,
And all his holy laws fulfil!

4 Then, should the earth's foundations shake,
And all the wheels of nature break,-
Our steadfast souls should fear no more
Than solid rocks when billows roar!

1 LET every tongue thy goodness speak, Thou sovereign Lord of all;

Thy strength'ning hands uphold the weak, And raise the poor that fall.

2 When sorrows bow the spirit down,
When virtue lies distress'd

Beneath the proud oppressor's frown,
Thou giv'st the mourner rest.

3 Thou know'st the pains thy servants feel, Thou hear'st thy children's cry,

And, their best wishes to fulfil,
Thy grace is ever nigh.

4 Thy mercy never shall remove From men of heart sincere;

Thou sav'st the souls whose humble love
Is joined with holy fear.

5 Our lips shall dwell upon thy praise,
And spread thy fame abroad:

Let all the sons of Adam raise
The honors of their God.

151. 7s.

1 SONGS of praise the angels sang,
Heaven with hallelujaḥs rang,
When Jehovah's work begun,
When he spake, and it was done.

2 Songs of praise awoke the morn,
When the Prince of Peace was born:
Joy attuned angelic breath,
When he triumphed over death.

3 Heaven and earth may pass away,

Songs of praise shall crown that day;
God will make new heavens and earth,
Songs of praise shall hail their birth.

4 We below, with heart and voice,
Still in songs of praise rejoice;
Learning here, by faith and love,
Songs of praise to sing above.

5 Borne upon our latest breath,
Songs of praise shall conquer death;

Then, amidst eternal joy,

Praise shall all our powers employ.
