586. L. M.

1 How pleasing is the scene, how sweet,
When kindred souls in friendship join,
Whose joys and cares united meet
In bands of amity divine!

2 Less fragrant was the ointment poured
On Aaron's consecrated head,

When balmy sweets, profusely showered, Down to the sacred vesture spread. 3 Not flowery Hermon e'er displayed, Impearled with dew, a fairer sight; Nor Zion's beauteous hills, arrayed In golden beams of morning light. 4 'Tis here the Lord, indulgent, sheds His kindest gifts, a heavenly store: With life immortal crowns our heads, When earth's frail comforts please no more.

1 Lo! what an entertaining sight
Those friendly brethren prove,
Whose cheerful hearts in bands unite,
Of harmony and love!

2 Where streams of bliss from Christ the spring Descend to every soul;

And heavenly peace, with balmy wing,
Shades and bedews the whole.

3 'Tis pleasant as the morning dews
That fall on Zion's hill,

Where God his mildest glory shows,
And makes his grace distil.

1 PARTNERS of a glorious hope, Lift your hearts and voices up; Jointly let us rise and sing,

Christ, our Prophet, Priest and King;
While we walk with him in light,
God doth still our hearts unite:
Dearest fellowship we prove,
In a common Savior's love.

2 Hence may all our actions flow;
Love, the proof that Christ we know:
Mutual love the token be,

Lord, that we belong to thee.
Love, thine image love, impart,
Stamp it on our face and heart;
Only love to us be giv'n;
Lord, we ask no other heav'n.

589. H. M.

1 How beautiful the sight Of brethren, who agree In friendship to unite,

And bonds of charity!

'Tis like the precious ointment shed O'er all his robes from Aaron's head.

2 'Tis like the dews that fill

The cups of Hermon's flowers,
Or Zion's fruitful hill,

Bright with the drops of showers, When mingling odors breathe around, And glory rests on all the ground.

590. C. M.

1 SPIRIT of peace! celestial Dove!
How excellent thy praise!
No richer gift than Christian love
Thy gracious power displays.

2 Sweet as the dew on herb and flower, That silently distils,

At evening's soft and balmy hour,
On Zion's fruitful hills:-

3 So, with mild influence from above,
Shall promised grace descend,
Till universal peace and love
O'er all the earth extend.

1 How sweet, how heav'nly is the sight,
When those that love the Lord,
In one another's peace delight,
And so fulfil his word.

2 O may we feel each brother's sigh,
And with him bear a part:

May sorrows flow from eye to eye,
And joy from heart to heart.

3 Free us from envy, scorn, and pride, Our wishes fix above;

May each his brother's failings hide,
And show a brother's love.

THE CHRISTIAN WARFARE.

592. C. M.

1 STAND nobly at your sev'ral posts,
Ye soldiers of the Lord!

Your bulwark is the God of hosts,
His word of truth your sword.
In vain against you may unite
The darkest powers of hell,
Jesus, our Captain, braved their might,
And conquer'd, though he fell.

2 He fell but soon triumphant rose,
And reigns as victor now;

Strong in the Lord, he foil'd our foes;
Let crowns adorn his brow!
His weakest soldiers, through his might,
Can now those foes repel,
Our panoply of heavenly light
Defends our spirits well.

3 No cowards in our ranks we want,
Who'll meanly yield, or fly,

But men whom dangers cannot daunt―
Who're not afraid to die.

Stand, then, with courage at your posts,
Ye soldiers of the Lord!

Your bulwark is the God of hosts,

His word of truth your sword.

[blocks in formation]

1 HARK, how the watchmen cry!
Attend the trumpet's sound;
Stand to your arms, the foe is nigh;
The powers of hell surround.
Who bow to Christ's command,
Your arms and hearts prepare;
The day of battle is at hand!
Go forth to glorious war.

2 Go up with Christ your Head,
Your Captain's footsteps see;
Follow your Captain, and be led
To certain victory.

All pow'r to him is giv❜n,
He ever reigns the same:
Salvation, happiness, and heav'n,
Are all in Jesus' name.

594. S. M.

1 SOLDIERS of Christ, arise

And put your armor on, Strong in the strength which God supplies Through his anointed Son;

Strong in the Lord of Hosts,

And in his mighty power:
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts,
Is more than conqueror.

2 Stand then in his great might,
With all his strength endu'd;
But take to arm you for the fight,
The panoply of God:
