2 Oh, tell of His might, oh, sing of His grace; Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath deep thunder-clouds form,

And dark is His path on the wings of the

storm.

3 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail;
Thy mercies how tender! how firm to the
end!

Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.
4 Oh, measureless might! ineffable love!
While angels delight to hymn Thee above,
The humbler creation, tho' feeble their lays,
With true adoration shall lisp to Thy praise,

139 OBJECT of my first desire,

Jesus, crucified for me; 7s. All to happiness aspire;

I would seek it, Lord, in Thee:
Thee to praise, and Thee to know,
Make the joys of saints below:
Thee to see and Thee to love,
Make the bliss of saints above.

2 Lord, it is not life to live,

If Thy presence Thou deny;
Lord, if Thou Thy presence give,
'Tis no longer death to die;
Source and Giver of repose,
Only from Thy love it flows:
Peace and happiness are Thine;
Mine they are, if Thou art mine.

140 OFT as the bell, with solemn toll,

L.

Speaks the departure of a soul:
Let each one ask himself, "Am I
Prepar'd, should I be call'd to die?"

2 Only this frail and fleeting breath
Preserves me from the jaws of death:
Soon as it fails at once I'm gone,
And sink into a world unknown.
3 Then, leaving all I lov'd below,
To God's tribunal I must go;
Must hear the Judge pronounce my fate,
And fix my everlasting state.

4 Lord Jesus, help me now to flee,
And fix my hope alone on Thee;
Apply Thy blood, Thy Spirit give,
Subdue my sin, and let me live.

141 OFT in danger, oft in woe,

[ocr errors]

Onward, Christian! onward go;
Fight the fight, maintain the strife,
Strengthen'd with the bread of life.
2 Let not sorrow dim thine eye,
Soon shall ev'ry tear be dry;
Let not fears thy course impede,
Great thy strength if great thy need.
3 Onward, Christian! onward go,
Join the war and face the foe;
Fight, nor think the battle long,
Soon shall vict'ry wake thy song.
4 Shrink not, Christian; wilt thou yield?
Wilt thou quit the painful field?
See! thy Captain leads the way;
Onward, Christian! win the day.
5 Onward, then, to glory move!
More than conqueror thou shalt prove;
Still through danger, toil, and woe,
Christian soldier, onward go.

142 PLUNG'D in a gulf of dark despair,

C.

We wretched sinners lay,

Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimmering ray,

2 With pitying eyes, the Prince of Peace
Beheld our helpless grief;

He came, and (oh, amazing love!)
He died for our relief.

3 Oh! for this love let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break,
And ev'ry nation, ev'ry tongue,
The Saviour's praises speak.

143 POUR, Lord, Thy Spirit from on high,
Thy ministering servants bless;

8.7.

Graces and gifts to each supply,

And clothe Thy priests with righteousness, 2 Wisdom and zeal and faith impart,

Firmness and meekness from above,
To bear Thy people on their heart,
And love the souls whom Thou dost love.
3 To watch and pray, and never faint,
By day and night on guard to keep,
To warn the sinner, cheer the saint,
Nourish Thy lambs, and feed Thy sheep.
4 Then, when their work is finished here,
Let them in hope their charge resign ;
When the Chief Shepherd shall appear,
May they with crowns of glory shine.

144 PRAISE the Lord! ye heavens, adore Him,
Praise Him, angels, in the height;
Sun and moon, rejoice before Him,
Praise Him, all ye stars and light.
Praise the Lord! for He hath spoken,
Worlds his mighty voice obey'd;
Laws which never shall be broken
For their guidance hath He made.
2 Praise the Lord! for He is glorious;
Never shall His promise fail;

God will make His saints victorious,
Sin and death shall not prevail.

Praise the God of our salvation;
Hosts on high His power proclaim;
Heaven and earth and all creation
Laud and magnify His name.

145 PRAISE to God, immortal praise

7s.

For the love that crowns our days;
Bounteous source of every joy,
Let Thy praise our tongues employ;
All to Thee, our God, we owe,
Source whence all our blessings flow.
2 All the plenty summer pours;
Autumn's rich o'erflowing stores;
Flocks that whiten all the plain;
Yellow sheaves of ripen'd grain:
Lord, for these our souls shall raise
Grateful vows and solemn praise.
3 Peace, prosperity, and health,
Private bliss, and public wealth,
Knowledge, with its gladd'ning streams,
Pure religion's holier beams:

Lord, for these our souls shall raise
Grateful vows and solemn praise.

146 PRAYER is the soul's sincere desire, Utter'd or unexpress'd;

C.

The motion of a hidden fire
That trembles in the breast.

2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear;

The upward glancing of an eye
When none but God is near.

3 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;

While angels in their songs rejoice,
And cry, "Behold he prays.'

4 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air,

His watchword at the gates of death;
He enters heaven by prayer.

5 O Thou, by whom we come to God,
The Life, the Truth, the Way;
The path of prayer Thyself hast trod :
Lord teach us how to pray.

1471 REJOICE, the Lord is King:

P.

Your God and King adore;
Mortals, give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore.

Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice; in Christ your King rejoice.

2 Jesus, the Saviour, reigns,

The God of truth and love;
When He had purg'd our stains,
He took His seat above;

Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice; in Christ your King rejoice.
3 His kingdom cannot fail,

He rules o'er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell

Are to the Saviour given;
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice; in Christ your King rejoice.

4 Rejoice in glorious hope,

Jesus the Judge shall come

And take His servants up

To their eternal home;

We soon shall hear th' archangel's voice;
The trump of God shall sound, Rejoice.

1481 Rof the revolving year;

EVIEW, my soul, the narrow bounds

C. How swift the weeks complete their rounds!
How short the months appear!
