33 COME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,

And lighten with celestial fire!
6 8s. Thou the anointing Spirit art,
Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart ;
Thy blessed unction from above
Is comfort, life, and fire of love.
2 Enable with perpetual light
The dullness of our blinded sight;
Anoint and cheer our soiled face
With the abundance of thy grace;
Keep far our foes, give peace at home;
Where Thou art Guide, no ill can come.

3 Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And Thee of both, to be but one;
That through the ages all along,
This, this may be our endless song:
Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

34 COME, Holy Spirit, come,

S.

Let Thy bright beams arise;
Dispel the sorrow from our minds,
The darkness from our eyes.

Convince us all of sin;
Then lead to Jesu's blood,

And to our wond'ring view reveal
The pard'ning love of God.

Revive our drooping faith,

Our doubts and fears remove;

And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.

Dwell Thou within our hearts,
Our minds from bondage free;

So shall we know, and praise, and love,
The Father, Son, and Thee.

35 COME, Holy Spirit, Heav'nly Dove,

C.

With all Thy quick'ning powers!
Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 See how we grovel here below,
Fond of these earthly toys!
Our souls, how heavily they go
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Come, Holy Spirit, Heav'nly Dove,
With all Thy quick'ning powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

36 COME

C.

OME, let us join our cheerful songs
With angels round the throne;
Ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
But all their joys are one.

2 "Worthy the Lamb that died," they cry,
66 To be exalted thus:

66

Worthy the Lamb," our hearts reply,
"For He was slain for us."

3 Jesus is worthy to receive

Honour and power divine;

And blessings more than we can give
Be, Lord, for ever Thine.

4 Let all creation join in one,
To bless the sacred name
Of Him that sits upon the throne,
And to adore the Lamb.

37 C If all our ways be right:

OME, let us search our hearts, and

C. Is God's great rule of equity
Our practice and delight?

2 Have we to others truly done
As we would have them do?
Envious, unkind, and false to none;
But always just and true?

3 In vain we speak of Jesu's blood,
And place in Him our trust,
If, while we boast our love to God,
We prove to men unjust.

4 Thou, before whom we stand in awe,
And tremble and obey,

Write in our hearts Thy perfect law,
And keep us in Thy way.

38 COME, my soul, thy suit prepare,

7s.

Jesus loves to answer prayer;
He Himself has bid theè pray,
Therefore will not say thee nay.
2 Thou art coming to a King,
Large petitions with thee bring;
For His grace and power are such,
None can ever ask too much.

3 With my burden I begin,
Lord, remove this load of sin!
Let Thy blood, for sinners spilt,
Set my conscience free from guilt.
4 Lord, I come to Thee for rest!
Take possession of my breast;
There Thy blood-bought right maintain,
And without a rival reign.

39 COME, Thou long-expected Jesus,

Born to set Thy people free;
8. 7. From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee:
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;

Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

2 Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child, and yet a King;
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit,
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.

aid

CREATOR Spirit! by who fest were laid,

L. Come, visit ev'ry humble mind;
Come, pour Thy joys on all mankind;
From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make us temples meet for Thee.
2 Thrice holy Fount! thrice holy Fire!
Our hearts with heav'nly love inspire;
Our frailty help, our vice control,
And calm the passions of the soul;
Come, and Thy sacred unction bring
To sanctify us while we sing.

3 Plenteous of grace, descend from high,
Rich in Thy sevenfold energy:
Give us Thyself, that we may see
The Father and the Son by Thee:
Make us eternal truths receive,
And practise all that we believe.
4 Immortal honour, endless fame,
Attend th' Almighty Father's name!
The Saviour Son be glorified,

Who for lost man's redemption died!
And equal adoration be,

Eternal Comforter, to Thee!

41 DAY of judgment, day of wonders!

P.

Hark! the trumpet's awful sound,

Louder than ten thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round!

How the summons

Will the sinner's heart confound!

2 See the Judge our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine!
You who long for His appearing,
Then shall say, "This God is mine!"
Gracious Saviour!

Own me in that day for Thine!
8 At His call the dead awaken,
Rise to life from earth and sea:
All the powers of nature, shaken
By His looks, prepare to flee:
Careless sinner!

What will then become of thee?

4 Then to those who have confessed,
Lov'd, and serv'd the Lord below,
"Come near, ye blessed,
Take the kingdom I bestow :

He will say,

You for ever

Shall my love and glory know."

42 DREAD Jehovah, God of nations,

From Thy temple in the skies 8. 7. Hear Thy people's supplications, Now for their deliverance rise.

2 Lo! with deep contrition turning,
Humbly at Thy feet we bend;
Hear us fasting, praying, mourning,
Hear us, spare us, and defend.

3 Though our sins, our hearts confounding,
Long and loud for vengeance call,
Thou hast mercy more abounding,
Jesus' blood can cleanse from all.

4 Let that love veil our transgression,
Let that blood our guilt efface;
Save Thy people from oppression,
Save from spoil Thy holy place.
