54 FROM all that dwell below the skies,

L.

Let the Creator's praise arise;
Let the Redeemer's name be sung
Through ev'ry land, by ev'ry tongue.
2 Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord,
Eternal truth attends Thy word;

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.

55 From India's coral strand, FROM

ROM Greenland's icy mountains,

7.6. Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand:
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain

2 What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle;
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile;
In vain, with lavish kindness,
The gifts of God are strewn,
The heathen, in their blindness,
Bow down to wood and stone.

8 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
By wisdom from on high-
Shall we to man benighted
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation, oh, salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation

Has learnt Messiah's name.

4 Waft, waft, ye winds, his story;
And you, ye waters, roll;
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole:

نانا

Till o'er our ransom'd nature,
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign.

56 GIVE to our God immortal praise,

L.

Mercy and truth are all His ways:
Wonders of grace to God belong;
Repeat His mercies in your song.
2 He built the earth, he spread the sky,
And fix'd the starry lights on high;
Wonders of grace to God belong,
Repeat His mercies in your song.
3 He sent His son with power to save
From guilt, and darkness, and the grave;
Wonders of grace to God belong,

Repeat His mercies in your song.

4 Through this vain world He guides our feet,
And leads us to His heav'nly seat;
Wonders of grace to God belong,
Repeat His mercies in your song.

57 GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken,

8.7.

Zion, city of our God;

He, whose word cannot be broken,
Form'd thee for His own abode:
On the Rock of Ages founded,

What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.
2 See! the streams of living waters
Springing from eternal love,
Well supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove:

Who can faint while such a river

Ever flows their thirst t' assuage;
Grace, which like the Lord, the giver,
Never fails from age to age.

3 Saviour, if of Zion's city

I, through grace, a member am,
Let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in Thy name!
Fading is the worldling's pleasure,
All his boasted pomp and show;
Solid joys and lasting treasure
None but Zion's children know.

YLORY be to God on high,

58 G God, whose glory fills the sky;

7s.

59

Peace on earth, and man forgiven,
Man, the well-beloved of Heaven.
2 Hail, by all Thy works ador'd!
Hail, the everlasting Lord!
All Thy glories we confess,
Infinite and numberless.

3 Holy Spirit, Thee we own;
Thee, O Christ, the only Son!
Lamb of God for sinners slain,
Saviour of offending men.

4 Praise the name of God Most High;
Praise Him, all below the sky;
Praise Him, all ye heav'nly host,
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

G1

LORY to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light.
L.. Keep me, oh keep me, King of Kings,
Under Thine own Almighty wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the awful day.

60

C.

4 Oh may my soul on Thee repose,
And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vig'rous make
To serve my God when I awake.

Praise God from whom, &c.

GOD

OD moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

2 Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up His bright designs,
And works His sov'reign will.

3 Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take!
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

4 Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

GOD of our life, to Thee we call,

61 G

Afflicted at Thy feet we fall: L. When the great water-floods prevail, Leave not our trembling hearts to fail! 2 Friend of the friendless and the faint, Where shall we lodge our sad complaint? Where but with Thee, whose open door Invites the friendless and the poor? 3 Did ever sinner plead with Thee And thou refuse his lowly plea? Does not Thy word still pledg'd remain, That none shall seek Thy face in vain? 4 Then hear, O Lord, our humble cry, And bend on us Thy pitying eye; To Thee their prayer Thy people make; Hear us for our Redeemer's sake.

62 G My grateful pow'rs shall sound thy praise;

OD of my life, thro' all my days,

L

My song shall wake with op'ning light,
And warble to the silent night.

When anxious cares would break my rest,
And grief would tear my throbbing breast,
Thy tuneful praise I'll raise on high,
And check the murmur and the sigh.
When death o'er nature shall prevail,
And all the pow'rs of language fail;
Joy thro' my swimming eyes shall break,
And mean the thanks I cannot speak.
4 And oh, when that last conflict's o'er,
And I am chain'd to flesh no more,
With what glad accents shall I rise,
To join the music of the skies!

63 Garmonious to the ear;

RACE! 'tis a joyful sound,

S.

4

Heav'n with the echo shall resound,
And all the earth shall hear.

Grace first contriv'd a way

To save rebellious man;
And all the steps that grace display,
Which drew the wondrous plan.
Grace led my wand'ring feet
To tread the heav'nly road;
And new supplies each hour I meet,
While pressing on to God.

Grace all the work shall crown
Through everlasting days;

It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves the praise.

64 GRACIOUS Spirit, Love divine!

Let Thy light around us shine;

7s. All our guilty fears remove,
Fill us with Thy peace and love.
