PSALMS AND HYMNS.

1.

Creation.

ALL dead and silent was the earth,
In deepest night it lay,

Th' Eternal spake creation's word,
And called to being day.

C.M.

2 God spake the murmuring waters fled, They left their deep repose;

Wide over-arching heaven's blue vault
The firmament arose.

3 God spake the hills and plains put on
Their robe of freshest green ;
-Dark forests in the valleys wave,
And budding trees are seen.

4 God spake and on the new-dress'd earth
Soft smil'd the glowing sun;
Then full of joy he sprang aloft,
His heavenly course to run.

5 God spake the waters teem with life,
The tenants of the floods;
The many colour'd winged birds

Dart quickly through the woods.

6 God spake: He look'd on earth and heaven (Angels around Him stood);

In His own image, man He made,
Pronouncing all was good.

2. Bishop Kenn's Morning Hymn.

AWAKE, my soul ! and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;

Shake off dull sloth, and early rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

L.M.

2 Glory to Thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast preserv'd me while I slept ;
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

3 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew,
Disperse my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

4 Direct, control, suggest, this day,
Whate'er I do, whate'er I say;

That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

5 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Morning Hymn.

C.M.

THROUGH all the dangers of the night
Preserv'd, O Lord, by Thee,

Again we hail the cheerful light,
Again we bow the knee.

2 Preserve us, Lord, throughout the day,
And guide us by Thine arm ;
For they are safe, and only they,
Whom Thou preserv'st from harm.

8 Let all our words, and all our ways,
Declare that we are Thine,

That so the light of truth and grace
Before the world may shine.
4 Nor let us turn away from Thee;
Dear Saviour, hold us fast,
Till, with immortal eyes, we see
Thy glorious face at last.

Bishop Kenn's Evening Hymn.
GLORY to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath the shadow of Thy wings.
2 Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ills that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious in the judgment day.
4 O may my soul on Thee repose,
And may sweet sleep my eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vig'rous make
To serve my God, when I awake.
5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.

6 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

5.

Evening Hymn.

8,7,7.

THRO' the day Thy love hath spar'd us;
Now we lay us down to rest;
Through the silent watches guard us;
Let no foe our peace molest;
Jesus, Thou our Guardian be;
Sweet it is to trust in Thee.

2 Pilgrims here on earth, and strangers,
Dwelling in the midst of foes;
Us and ours preserve from danger;
In Thine arms may we repose:
And, when life's sad day is past,
Rest with Thee in heav'n at last.

Birth of Christ.

HARK! the herald angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King;
"Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcil'd."

66

2 Joyful, all

ye

nations rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

SEVENS.

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

3 Mild, He lays His glory by;

Born, that men no more might die;
Born, to raise the sons of earth;
Born, to give them second birth,
4 "Glory to the new-born King;"
Let us all the anthem sing,-

66

Peace on earth, and mercy mild, "God and sinners reconcil'd."
