3 Ah trust not to your fleeting breath,
Nor call your time your own:
Around you see the scythe of death
Is mowing thousands down.

4 And

you

who hitherto are spar'd,

Must shortly yield your lives; Your wisdom is to be prepar'd Before the stroke arrives.

5 The grass, when dead, revives no more; You die to live again ;

But ah! if death should prove the door

To everlasting pain.

6 Lord, help us to obey Thy call,

That from our sins set free,

When, like the grass, our bodies fall,
Our souls may spring to Thee.
229. Prayer and praise.
TO Thee, my God and Saviour,
My heart exulting sings,
Rejoicing in Thy favour,
Almighty King of kings.
I'll celebrate Thy glory,
With all Thy saints above;
And tell the joyful story,
Of Thy redeeming love.
2 Soon as the morn with roses
Bedecks the dewy east,
And when the sun reposes
Upon the ocean's breast;
My voice in supplication

Well pleased Thou shalt hear :
Oh grant me Thy salvation,
And to my soul draw near.

7.6.

3 By Thee, through life supported,
I pass the dangerous road,
With heavenly hosts escorted
Up to their bright abode:
There cast my crown before Thee,
Now all my conflicts o'er,
And day and night adore Thee;
What can an angel more?

230.

Ascension Day.

T.M.

GOD is gone up on high

With a triumphant noise;

The clarions of the sky

Proclaim th' angelic joys.

Join, all the earth, rejoice and sing;
Glory ascribe to glory's King.

2 God seen in flesh below,

For us He reigns above;
Let all the nations know
The Saviour's conquering love.
Join, &c.

3 High on His holy seat,

He bears the righteous sway;
His foes beneath His feet
Shall sink and die away!
Join, &c.

4 His foes and ours are one,

Satan, the world, and sin;
But He shall tread them down,
And bring His kingdom in!

231.

Address to Jehovah.

Join, &c.

BLESSED be Thy name for ever,
Thou of life the guard and giver :

8's

Thou canst guard Thy creatures sleeping,
Heal the heart long broke with weeping.
God of stillness and of motion,
Of the desert and the ocean,
Of the mountain, rock, and river,
Blessed be Thy name for ever!

2 Thou, who slumberest not, nor sleepest, Blest are they Thou kindly keepest: God of evening's parting ray,

Of midnight's gloom and dawning day,
That risest from the azure sea,
Like breathings of eternity;
God of life! that fade shall never,

Blessed be Thy name for ever!

232. House of God.

8,6,8.

HOW sacred is that chosen spot
Where praise and prayer arise,
While earth and time seem all forgot,
And faith unveils the skies:
Till visions bright in beauty roll
Around the tranc'd believer's soul!

2 And ever in this calm abode
May Thy deep Spirit be,
And guide us on the narrow road
That terminates in Thee,
While dews of Thy converting grace
Descend upon our guilty race.
3 Before the cross where Jesus bled,
On Calv'ry's fated hill,

With bended knee, and bowing head,
And soul devoutly still,

May each adoring sinner find
Salvation awe and soothe his mind.

4 And by Thy blood, and by Thy tears,
By all Thy pangs unknown!
Allay, O Lord, our rising fears,

And make these hearts Thine own ;
Till each with loud Hosanna sings,
Hail, Lord of lords! and King of kings!

233. Death of a Christian.

P.M.

THOU art gone to the grave! but we will not deplore thee,

Tho' sorrows and darkness encompass the tomb;

Thy Saviour has pass'd thro' its portal before thee,

And the lamp of His love is thy guide thro' the gloom.

2 Thou art gone to the grave! we no longer behold thee,

Nor tread the rough paths of the world by thy side;

But the wide arms of mercy are spread to enfold thee,

And sinners may hope, since the SINLESS has died!

3 Thou art gone to the grave! and its mansion forsaking,

Perhaps thy tried spirit in fear linger'd long: But the sunshine of heaven beam'd bright on thy waking,

And the sound which thou heard'st was the seraphim's song.

4 Thou art gone to the grave, but we will not deplore thee.

Whose God was thy ransom, thy guardian, and guide;

He gave thee and took thee, and He will restore thee,

And death hath no sting, for the Saviour hath died.

[blocks in formation]

THE Saviour's gentle voice

S.M.

Calls children to His breast;
He takes and folds them in His arms;
His blessings on them rest.

2 Forbid them not, nor scorn

An infant's humble claim ;

The heirs of heav'n are such as these;
For such the Saviour came.

2 Our little ones accept,

We yield them, Lord, to Thee;
Imploring, that as we are Thine,
Thine they may also be!

235. Paschal Lamb.

HAIL, Thou once despised Jesus!
Hail, Thou Galilean King!

Thou didst suffer to release us;
Thou didst free salvation bring.
Hail, Thou agonizing Saviour!
Bearer of our sin and shame,
By Thy merits we find favour;

Life is given through Thy name.
2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed,
All our sins on Thee were laid :
By almighty love anointed,

Thou hast full atonement made:
