3 This day the Holy Spirit came
With fiery tongues of cloven flame;-
O Spirit, fill our hearts this day.

With grace to hear, and grace to pray.
4 O day of LIGHT, and LIFE, and GRACE!
From earthly toils sweet resting place!
Thy hallowed hours, best gift of love,
Give we again to God above!

285.

Missionary Hymn.

FAR o'er earth's remotest regions,
Glorious gospel speed thy way;
Spirit, source of ev'ry blessing-
Chase the shades of night away-
With salvation

Let Thy glorious work be crown'd.
2 Afric's sons release from bondage,
By the pow'r Thy gospel wields-
Bounteous land, where balmy breezes
Fans our earth's most fertile fields;
Christ's salvation

P.M.

Freedom full, and lasting yields.
3 Ocean's isles, and wealthy India—
Western lands, where satan reigns;
Rescue from the tyrant's thraldom,
Burst their bands, and break their chains;
Gracious Spirit!

Let the sin-born captive free.
4 Holy Ghost, the night dispelling,
Rise with healing on Thy wings-
Heaven's eternal light revealing—
With the peace Thy presence brings,
Blessed Spirit!

Hasten Christ our Saviour's reign!

286.

Worthy the Lamb.

COME, ye saints of God,

Declare through earth abroad,
Our Saviour's fame:

Tell what His love has done;
Trust in His name alone;
Sing loudly to His throne,
"Worthy the Lamb!"

2 Hence, gloomy doubts and fears,
Dry up your mournful tears;
Swell the glad theme;
To Christ, our gracious King,
Strike each melodious string,
Join heart and voice to sing
Worthy the Lamb!"

3 Hark, how the choirs above,
Filled with the Saviour's love,
Dwell on His name!

There, too, may we be found,
With light and glory crowned;
While all the heavens resound,
"Worthy the Lamb!"

287. The Communion of Saints.

P.M.

C.M.

THE saints on earth, and those above,
But one communion make;

Joined to their Lord in bonds of love,
All of His grace partake.

2 One family, we dwell in Him;

One church, above, beneath;

Though now divided by the stream-
The narrow stream-of death.

3 One army of the living God,
To His command we bow;

Part of the host have cross'd the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 Lo! thousands to their endless home
Are swiftly borne away;
And we must to the margin come
And launch, ere long, as they.

5 Lord Jesus, be our constant guide ;-
Then, when the word is given,
Bid death's cold flood, its waves divide,
And land us safe in heaven.

Matthew VI. 33.

P.M.

THOUGH troubles assail, and dangers affright;

Though friends shall all fail, and foes all unite;

Yet one thing secures us,-whatever betide, The scripture assures us-the Lord will provide.

2 No strength of our own, nor goodness we claim;

Yet if we have known the Saviour's great

name,

In Him, our strong tower, we safely may

hide;

The Lord is our power, the Lord will provide.

3 When fled is our youth, and death is in

sight,

The word, of His truth, shall still be our

light,

Though tempests may lower, with Christ on our side,

In death's darkest hour the Lord shall

provide.

289. Revelations XV. 3.

AWAKE and sing the song

Of Moses and the Lamb;

Wake every heart and every tongue
To praise the Saviour's name.

2 Sing of His dying love;

Sing of His rising power;
Sing how he intercedes above
For those whose sins He bore.

3 Sing till we feel the heart

Ascending with the tongue :
Let every meaner joy depart,
And grace inspire the song.
4 Sing on your heavenly way,

Ye ransomed sinners sing;
Sing on, rejoicing every day
In Christ, th' eternal king.

5 Soon shall ye hear Him say-
"Ye blessed children come"-
Soon will He call us hence away,
And take His pilgrims home.

6 Soon shall th' enraptur'd tongue
His endless praise proclaim,
And sweeter voices swell the song
Of Moses and the Lamb!

Psalm LXVII.

GRACIOUS Father, God of glory,

Cause Thy face on us to shine;
Grant Thy banished ones salvation,
Fill our hearts with love divine.
God of glory-

P.M.

Hear us from Thy dwelling place. 2 May Thy way be seen in regions— Now in darkness, dread and drear; May Thy saving health speed-healing, Sorrowing souls to soothe and cheer; Lord of glory

Hear us from Thy dwelling place. 3 O let all the people praise Thee, Whilst they know Thy truth and ways; Hallelujahs-loud resounding

Let the nations gladly raise;

Let them praise Thee,—

Lord of lords, and King of kings! 4 Then shall earth her increase give us, Watered by each fruitful shower; Then shall seasons, crowned with goodness, Magnify their Maker's power,God shall bless us

From His glorious dwelling place. 5 Gracious Father,-God of glory, Gracious Spirit,—God of love, Gracious Saviour,-God of mercy; Triune Lord of Hosts above,Save Thy banished,

Raise us to Thy dwelling place.

Let ebery thing that has breath praise the Lord.
