16. Before Public or Private Worship. L.M. COME, Holy Spirit, calm my mind, And fit me to approach my God ;· Remove each vain, each worldly thought, And lead me to Thy blest abode. 2 Hast Thou imparted to my soul

A living spark of heavenly fire? Oh kindle now the sacred flame;

Teach me to burn with pure desire. 3 Impress upon my wandering heart,

The love that Christ for sinners bore; And give a new a contrite heart, A heart the Saviour to adore.

[blocks in formation]

2 But the pains which He endur'd,
Our salvation have procured,
Now He reigns above the sky,
Where the angels ever cry.

3 Glory be to God our King,
Thine eternal love we sing ;
Thou hast bar'd Thine arm divine,
Wrought salvation, made us Thine.

4 Blessing, thankful all our days,
May we pray, rejoice, and praise,
Till the glorious trump shall sound,
And our raptur'd hearts rebound.

Psalm XVIII.

C.M.

THRO' earth the Saviour's name shall spread,

His foes resist no more;

O'er heathen lands proclaim'd the head,
Let heathen lands adore.

2 Nations thro' distant climes unknown,
Their duty shall afford,

Shall hear His name, His glory own,
And haste to serve their Lord.

3 The strangers of the Gentile race
Shall with His church attend;
Shall bow, submissive to His grace,
And in His temples bend.

4 He lives, the Lord Jehovah lives,
My rock, I bless His name!
Jesus, my God, salvation gives!
Through earth exalt His fame.

THE spacious firmament on high,

L.M.

With all the blue ethereal sky,
And spangled heav'ns, a shining frame,
Their great Original proclaim.

Th' unwearied sun from day to day,
Doth his Creator's power display,
And publishes to ev'ry land
The work of an Almighty hand.

2 Soon as the evening shades prevail,

The moon takes up

the wond'rous tale,

And nightly to the list'ning earth,
Repeats the story of her birth.

Whilst all the stars that round her burn,
And all the planets in their turn,
Confirm the tidings as they roll,

And spread the truth from pole to pole.
3 What though, in solemn silence, all
Move round the dark terrestrial ball;
What though no real voice, or sound,
Amid their radiant orbs be found:
In Reason's ear they all rejoice,
And utter forth a glorious voice;
For ever singing as they shine,
"The hand that made us is divine."

20. Before Public or Private Worship. L.M. "WHERE two or three, with sweet accord, Obedient to their Sovereign Lord,

Meet to recount His acts of grace,
And offer solemn prayer and praise :
2 " There," says the Saviour," will I be,
Amid this little company;

To them unveil my smiling face,
And shed my glories round the place."
3 We meet at Thy command, O Lord,
Relying on Thy faithful word:

Now send Thy Spirit from above,
And fill our hearts with heavenly love.

Teaching of Jesus.

L.M.

HOW sweetly flow'd the Gospel sound From lips of gentleness and grace, When list'ning thousands gathered round, And joy and rev'rence fill'd the place. 2 From heaven He came, of heaven He spoke, To heaven He led His followers' way;

Dark clouds of gloomy night He broke,
Unveiling an immortal day.

3" Come, wanderers, to my Father's home,
Come, all ye weary ones, and rest :"
Yes, sacred Teacher, we will come,
Obey Thee, love Thee, and be blest!
4 Decay then, tenements of dust,
Pillars of earthly pride, decay;
A nobler mansion waits the just,
And Jesus has prepar'd the way.

22.

The Cross of Christ.

WHEN I survey the wondrous cross

L.M.

On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

3 See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down ;
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Psalm XXIII.

6,8.

THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,
And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;

My noon-day walks He shall attend, And all my midnight hours defend. 2 When in the sultry glebe I faint, Or on the thirsty mountains pant, To fertile vales and dewy meads, My weary, wand'ring steps he leads, Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow, Amid the verdant landscape flow. 3 Tho' in the paths of death I tread, With gloomy horrors overspread, My stedfast heart shall fear no ill, For Thou, O Lord, art with me still; Thy friendly crook shall give me aid, And guide me thro' the dreadful shade. 4 Though in a bare and rugged way, Through devious wilds I lonely stray, Thy bounty shall my pains beguile, The barren wilderness shall smile, With sudden greens and herbage crown'd, And streams shall murmur all around.

Psalm XXIV.

L.M.

OUR Lord is risen from the dead, The Saviour is gone up on high; The powers of hell are captive led, Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 Loose all your bars of massy light, And wide unfold th' ethereal scene, He claims these mansions as His right; Receive the King of Glory in!

3 Who is the King of Glory? who?

The Lord that all His foes o'ercame;
