Sin, death, the world, and hell o'erthrew ; And Jesus is the Conqueror's name! 4 Lo! His triumphal chariot waits,

And angels chaunt the solemn lay;
Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates;
Ye everlasting doors, give way.

5 Who is the King of Glory? who?
The Lord of glorious power possess'd;
The King of saints, and angels too;
God over all, for ever blest!

What is Prayer?

PRAYER is the soul's sincere desire,
Utter'd or unexpress'd;

The motion of a hidden fire,

That trembles in the breast.

2 Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear;

The upward glancing of an eye,
When none but God is near.

3 Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
The Christian's native air;

His watchword at the gates of death;
He enters heaven with prayer.

4 Prayer is the contrite sinner's voice,
Returning from his ways;

While angels in their songs rejoice,
And say, "Behold, he prays."

5 Oh Thou, by whom we come to God,
The Life, the Truth, the Way!
The path of prayer Thyself hast trod,
Lord teach us how to pray!

God's Works.

P.M.

WHAT wisdom is shewn, what power display'd,

In all that God's hand hath fashion'd and made;

The earth full of riches, 'tis beauty complete, The fathomless ocean, with wonders replete. 2 By knowledge supreme, by wisdom divine, God governs the world with gracious design; O'er beast, bird, and insect, his Providence reigns,

Whose will first created, whose love still sustains.

3 Exalted, O Lord, in glory secure,

The works Thou hast made thro' ages endure !

To life's latest moment, my soul ever raise The song of thanksgiving, the chorus of praise.

Christmas Day.

SEVENS.

BRIGHT and joyful is the morn,

For to us a child is born;

From the highest realms of heaven
Unto us a Son is given.

2 On His shoulder He shall bear
Power and majesty, and wear

On His vesture and His thigh,
Names most awful, names most high-
3 Wonderful in counsel He,
The incarnate Deity,

Sire of ages ne'er to cease,
King of kings, and Prince of peace,
4 Come and worship at His feet,
Yield to Christ the homage meet;
From His manger to His throne,
Homage due to God alone..

The Bible.

L.M.

HOLD the sacred Book of God,
To hear, and keep, and use it free;
But holy martyrs shed their blood
To win this word of life for me!

2 With steady faith in Christ alone,
The threats of impious power they spurn'd,
And, bold that holy faith to own,
They gave their bodies to be burn'd.

3 In heaven with palms they triumph now; We love to speak their honour'd names ; O may our lips and lives avow

The truth they kept through blood and flames!

4 We bear, we'll hold, the Christian name, Though hell oppose, and earth deride; We'll keep the faith thro' fear and shame; That faith for which our fathers died.

Resignation.

C.M.

WHEN musing sorrow weeps the past,
And mourns the present pain;

'Tis sweet to think of peace at last,
And feel that death is gain.

2 "Tis not that murmuring thoughts arise,
And dread a Father's will;
'Tis not that meek submission flies,
And would not suffer still;

3 It is that heaven-taught faith surveys
The path to realms of light,
And longs her eagle-plumes to raise,
And lose herself in sight.

4 It is that hope with ardour glows,
To see Him face to face,

Whose dying love no language knows
Sufficient art to trace.

5 Oh! let me wing my hallow'd flight
From earth-born woe and care;

And soar beyond these realms of night, My Saviour's bliss to share!

The Bible.

L.M.

SEND God's holy Book where'er
Or winds can waft, or waters bear;
Let India's sons its page revere,
Let Afric's land the blessing share.

2 Send it to where expanded wide
The South Sea rolls its farthest tide,
To ev'ry island's distant shore

Make known the Saviour's grace and power. 3 Send it to ev'ry dungeon's gloom, Send it to ev'ry poor man's room, Nor cease the woe-worn to befriend, Nor cease the heavenly gift to send. 4 May ev'ry suffering child of woe

Its truth believe, its comforts know;

May every hand the treasure hold, And error's cloud away be roll'd. 5 O Holy Ghost! who gav'st the word, With Thine own truth Thy light afford, Give Thou the quickening, saving power, On all the earth Thy blessings shower.

31. Destruction of the Assyrians.

P.M.

THE Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold,

And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;

And the sheen

of their spears was like

stars on the sea,

When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee.

2 Like the leaves of the forest when summer

is green,

That host with their banners at sunset

were seen;

Like the leaves of the forest when autumn hath blown,

That host on the morrow lay wither'd and

strown.

3 For the angel of death spread his wings. on the blast,

And breath'd on the face of the foe as he

pass'd,

And the eyes of the sleepers wax'd deadly and chill,

And their hearts but once heav'd, and for ever grew still.
