4 And there lay the steed with his nostril all wide,

But thro' it there rolled not the breath of his pride;

And the foam of his gasping lay white on the turf,

And cold as the spray of the rock-beating surf,

5 And there lay the rider distorted and pale, With the dew on his brow, and the rust

on his mail :

And the tents were all silent, the banners alone,

The lances unlifted, the trumpet unblown. 6 And the widows of Ashur are loud in their

wail,

And the idols are broke in the temple of Baal;

And the might of the Gentile, unsmote by the sword,

Hath melted like snow, in the glance of

the Lord.

Sabbath.

L.M.

"And God blessed the Seventh day, and sanctified it."

(Gen. ii. 3.)

HAIL! sweet return of holy rest!

Sabbath by God supremely blest; Hail! sacred emblem of that day, When God shall wipe all tears away! 2 Jesu! in Thy dear name we plead, For grace to help in time of need; Humble, yet confident, we kneel, 'Till God His pard'ning love reveal.

3 May each tumultuous passion cease, And every soul be filled with peace; Sweetly may love our voices blend, Jointly our prayers to heaven ascend. 4 Unlock Thy sacred treasures, Lord; Reveal the glories of Thy word;

And feed us with that bread from heaven, By God in sweet compassion given.

The Husbandman's Prayer. (Heb. vi. 7.)

ALMIGHTY Maker of this earth,

L.M.

Who giv'st to every seed its birth, Thine heavenly blessing, Lord, command On all the labours of our hand.

2 In vain our seed around we throw, In vain we harrow where we sow, Except Thou wilt our efforts bless, And give the grain its due increase. 3 Open the windows of the sky,

And shower down mercies from on high: Crown with Thy goodness, Lord, the year, And let Thy blessings round appear. 4 All things in plenty, Lord, provide, That all mankind may be supplied, And so, with lifted hearts, we may Return Thee praises night and day.

Psalm XXXIV.

C.M.

THRO' all the changing scenes of life,
In trouble and in joy,

The praises of my God shall still
My heart and tongue employ.

2 Oh! magnify the Lord with me,
With me exalt His name;

When in distress on Him I call'd,
He to my succour came.

3 Oh! make but trial of His love;
Experience will decide,

How blest are they, and only they,
Who in His truth confide.

4 Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then Have nothing else to fear;

Make you

35.

His service your delight,
He'll make your wants His care.

The Sower.

YE sons of earth, prepare the plough,

Break up your fallow ground!

The Sower is gone forth to sow,
And scatter blessings round.
2 The seed that finds a stony soil,
Shoots forth a hasty blade;
But ill repays the sower's toil,
Soon wither'd, scorch'd, and dead.

3 The thorny ground is sure to balk
All hopes of harvest there:
We find a tall and sickly stalk,
But not the fruitful ear.

4 The beaten path, and highway side,
Receive the trust in vain,

The watchful birds the spoil divide,
And pick up all the grain.

C.M.

5 But where the Lord of grace and pow'r Has blest the happy field,

How plenteous is the golden store
The deep-wrought furrows yield!

6 Father of mercies, we have need
Of Thy preparing grace;

Let the same hand that gives the seed
Provide a fruitful place.

[blocks in formation]

TO praise the ever-bounteous Lord,
My soul, wake all thy powers;

He calls, and at His voice come forth,
The smiling harvest hours.

2 His cov'nant with the earth he keeps;
My tongue, His goodness sing;
Summer and winter know their time,
His harvest crowns the spring.

C.M.

3 Well-pleased the toiling swains behold.
The waving yellow crop :

With joy they bear the sheaves away,
And sow again in hope.

4 Thus teach me, Gracious God, to sow
The seeds of righteousness:

Smile on my soul, and with Thy beams
The ripening harvest bless.

The Seasons.

(Psalm CXLVII. 2, 7, 13, 18.)

C.M.

WITH songs and honours sounding loud,
Address the Lord on high:

Over the heavens He spreads His cloud,
And waters veil the sky

2 He sends His showers of blessings down, To cheer the plains below;

He makes the grass the mountains crown,
And corn in valleys grow.

3 His steady counsels change the face
Of the declining year;

He bids the sun cut short his race,
And wintry days appear.

4 His hoary frost, His fleecy snow,
Descend and clothe the ground;
The liquid streams forbear to flow,
In icy fetters bound.

5 He sends His word, and melts the snow,
The fields no longer mourn;
He calls the warmer gales to blow,
And bids the spring return.

6 The changing wind, the flying cloud,
Obey His mighty word:

With songs and honours sounding loud, Praise ye the Sovereign Lord.

Psalm XXIII.

JESUS is the Lord my Shepherd,
Then let fear be far away:

8.7,7.

From the lion and the leopard,
And from every beast of prey,
He will guard His helpless sheep;
Jesus loves His own to keep.

2 When the foe desired to have me,
Jesus said, "this sheep is mine ;"
And resigned His life to save me;
Jesus, what a love is Thine!

All victorious in its course,
Nothing can withstand its force.
