From sin and sorrow set us free,
And make us temples worthy Thee!

2 Chase from our minds th' infernal foe,
And peace, the fruit of love, bestow;
And lest our feet should haply stray,
Protect and guide us in the way:
Make us eternal truth receive,
And practise all that we believe.
3 Immortal honour, endless fame,
Attend the Almighty Father's name;
The Saviour Son be glorified,

Who for lost man's redemption died;
And equal adoration be,

Eternal Comforter, to Thee!

77.

At a Funeral.

C.M.

BENEATH our feet, and o'er our head,
Is equal warning given;

Beneath us lie the countless dead,

Above us is the heaven!

2 Death rides on every passing breeze,
He lurks in every flower;

Each season has its own disease,
Its peril every hour!

3 Turn, mortal, turn! thy danger know; Where'er thy foot can tread,

The earth rings hollow from below,
And warns thee of her dead!

4 Turn, sinner, turn! thy soul apply
To truths divinely given;

The bones that underneath thee lie
Shall live for hell or heaven.

78.

Psalm CIV.

P.M.

WORSHIP the King, all glorious
above;

O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of
Days;

Pavilioned in splendour, and girded with
praise.

2 O tell of His might; O sing of His grace; Whose robe is the light, whose canopy

space :

His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,

And dark is His path on the wings of the

storm.

3 This earth, with its store of wonders

untold,

Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old; Hath 'stablished it fast by a changeless decree,

And round it hath cast, like a mantle,

the sea.

4 Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite, It breathes in the air, it shines in the light; It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,

And sweetly distils in the dew and the rain. 5 Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,

In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail ; Thy mercies how tender, how sure to the end; Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

79.

"We Praise Thee, O God."

WE Thee, O Triune God, adore!

L.M.

Acknowledging Thy wondrous might! Whilst earth around, from shore to shore, Proclaims it thro' each day and night.

2 To Thee, aloud, archangel's cry!

The heavens and all the powers therein ! Thrice Holy Lord, Thou King on high, O'er cherub and o'er seraphim!

3 Apostles, Prophets, Martyrs, sing
In realms above their joyful praise,
And endless Hallelujahs ring

Thro' blissful and unnumbered days.
4 O Christ! Thou King of Glory, save
Thy ransomed heritage below;
O govern us, we humbly crave,

And raise us from this world of woe.
5 We pray Thee, keep each contrite soul
Secure from sin, by sovereign grace;
And when the last day's thunders roll,
Vouchsafe Thy mercy to our race.

80.

A Prayer.

P.M.

LORD, Thou hast enlarg'd our bounds, Here in Thy name once more we meet ; Let praise and prayer, in joyful sounds, Now rise before Thy mercy-seat.

Let praise ascend for sins forgiven,
And prayer from hearts that look to heaven,
To hail their Lord's appearing.

2 O Lord, let all Thy mercies flow
On those who worship in this place;
Let all the love of Jesus know,
The riches of His saving grace.
Let every wounded conscience feel
His mighty power to bless and heal;
And long for His appearing.

3 O let the Spirit's sovereign voice
Apply Thy word to every heart;
Awake, alarm, revive, rejoice,

Each soul, 'till all shall bear their part
In these Thy services of love;

Then join the glorious hosts above,
That herald Christ's appearing.

81.

Christ the best Friend.

ONE there is above all others,

P.M.

Well deserves the name of Friend;

His is love beyond a brother's,
Costly, free, and knows no end!
They who once His kindness
Find it everlasting love.

prove,

2 Which of all our friends, to save us,

Could, or would, have shed His blood;

But our Jesus died to have us
Reconcil'd in Him to God:
This was boundless love indeed!
Jesus is a friend in need!

3 When He lived on earth abased,
Friend of sinners was His name;
Now above all glory raised,

He rejoices in the same:

Still He calls them brethren, friends;
And to all their wants attends.

4 Oh, for grace our hearts to soften ; Teach us, Lord, at length to love; We, alas! forget too often

What a friend we have above :

But, when home our souls are brought,
We will love Thee as we ought.

82.

Confidence in God.

WHEN I can read my title clear

To mansions in the skies,

I bid farewell to every fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.

2 Should earth against my soul engage,
And hellish darts be hurl'd,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowħing world.

3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
And storms of sorrow fall,

May I but safely reach

my home, My God, my heaven, my all!

4 There shall I bathe my weary soul
In seas of heavenly rest,

And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

83.

Christ a Refuge in Distress.

C.M.

6,8.

GOD! my heart within me faints, And pours in sighs her deep complaints; Yet many a thought shall linger still, By Carmel's height, and Tabor's rill; The Olive Mount my Saviour trod, The rocks that saw and owned their God.
