AN APPENDIX TO THE

"RECORDS OF YORK CASTLE.”

BY

CAPT. A. W. TWYFORD, F.R.G.S.,
Gov. H.M. Prison, York Castle.

[blocks in formation]

"Yorke's not so great as old Yorke was of yore,
Yet Yorke it is, though wasted to the core ;
It is not Yorke which Ebrake built of old,
Nor yet that Yorke which was of Roman mould;
Yorke was the third time burnt, and what you see
Are Yorke's small ashes of antiquity."

BAINE'S "York," 1623.

GRIFFITH AND FARRAN,

(Successors to Newbery and Harris,)

WEST CORNER ST. PAUL'S CHURCHYARD, LONDON.

DEDICATION

TO THE

RT. HON. LORD HOUGHTON, D.C.L., F.R.G.S.,

&c., &c.

RAGO ascribes his success to words written by D'Alembert, which he read on the paper cover of his first book, at a time when he was greatly discouraged by its then non-success. They were, "Go on, sir; go on! The difficulties you meet will dissolve themselves as you advance. Proceed, and light will dawn, and shine with increased clearness on your path." "That maxim," says Arago, was my greatest master in mathematics," and following out those simple words did indeed make him the first astronomical mathematician of his age.

In my humble way I hope to be encouraged to "go on," and gain support in bringing back to light some ancient landmarks in a modern form.
