2 What wilt thou give me, &c.] Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee; and I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing. Gen. xii. 1, 2.

There is none greater in this house than "I" (" said Joseph"), neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife. Gen. xxxix. 4. 6. 9. And they (Joseph's brethren) came near to the steward of Joseph's house, &c. Gen. xliii. 19. 5 out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall 6 thy seed be. And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him 7 for righteousness. And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit

sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. 2 Sam. vii. 12. And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, behold my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life; how much more now may this Benjamite do it (Shimei)? 2 Sam. xvi. 11. And when "he" ("Sennacherib") was come into the house of his God, they that came forth out of his own bowels slew him there by the sword. 2 Chron. xxxii. 21. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Ps. cxlvii. 4. As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the seed of David my servant. Jer. xxxiii. 22. Neither because they are the seed of Abraham are they all children; but in Isaac shall thy seed be called: that is, they which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God, but the children of promise are counted for the seed. So shall thy seed, &c.] See com. on chap. xii. 2. And the angel of the Lord said, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude. Gen. xvi. 10. See preced. com. Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the Lord thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude. Deut. x. 22. But David took not the number of "them" ("the children of Isruel" &c.), from twenty years old, and under, because the Lord had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens. 1 Chron. xxvii. 23. Who (Abraham) against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, "so shall thy seed be." Rom. iv. 18. "Therefore" ("through faith") sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore, innumerable. Heb. xi. 12.

6 He believed, &c.] For what saith the

Scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness; even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works: cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God. Rom. iv. 3. 6. 9. 20. "Who" ("Jesus") was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification. Rom. iv. 25. Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness; that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Gal. iii. 6. 14. By faith Abraham when he was called to go out into a place, which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed. Heb. xi. 8. And the Scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness. James ii. 23.

Counted it to him for righteousness.] Then stood up Phinehas and executed judgment; and so the plague was stayed, and that was counted unto him for righteousness. Ps. cvi. 31. And he (Abraham) received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith, which he had, yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed to them also. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Rom. iv. 11. 22. To wit, God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and hath conmitted unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Cor. v. 19. Gal. iii. 6. See preced. com.

7 Brought thee out, &c.] And Haran died before his father Terah, in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot, &c. &c. and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan. Gen. xi. 28. 31. Now the Lord had said unto Abram, get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee. Gen. xii. 1. Thou art the Lord, the God who didst choose Abram, and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gavest him the name of Abraham. Nehem. ix. 7. The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Char

it. And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall 8 inherit it? And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three 9

ran; then came he out of the land of the Chaldeans, and dwelt in Charran; and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land wherein ye now dwell. Acts vii. 2. 4.

To give thee this land, &c.] See com. chap. xii. 7. And (thou O God), foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with "him" (" Abraham"), to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous. Nehem. ix. 8. Unto thee (Abraham) will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance; for he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant, and gave "them" ("the people") the lands of the heathen, and they inherited the labour of the people. Ps. cv. 11. 42. 44. For the promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. Rom. iv. 13.

8 Whereby shall I know, &c.] And Abraham said to his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh, and swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, but thou shalt go into my country and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. And "he" ("the servant") said, O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master Abraham, and let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink, and she shall say, drink: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master. Gen. xxiv. 2. 4. 13, 14. And "he" (" Gideon") said unto "him" ("the Lord"): if now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest

with me.

Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovah-Shalom. And Gideon said unto God, if thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said, behold I will put a fleece of wool in the floor, and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. And it was so, for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl-full of water. And Gideon said unto God, let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the

fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew. And God did so that night; for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground. Judges vi. 17. 24. 36 to 40. If they (the Philistines) say thus unto us "tarry" (or "be still") until we come, then we (Jonathan and his armour-bearer) will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them: but if they say thus, Come up unto us, then we will go up, for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand, and this shall be a sign unto us. 1 Sam. xiv. 9, 10. And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah, what shall be the sign that the Lord will heal me, and that I shall go up into the house of the Lord the third day? And Isaiah said, this sign shalt thou have of the Lord: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees, &c. 2 Kings xx. 8. Shew me a token for good (said David), that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed; because thou, Lord, hast holpen me and comforted me. Ps. lxxxvi. 17. Ask thee a sign of the Lord thy God (said God to Ahaz king of Judah, promising the Messiah), ask it either in the depth, or in the height above. Isa. vii. 11. And Zacharias said unto the angel, whereby shall I know this (that I shall have a son), for I a man old man, and my wife well stricken in years? Then said Mary unto the angel, how shall this be; seeing I know not a man? Luke i. 18. 34.

9 An heifer, &c.] And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket, by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son. Gen. xxii. 13. If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish; if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice, he shall bring it a male without blemish. And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the Lord be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons. Levit. i. 3. 10. 14. And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace-offering; if he offer it of the herd, whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord. And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace-offering unto the Lord be of the flock, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. Levit. iii. 1. 6. And he (Moses) said unto Aaron, take thee a young calf, for a sinoffering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord. Also a bullock and a ram, for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord. Levit. ix. 2. 4. And if "she" ("the woman") be not able to bring a lamb (for a burnt-offering), then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons. Lev.
