CHAPTER XVIII.

CHAP. XVIII.-1 Appeared unto him.] See com. chap. xv. 1. Gen. xvii. 1. 3. 22. And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me. Gen. xlviii. 3. And Moses answered and said, But behold they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The Lord hath not appeared unto thee. Exod. iv. 1. In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee. 2 Chron. i. 7. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran. Acts vii. 2.

Judges xiii. 3. 9. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Heb. xiii. 2.

Three men.] And the men turned their faces from thence, and went to Sodom. Gen.

He ran to meet them.] Be kindly affectionate one to another, distributing to the necessity of the saints; given to hospitality. Rom. xii. 10. 13.

Bowed himself, &c.] And Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. Gen. xxiii. 7. And he (Jacob) passed over before them (his company), and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his "brother" ("Esau "); and Leah, also, with her children, came near, and bowed themselves; and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves. Gen. xxxiii. 3. 7. And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. And "they" ("Joseph's brethren") answered, Thy servant, our father, is in good health, he is yet alive; and they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance. Gen. xliii. 26. 28. And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house, and they fell before him on the ground. Gen. xliv. 14. 3 Found favour, &c.] "I" ("Jacob") have oxen and asses, flocks, and men-servants, and women-servants, and I have sent to tell my "lord" ("Esau"), that I may find grace in thy sight. Gen. xxxii. 5.

Circuncised, &c.] See com. chap. xvii. 10. 14. In the self-same day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son; and all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were cir cumcised. Gen. xvii. 26, 27. For I know him (Abraham), that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to de justice and judgment. Gen. xviii. 19. And

to Hamor, and unto Shechem his son, bearkened all that went out of the gate of the city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city. Gen. xxxiv. 24. And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you by causing the people to be circumcised). J. v. 9. I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments. Ps. cxix. 60. Boast not thyself of to-morrow, for thou knowest what a day may bring forth. Prop. xxvii. 1. Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might, for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave, whither thou goest. Eccles. ix. 10. And (Paul) took and circumcised "him" ("Timotheus"), because of the Jews which were in those quarters. Acts xvi. 3. Circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law; but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. He is a Jew which is one inwardly: and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter: whose praise is not of men, bat of God. Rom. ii. 25. 29. Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also! for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. And they said, So do, as thou hast 6 said. And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and 7 make cakes upon the hearth. And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young

4 Wash your feet.] Behold now, my lords, (said Lot to the angels) Turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early and go on your ways. Gen. xix. 2. And the man (Abraham's servant) came into the house, and "he" ("Laban") ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for his camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him. Gen. xxiv. 32. And the man (Joseph's steward) brought the men (Joseph's brethren) into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender. Gen. xliii. 24. And she (Abigail) arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine (David's) handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my Lord. 1 Sam. xxv. 41. And he (Jesus) turned to the woman and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet; but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Luke vii. 44. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. I have given you (said Jesus) an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. John xiii. 5. 15. And these things give in charge, that they may be well reported for good works. If “she" (" a widow") have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, &c. &c. (let her be taken into the number). 1 Tim. v. 7. 10.

5 I will fetch a morsel, &c.] Depart not hence, I pray thee, until "I" ("Gideon") come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before "thee" (the "angel of the Lord.") Judges vi. 18. Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord, I pray thee let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee. Judges xiii. 15. Give us this day our daily bread.

Matt. 6. 11. Comfort ye your hearts.] The damsel's father said unto his "son-in-law" (the "Levite who married a concubine"), Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way. Judges xix. 5. (He, God, giveth) wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. Ps. civ. 15. For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem, and from Judah, the

stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water. Isa. iii. 1.

Therefore are ye come.] Only unto these men (said Lot to the Sodomites) do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. Gen. xix. 8. And Jacob said (to Esau) Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore have I seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me. Gen. xxxiii. 10.

6 Make ready, &c.] But the liberal deviseth liberal things, and by liberal things shall he stand. Isa. xxxii. 8. The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal till the whole was leavened. Matt. xiii. 33. Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her, therefore, that she help me! Luke x. 38. 40. And when she (Lydia) was baptized, and her household, she besought us (Paul and Silas), saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there; and she constrained us. Acts xvi. 15. (Be kindly affectioned one to another), distributing to the necessity of saints, given to hospitality. Rom. xii. 13. Brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Gal. v. 13. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them, and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. Heb. xiii. 3.

7 Ran unto the herd.] And he (Lot) pressed upon them greatly, and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. Gen. xix. 3. And Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord, I pray thee let us detain thee, until we shall have made ready a kid for thee. And the angel of the Lord said unto Manoah, Though thou detain me I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wilt offer a burnt-offering, thou must offer it unto the Lord, for Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the Lord. Judges xiii. 15, 16. (Woe unto them that are at ease in Zion, &c.)

man; and he hasted to dress it. And he took butter, and milk, 8 and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. And they said 9 unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? and he said, Behold, in the tent. And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to 10 the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent-door, which was behind him. Now 11 Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it

that lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flocks, and the calves out of the midst of the stall, but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Amos vi. 4. 6. Cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing. Mal. i. 14. My oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready; come unto the marriage. Matt. xxii. 4. And bring hither the fatted calf (said the father of the returning prodigal), and kill it; and let us eat and be merry. Thy father hath killed the fatted calf (said the servant to the brother of the prodigal), because he hath received him safe and sound. As soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf (said the brother of the prodigal to his father). Luke xv. 23. 27. 30.

8 He took butter, &c.] See Gen. xix. 3. preced. verse. He (the Lord) made him (Jacob) to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock; butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs. Deut. xxxii. 13, 14. He (Sisera) asked water, and she (Jael, the wife of Heber,) gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish. Judges v. 25.

He stood by them, &c.] For Judah rejoiced for the priests and for the Levites that waited. Nehem. xii. 44. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find watching. Verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. Luke xii. 37. Which of you having a servant will not rather say unto him, Make ready wherewith I may sup, and gird thyself and serve me till I have eaten and drunken, and afterwards thou shalt eat and drink. Luke xvii. 8. There (at Bethany) they made "him" ("Jesus") a supper, and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. John xii. 2. Use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Gal. v. 13. Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him and he with me. Rev. iii. 20. And they did eat.] See chap. xix. 3. at verse 7. and Judges xiii. 16. And it came to pass as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake and gave to them. And he took it (“ a broiled fish” and an honey

comb), and did eat before them. Luke xxiv. 30. 43. Not to all the people (shewed Christ himself openly), but unto witnesses chosen before of God (said Peter), even to us, who did eat and drink with him, after he rose from the dead. Acts x. 41.

9 Where is Sarah, &c.] And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? Gen. iv. 9.

In the tent.] And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife. Gen. xxiv. 67. And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents, but he found them not (found not his gods). Gen. xxxi. 33. Teach the young women to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, &c. Titus ii. 4, 5. 10 I will certainly return.] 14. and com. xvi. 10.

According to the time, &c.] See com. chap. xvii. 21. And he (Elisha) said, About this season, according to the time of life, "thou," ("the Shunammite woman") shalt embrace a son. And the woman conceived and bare a son, at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life. 2 Kings iv. 16, 17.

Sarah thy wife shall have a son.] See com. chap. xvii. 16. 19. 21. And the angel of the Lord appeared unto the woman (the wife of Manoah, the Danite,) and said unto her, Behold now thou art barren, and bearest not, but thou shalt conceive and bear a son; and no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines. Judges xiii. 3. 5. He who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh, but he of the freewoman was by promise. Gal. iv. 23.

And

11 Old and well stricken, &c.] Then Abraham fell upon his face and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? And shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? And Abraham was ninety years old and nine when he was circumcised. Gen. xvii. 17. 24. they both (Zacharias and Elizabeth) were now well stricken in years; and Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. And, behold (said the angel to Mary), thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also
