will slay me for my wife's sake. And yet indeed she is my sister; 12 she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, one that feared God and eschewed evil. Job i. 1. Behold the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. Job xxviii. 28. Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord. Ps. xiv. 4. The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. 12 Yet indeed she is my sister.] Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcha, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah. Ge. xi. 29. and com. Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister. Ge. xii. 13. and com.

13 God caused me, &c.] See chap. xii. 1. 9. 11. and com. And (God) said unto "him" ("Abraham"), Get thee out of thy country and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee. And he gave him none inheritance in it; no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child. Ac. vii. 3. 5.

This is thy kindness, &c.] And Saul said, Blessed be ye (Ziphites, who came to discover David) of the Lord, for ye have compassion on me. 1 Sa. xxiii. 21. They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them? Ps. lxiv. 5. Then Peter said unto her (Sapphira), How is it that ye (Ananias and Sapphira), have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Ac. v. 9.

Say of me, &c.] See chap. xii. 13.

14 Took sheep.] See verse 11. and chap. xii. 16. and com.

And restored him Sarah.] See verses 2. 7. and chap. xii. 19, 20. and com.

15 My land is before thee.] See chap. xiii. 9. and com. The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father (Israel) and brethren to dwell in the land of Goshen let them dwell (said Pharaoh to Joseph). Ge. xlvii. 6.

16 Thy brother, &c.] See verse 5. Open rebuke is better than secret love. Pr. xxvii. 5. And

Behold, he is to thee a covering, &c.] Abimelech charged all his people, saying, He that toucheth this man or his wife shall surely be put to death. Ge. xxvi. 11. "She" ("Rebekah") had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the fields to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master (Isaac). Therefore she took a vail, and covered herself. Ge. xxiv. 65.

Thus she was reproved.] And Joab answered (David), The Lord make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? Why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel? (in numbering the people). Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. And God was displeased with this thing. 1 Ch. xxi. 3, 4. 7. Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee; rebuke a wise man and he will love thee: give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. Pr. ix. 8, 9. Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge, but he that hateth reproof is brutish. Pr. xii. 1. As an ear-ring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. Pr. xxv. 12. Open rebuke is better than secret love. Pr. xxvii. 5. So the ship-master came to him (Jonah), and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not. Jon. i. 6. As many as I love (saith the Lord), I rebuke and chasten. Re. iii. 19.

17 all other: thus she was reproved. So Abraham prayed unto God: and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; 18 and they bare children. For the Lord had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.

CHAPTER XXI.

1 AND the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did 2 unto Sarah as he had spoken. For Sarah conceived, and bare up her (Hannah's) womb. 1 Sa. i. 6. Therefore they (the people of Ashdod) sent the ark of God to Ekron; and it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people. 1 Sa. v. 10.

17 Prayed unto God.] Now therefore restere the man his wife (said God in a dream to Abimelech), for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee. Ge. xx. 7. And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated (by Jacob), he opened her womb. Ge. xxix. 31. So "they" ("the Ekronites") sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not and our people; for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city: the hand of God was very heavy there, and the men that died not were smitten with the emerods, and the cry of the city went up to heaven. 1 Sa. v. 11, 12. And that which they have need of (for the advancement of the building of the House of God) let it be given them day by day, without fail (said Darius), that they may offer sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king and of his sons. Ezra vi. 9, 10. The Lord also accepted Job, and the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends. Job xlii. 9, 10. The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is his delight: the Lord is far from the wicked, but he heareth the prayer of the righteous. Pr. xv. 8. 29. Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. Is.xlv. 11. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find. Mat. vii. 7. Whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Mat. xxi. 22. Yea, and all the prophets from Samuel, and those that follow after, as many as have spoken, have likewise foretold of these days. Ac. iii. 24. In every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. Phi. iv. 6. Brethren, pray 1 Th. v. 25. Pray one for another, ye may be healed. Jam. v. 6. 18 Fast closed up all the wombs.] See verse 7; chap. xii. 17. and com. Behold now the Lord hath restrained me from bearing (said Sarai). Ge. xvi. 2. CHAP. XXI.-1 Visited Sarah.] And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die and God will surely visit you. Ge. 1. 24. The Lord God of your fathers appeared unto me (Moses), saying, I have surely visited you. Ex. iii. 16. And when " they" ("the Israelites") heard that the Lord had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped. Ex. iv. 31. I, the Lord thy God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me. Ex. xx. 5. For "she" ("Naomi") had heard in the country of Moab, how that the Lord had visited his people in giving them bread. Ru. i. 6. And the Lord visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. 1 Sa. ii. 21. O visit me with thy salvation. Ps. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for visited and redeemed his people. La And they shall not leave in thee (Jerusalem) one stone upon another, because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. Lu. xix. 44. As it is written, I have made "thee" (“Abraham") a father of many nations. "He" ("Abraham") was strong in faith, giving glory to God. Ro. iv. 17. 20.

As he had spoken.] Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son. Ge. xvii. 19. See chap. xviii. 10. 14. The words of the Lord are pure words, as silver tried in a furnace of earth purified seven times. Ps. xii. 6. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away. Mat. xxiv. 35. He of the freewoman toas by promise; now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. Ga. iv. 23. 28. (Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ) in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; to Titus mine own son after the common faith. Tit. i. 1, 2. 4.

2 Sarah conceived.] And he (Elisha) said, About this season, according to the time of life,

Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. And Abraham called the name of his son that 3 was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. And Abraham 4 circumcised his son Isaac, being eight days old, as God had commanded him. And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his 5 son Isaac was born unto him. And Sarah said, God hath made 6 me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. And she 7

thou shalt embrace a son; and the woman (the Shunammite) conceived and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her. 2 Ki. iv. 16, 17. And after those days his (Zacharias') wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. Lu. i. 24, 25. And behold thy cousin Elizabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age. Lu. i. 36. And he gave "him" ("Abraham") the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Ac. vii. 8. For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. Ga. iv. 22. Through faith Sara herself received strength to conceive seed. He. xi. 11. At the set time.] See chap. xvii. 19. 21. and com. and xviii. 10. and com. For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son. Ro. ix. 9.

3 Called the name of his son.] See verses 6. 12. and chap. xvii. 19. and com. And he (the Lord) said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. Ge. xxii. 2. And I (the Lord), took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and gave him Isaac. Jos. xxiv. 3. And Abraham begat Isaac, &c. Mat. i. 2. Ac. vii. 8. In Isaac shall thy seed be called. Ro. ix. 7. He. xi. 18.

4 Being eight days old.] See chap. xvii. 10. 12. and com. And in the eighth day the flesh of his (every man child's) foreskin shall be circumcised. Le. xii. 3. What thing soever I command you, observe to do it; thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it. De. xii. 32. And they (Zacharias and Elizabeth) were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called his name Zacharias, after the name of his father: and his mother answered and said, Not so, but he shall be called John. Lu. i. 6. 59, 60. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called Jesus. Lu. ii. 21. Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers); and ye on the sabbath-day circumcise a man. If a man on the sabbath-day receive circumcision,

that the law of Moses should not be broken, are ye angry at me (said Jesus), because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath-day? Jn. vii. 22, 23.

5 An hundred years old.] See chap. xvii. 1. 17. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old. Ro. iv. 19.

6 God hath made me to laugh.] See chap. xvii. 17. and com, and xviii. 12. Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid: and he (the Lord) said, Nay, but thou didst laugh. Ge. xviii. 15. And they (Elkanah and Hannah) brought the child to Eli, and she (Hannah) said, Oh, my lord, as thy soul liveth, my "lord" (“Eli”), I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the Lord. Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. 1 Sa. i. 26. 28. And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, mine horn is exalted in the Lord, my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies, because I rejoice in thy salvation. The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken in pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth, and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed. 1 Sa. ii. 1. 10. He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of children. Ps. cxiii. 9. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing; then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. Ps. cxxvi. 2. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Then shalt thou (the Church of Christ) say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these, seeing I have lost my children (the Jews), and I am desolate, a captive, and removing to and fro? Behold, I was left alone; "these” (“Gentiles"), where had they been? Is. xlix. 15. 21. Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate, than the children of the married wife, saith the Lord. Is. liv. 1. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour, &c.; he hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed, for ever. Lu. i. 46, 47–55. A woman, when she is in

said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age. 8 And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great 9 feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham,

travail, hath sorrow, because her hour is come; but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And ye now therefore have sorrow; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you. Jn. xvi. 21, 22. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. Ga. iv. 27, 28.

Will laugh with me.] And thou shalt have joy and gladness, and many shall rejoice at his birth (said the angel to Elizabeth): and her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her, and they rejoiced. Lu. i. 14. 58. Rejoice with them that do rejoice. Ro. xii. 15. 7 Who would have said, &c.] Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought? Nu. xxiii. 23. For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it? or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the Lord your God did for you? De. iv. 32. 34. Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works for thou art great, and doest wondrous things; thou art God alone. Ps. lxxxvi. 8. 10. Then shalt thou (the church) say in thine heart, Who hath begotten me these (Gentiles), seeing I have lost my children (the Jews)? Behold, I was left alone; these, where had they been? Is. xlix. 21. Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day, or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children. Is. lxvi. 8. Ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God, which is given me to you-ward: how that by revelation he (God) made known unto "me" ("Paul") the mystery of Christ, to the intent, that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God. 8 And was weaned, &c.] But Hannah went not up (to offer the yearly sacrifice), for she said unto her “husband” (“Elkanah”), I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that “he” (“Samuel”) may appear before the Lord, and there abide for

ever.

1 Sa. i. 22. Surely I have behaved and quieted myself as a child that is weaned of his mother; my soul is even as a weaned child. Ps. cxxxi. 2. Now when she had weaned Lo-ruhamah, "she" ("Gomer," the wife of Hosea) conceived, and bare a son. Ho. i. 8.

A great feast, &c.] See chap. xix. 3. and And he (Isaac) made "them” (“Abimelech and his friends") a feast, and they did eat and drink. Ge. xxvi. 30. And Laban gathered together all the men of the "place" (“Haran"), and made a feast (for Jacob). Ge. xxix. 22. And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birth-day, that he made a feast unto all his servants. Ge. xl. 20. So his father (Manoah) went down unto the woman, and Samson made there a feast, for so used the young men to do: and Samson said, I will now put forth a riddle unto you; if ye can certainly declare it unto me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets, and thirty change of garments. Ju. xiv. 10. 12. And Abigail came to Nabal, and behold he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. 1 Sa. xxv. 36. So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him, and David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast. 2 Sa. iii. 20. And Solomon came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants. 1 Ki. iii. 15. In the third year of his (king Ahasuerus') reign, he made a feast unto all his princes and his servants. Es. i. 3.

9 And Sarah saw, &c.] See chap. xvi. 3. 6. 15. and xvii. 20.

Egyptian.] Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bare him no children, and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar; and Hagar bare Abram a son, and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. Ge. xvi. 1. 15.

mocking. Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bond- 10 woman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be

heir with my son, even with Isaac. And the thing was very 11 grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. And God said 12

Mocking.] And he (Elisha) went up from thence unto Beth-el, and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head, go up, thou bald head. 2 Ki. ii. 23. So the posts (sent by Hezekiah) passed from city to city (warning the people to turn unto the Lord) through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, even unto Zebulun; but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them. 2 Ch. xxx. 10. But " they" ("the inhabitants of Jerusalem") mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused his prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, till there was no remedy. 2 Ch. xxxvi. 16. But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews: and cover not their iniquity (0 our God), and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee; for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. Ne. iv. 1. 5. But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flocks. Job xxx. 1. But I am a worm and no man, a reproach of men, and despised of the people. Ps. xxii. 6. As with a sword in my bones mine enemies reproach me, while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Ps. xlii. 10. Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us; thou makest us a by-word among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. Ps. xliv. 13, 14. Even a child is known by his doings whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. Pr. xx. 11. The adversaries saw her (Jerusalem), and did mock at her sabbaths. La. i. 7. It is written that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman; but as then, he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the spirit, even so it is now. Ga. iv. 22. 29. And others (excellent persons of old times) had trials of cruel mockings, &c. He. xi. 36.

10 Cast out this bondwoman, &c.] But unto the sons of the concubines which Abraham had, Abraham gave gifts, and sent them away from Isaac his son. Ge. xxv. 6. I will establish my covenant with "him" ("Isaac") for an everlasting covenant. Ge. xvii. 19. 21. See Ge. xx. 11. And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. Ge. xxii. 10. And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan, and went into the

country, from the face of his brother Jacob: for their riches were more than that they might dwell together. Ge. xxxvi. 6,7. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. viii. 12. Then said the king to his servants, Bind him (that had not a wedding garment) hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat. xxii. 13. The servant abideth not in the house for ever, but the Son abideth ever. Jn. viii. 35. Nevertheless, what saith the Scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman: so then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Stand fast, therefore, in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Ga. iv. 30, 31. and v. 1. And they (seducers) went out from us, but they were not of us: for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us; but they went out, that they might be made manifest, that they were not all of us. 1 Jn. ii. 19.

Heir with my son.] For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise. Ga. iii. 18. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Ga. iv. 7. (Christ hath begotten us) to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you. 1 Pe. i. 4. See Jn. viii. 25. and 1 Jn. ii. 19. preced. com.

11 Because of his son.] And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! Ge. xvii. 18. and com. And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham; and he said, Here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt-offering, upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. Ge. xxii. 1, 2. And the king (David) was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, thus he said, O my son, Absalom! my son, my son, Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son! 2 Sa. xviii. 33. He that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Mat. x. 37. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. He. xii. 11.
