20 begat Isaac: And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the 21 sister to Laban the Syrian. And Isaac intreated the Lord for his

wife, because she was barren: and the Lord was intreated of him, 22 and Rebekah his wife conceived. And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? 23 And she went to enquire of the Lord. And the Lord said unto

The Syrian of Padan-aram.] And Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. Ge. xxiv. 29. And Isaac sent away Jacob, and he went to Padan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother. When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padan-aram, to take him a wife from thence, &c. then went Esau unto Ishmael, &c. Ge. xxviii. 5, 6. 9. And he (Jacob) carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father, in the land of Canaan. And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob good or bad. Ge. xxxi. 18. 20. 24. And God appeared unto Jacob again when he came out of Padan-aram, and blessed him. Ge. xxxv. 9. And thou (who offerest thy basket of first fruits) shalt speak and say before the Lord thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous. De. xxvi. 5.

Many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet, and none of them was cleansed saving Naaman the Syrian. Lu. iv. 27.

21 Intreated the Lord, &c.] And she (Hannah) vowed a vow and said, O Lord of Hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. For this "child" ("Samuel") I prayed, and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him. 1 Sa. i. 11. 27. And call upon me in the day of trouble (saith the Lord): I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Ps. 1. 15. O thou that hearest prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. Ps. lxv. 2. He (who hath set his love upon me, saith the Lord) shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. Ps. xci. 15. Thus saith the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning

my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. Is. xlv. 11. Then shalt “thou” call (“when free from hypocrisy"), and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt erv, and he shall say, Here I am. Is. lviii. 9. And it shall come to pass, that before they (of the new Jerusalem) call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear. Is. lxv. 24. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. Lu. i. 13.

Because she was barren.] But Sarai was barren; she had no child. Ge. xi. 30. with com. and also Ge. xvii. 16. 19. with com.

And the Lord was intreated.] And they (the sons of Reuben, &c.) were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them (Jetur, Nephish, and Nodab); for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them, because they put their trust in him. 1 Ch. v. 20. And when "he" (“Manasseh”) was in afflic tion, he prayed unto "him" ("the Lord"), and he was intreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. 2 Ch. xxxiii. 12, 13. So we fasted and besought our God for "this" ("for help against our enemies”), and he was intreated of us. Ezr. viii. 23. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear "him" ("the Lord"). He also will hear their cry, and will save them. Ps. cxlv. 19. The fear of the wicked shall come upon him; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted. Pr. x. 24.

And Rebekah his wife conceived.] And not only this (promise to Sarah), but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac, it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. Ro. ix. 10. 12.

22 Enquire of the Lord.] Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer; for he that is now called a prophet was beforetime called a seer. 1 Sa. ix. 9. Therefore (as they, the people of Israel, could not find Saul the son of Kish) they enquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither? And the Lord answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff. 1 Sa. x. 22. Did I (Abr melech) then begin to enquire of God for him (David)? And when Saul (seeing the host of the Philistines) enquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. 1 Sa. xxviii. 6. And David enquired of the Lord, Shall I pursue after this troop (of the Amalekites)? Shall I overtake them? And he (Abiathar the priest) answered him, Pursue, for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all. 1 Sa. xxx. 8. offer your gifts, when ye make your sons to pass through the fire, ye pollute yourselves with all your idols, even unto this day; and shall I be enquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, saith the Lord God, I will not be enquired of by you. Ez. xx. 31. Thus saith the Lord God, I will yet for "this" ("that the heathen may know that I the Lord build up the ruined places") be enquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock. Ex. xxxvi. 37.

For "they" (" the tabernacles of Edom, the Philistines, Tyre, Gebal, Ammon, Amalek, Assur," &c.) have consulted together with one consent; they are confederate against thee: so persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm. Ps. lxxxiii. 5. 15. The indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and his fury upon all their armies. Is. xxxiv. 2, &c. Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? This, that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth. Is. Ixiii. 1. 6. Concerning Edom thus saith the Lord of hosts, Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished? Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs. Jer. xlix. 7. 22. And I will lay my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel: and they shall do in Edom according to mine anger, and according to my fury; and they shall know my vengeance, saith the Lord God. Ez. xxv. 14. Son of man, set thy face against Mount Seir, &c. Ex. xxxv. 2, &c. Thus saith the Lord, For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the The elder shall serve, &c.] Let people serve sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger "thee" ("Jacob" said Isaac), and nations bow did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath down to thee; be lord over thy brethren, and for ever. Two manner of people.] And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents. Ge. xxv. 27. And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. Ge. xxxii. 6. And he (Jacob) put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost. And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. Ge. xxxiii. 2, 3. And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel. Ge. xxxvi. 31. And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travel that hath befallen us. Nu. xx. 14.

Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac, it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger; as it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. Ro. ix. 9, 10. 12, 13.

25 All over like an hairy, &c.] Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man (said Jacob to his mother); and she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his (Jacob's) hands, and upon the smooth of his neck. And he (Isaac his father) discerned him not, because his hands were hairy. Ge. xxvii. 11. 16. 23.

26 After that came his brother.] And it came to pass when she travailed, that the one ("child") put out his hand, and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first; and afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand, and his name was called Zarah, his brother was Pharez (both born of Tamar by Judah). Ge. xxxviii. 28. 30. Took hold on Esau's heel.] He (Jacob) took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God. Ho. xii. 3.

Jacob.] And he (Esau) said, Is he not rightly named "Jacob?" for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright, and now, behold, he hath taken away my blessing. Ge. xxvii. 36.

Was threescore years old.] And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife.

Ge. xxv. 20.

27 A cunning hunter.] He (Nimrod) was a mighty hunter before the Lord. Ge. x. 9. and com. And God was with the "lad" (“Ishmael”), and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. Ge. xxi. 20. Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison. And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son: and Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it. Ge. xxvii. 3. 5.

A plain man, &c.] Noah was a just man, and walked with God. Ge. vi. 9. And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran, and he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun

was set, and he took of the stones of that place and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. Ge. xxviii. 10, 11. That which was torn of beasts (said Jacob to Laban) I brought not unto thee: I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. Thus have I been twenty years in thy house: I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle, and thou hast changed my wages ten times. Ge. xxxi. 39.

41.

"Ye" ("Joseph's brethren") shall say (to Pharaoh), Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we and also our fathers. Ge. xlvi. 34 There is none like "him" ("Job," saith the Lord), a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil. Job i. 1. 8. Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace. Ps. xxxvii. 37.

Dwelling in tents.] By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. He. xi. 9.

28 He did eat of his venison.] Make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat (said Isaac to Esau). And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy first born; I have done according as thou badest me: I pray thee sit and eat of my venison. And he said, Bring it near unto me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee: and he (Esau) also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me. Ge. xxvii. 4. 19. 25. 31.

But Rebekah loved Jacob.] Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, &c. Ge. xxvii. 6.

29 And he was faint.] And Gideon came to Jordan, and passed over, he and the three hundred men that were with him, faint, yet pursuing them. And he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread unto the people that follow; for they be faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Żalmunas,

same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. 31 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit 32 shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this 33 day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and 34 he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

kings of Midian. Ju. viii. 4, 5. Then answered one of the people, and said (to Jonathan), Thy father (Saul), straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint. And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon, and the people were very faint. 1 Sa. xiv. 28. 31. The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul, but the belly of the wicked shall want. Pr. xiii. 25. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall; but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Is. xl. 30, 31.

30 Edom.] Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites; these are the names of Esau's sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau. Duke Aholibamah, Elah, Pinon, Kenaz, Teman, Mihzar, Magdiel, Iram: these be the dukes of Edom. Ge. xxxvi. 1. 9, 10. 41, 42, 43. Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed (said Moses in his song of deliverance). Ex. xv. 15. And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom; thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: wherefore Israel turned away from him. Nu. xx. 14. 21. Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother. De. xxiii. 7. In "his" (king "Jehoram's") days, Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah, and made a king over themselves. 2 Ki. viii. 20.

32 And what profit, &c.] What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have if we pray unto him? Job xxi. 15. (The wicked) which said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. Job xxxiv. 9. Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts? Mal. iii. 14.

Birthright.] Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors; the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto Ex. xxii. 29.

33 Swear to me.] And Abraham said to

the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the Lord, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth. Ge. xiv. 22. I will make thee swear by the Lord (said Abraham to his servant), &c. Ge. xxiv. 3. And he (Herod) sware unto her (the daughter of Herodias), Ask of me whatsoever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. Mar. vi. 22, 23. Men verily swear by the greater; and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. He. vi. 16.

And he sold his birthright.] Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he has taken away my blessing. Ge. xxvii. 36. And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob. For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle. Ge. xxxvi. 6, 7. Follow peace with all men, looking diligently lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. He. xii. 6.

34 Eat and drink.] Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry. Ec. viii. 15. And behold, joy and gladness, slaying oxen, eating flesh, and drinking wine. Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we shall die. And it was revealed in mine ears by the Lord of hosts; Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord God of hosts. Isa. xxii. 13, 14. If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me if the dead arise not? Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die. 1 Co. xv. 32.

Thus Esau despised, &c.] Yea, they despised the pleasant land; they believed not his word. Ps. cvi. 24. And the Lord said unto me, Cast "it" ("my price") unto the potter; and I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter, in the house of the Lord. Zec. xi. 13. But they made light of "it" ("the invitation to the marriage feast"), and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandize. Mat. xxii. 5. What
