5 Obeyed my voice, &c.] See chap. xii. 4.; xvii. 23. with com. Because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because thou hast obeyed my voice. Ge. xxii. 16. 18. and com. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth; the generation of the upright shall be blessed. Ps. cxii. 1. 2. Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord, that walketh in his ways. Ps. cxxviii. 1. &c. Whosoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Mat. v. 19. Whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock. Mat. vii. 24. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Co. xv. 58. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but faith which worketh by Ga. v. 6. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed. He. xi. 8. Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? Ja. ii. 22.

7 She is my sister.] See chap. xii. 13. and The fear of man bringeth a snare, but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. Pr. xxxix. 25. Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul; but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Mat. x. 28. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the Church, and gave himself for it. Ep. v. 25. Lie not one to another. Col. iii. 9.

8 At a window.] The mother of Sisera looked out at a window (expecting her son who was killed by Jael in the tent), and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long coming? Why tarry the wheels of his chariots? Ju. v. 28. For at the window of my house I looked through my casement. Pr. vii. 6. My beloved" ("the Church of Christ") is like a roe, or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall; he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice. Can. ii. 9.

Sporting with Rebekah, &c.] Let thy fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe. Let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. Pr. v. 18, 19. Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity. Ec. ix. 9. As a young man marrieth a virgin, shall thy sons marry "thee" ("the Church"); and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. Is. lxii. 5.

10 What is this thou hast done?] See chap. xii. 18, 19. and com. And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this thing? Ge. xx. 10.

11 Toucheth this man or his wife, &c.] And God said unto him (Abimelech), in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart, for I also withheld thee from sinning against me, therefore suffered I thee not to touch “her” (“ Sarah"). Ge. xx. 6. Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm. Ps. cv. 15. He that goeth in to his neighbour's wife, whosoever toucheth her, shall not be innocent. Pr. vi. 29. He that toucheth "you" ("Jerusalem"), toucheth the apple of his eye. Ze. ii. 8.

12 An hundredfold, &c.] Then shall the earth yield her increase, and God, even our own God, shall bless us. Ps. lxvii. 6. There shall be an handful of corn in the earth, upon the top of the mountains. The fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon; and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth. Ps. lxxii. 16. In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand; for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good. Ec. xi. 6. The seed (alluding to the restoration of Jerusalem) shall be prosperous; the vine shall give her fruit, and the ground shall give her increase. Zec. viii. 12. Other (seed) fell on good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundred-fold, some sixtyfold, some thirty-fold. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word and understandeth it, which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundred-fold, some sixty, some thirty. Mat. xiii. 8. 23. Mar. iv. 8. I have planted (said Paul), Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 1 Co. iii. 6. Now he that ministereth seed to the sower, both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness. Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth, through us, thanksgiving to God. 2 Co. ix. 10, 11. Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap; for he that soweth to his flesh, shall of the flesh reap cor

ruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit, shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Ga. vi. 7, 8.

Blessed him.] See verse 3. Thou art now blessed of the Lord. Ge. xxvi. 29 See chap, xxiv. 1. 35. and com. The Lord hath blessed thee (Laban), since my coming: and now when shall I provide for my house also! Ge. xxx. 30. So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning. (Jab xlii. 12.

13 And the man waxed great, &c.] See chap. xxiv. 35. and com. Wealth and riches shall be in his house, and his righteousness endureth for ever. Ps. cxii. 3.

14 Possession of flocks.] See chap. xii. 16. and com. and Ps. cxii. 3. preced. com. The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich. Pr. x. 22.

Envied him.] And his brethren (Joseph's) envied him. Ge. xxxvii. 11. And Saul eyed David from that day forward (that the womes praised him). 1 Sa. xviii. 9. Wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one. Job v. 2. The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish. Ps. cxii. 10. Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy? Pr. xxvii. 4. Again I considered all travel and every right work, for this a man is envied of his neighbour. is also vanity and vexation of spirit. Ec iv. 4.

This

15 His father's servants had digged.] And he (Abraham) said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou (Abimelech) take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well. Ge. xxi. 30.

16 Mightier than we.] And "he" ("the new king of Egypt") said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. Er. i. 9. 18 In the days of Abraham, &c.] Ste

Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them. And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, 19 and found there a well of springing water. And the herdmen of 20 Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. And they digged another well, and strove for that 21 also: and he called the name of it Sitnah. And he removed from 22 thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land. And he went up from thence to Beer-sheba. And the Lord ap- 23 peared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abra- 24 ham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee,

And he called their names, &c.] See chap. xxi. 31. and com. And Nebo and Baal-meon (their names being changed) (were built by the children of Reuben), and (the children of Reuben) gave other names unto the cities which they builded. Nu. xxxii. 38. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another God. Their drinkofferings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. Ps. xvi. 4. I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth (Jerusalem's), and they shall no more be remembered by their name. Ho. ii. 17. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered. Zec. xiii. 2.

19 Springing water.] A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon. Can. iv. 15. Jesus answered, and said unto her (the woman of Samaria), If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep; from whence hast thou that living water? John iv. 10, 11. He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. John vii. 38.

22 The Lord hath made room.] Thou (0 God) hast enlarged me when I was in distress. Ps. iv. 1. He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. Ps. xviii. 19. I called upon the Lord in distress; the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place. Ps. cxviii. 5.

Be fruitful in the land.] And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of "thee" (" Abram”). Ge. xvii. 6. and com. And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee (said Isaac to Jacob) fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people. Ge. xxviii. 3. And the name of

the second (son) called he Ephraim: for God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction (said Joseph). Ge. xli. 52. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty, and the land was filled with them. Ex. i. 7.

24 I am the God, &c.] See chap. xv. 1. and com. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee, and thy seed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. Ge. xvii. 7. O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee send me " (“his servant") good speed this day, and shew kindness unto my master. Ge. xxiv. 12. And behold, the Lord stood above "it" (the "ladder" in Jacob's vision), and said, I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father. Ge. xxviii. 13. I see (said Jacob to his wives) your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me. Ge. xxxi. 5. Moreover, he said (to Moses), I am the God of Abraham, &c. Ex. iii. 6. I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob: God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Mat. xxii. 32. I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, &c. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. Ac. vii. 32. Fear not, &c.] See verse 3, 4. and com. See chap. xiii. 16. and com. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid? Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear : though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. Ps. xxvii. 1. 3. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea. xlvi. 1, 2. Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song: he

25 and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake. And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well. 26 Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his 27 friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army. And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye hate me, and have 28 sent me away from you? And they said, We saw certainly that the Lord was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant

also is become my salvation. Is. xii. 2. Fear thou not (O Church of Christ); for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee: fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel, &c. Is. xli. 10. 13, 14. O Jacob, O Israel, fear not, for I have redeemed thee; I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine: when thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burnt; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings. I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass? Is. li. 7. 12. Fear not, little flock: for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Lu. xii. 32. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. Called upon the name of the Lord.] I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord. Ps. cxvi. 17.

26 Abimelech went, &c.] God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife. Ge. xx. 3. And it came to pass, that Abimelech, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest. Thus they made a covenant at Beer-sheba; then Abimelech arose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they

returned into the land of the Philistines. Ge. xxi. 22. 32.

27 Seeing ye hate me.] See verse xiv. 16. And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress? Ju. xi. 7. And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; but God was with him. Then sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls: so Jacob went down into Egypt. Ac. vii. 9. 14. 15. He that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made "thee" ("Moses") a ruler and a judge over us? This Moses, whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and deliverer by the hands of the angel which appeared to him in the bush. Ac. vii. 27. 35. Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. Re. iii. 9.

Sent me away.] See verse 16.

28 Was with thee.] See chap. xxi. 22, 23. with com. And it came to pass from the time that he (Potiphar) had made “him” (“Joseph”) overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house and in the field. Ge. xxxix. 5. The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee, and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet, and they shall call thee the city of the Lord, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel. Is. lx. 14. But ye shall be named the priests of the Lord; men shall call you the ministers of our God; ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves: and their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people; all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed. Is. lxi. 6. 9.

Let there be now an oath.] See chap. xxi. 31, 32. and com. and chap. xxiv. 3. 41. and com. This heap is a witness (said Laban to Jacob) between me and thee this day: therefore was

with thee; That thou wilt do us no hurt, as we have not touched 29 thee, and as we have done unto thee nothing but good, and have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the Lord. And he made them a feast, and they did eat and drink. And they 30 rose up betimes in the morning, and sware one to another: and 31 Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace. And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and 32 told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water. And he called it Shebah: there- 33 fore the name of the city is Beer-sheba unto this day. And Esau 34 was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of

the name of it called Galeed and Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch between me and thee when we are absent one from another: the God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us; and Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac. Ge. xxxi. 48, 49. 53. For men verily swear by the greater; and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife. He. vi. 16. 29 Not touched thee, &c.] 15.

The blessed of the Lord.] See verse 12. and chap. xii. 2; xxi. 22; xxiv. 31. with com. Ye are blessed of the Lord, which made heaven and earth. Ps. cxv. 15.

30 Made them a feast, &c.] See chap. xix. 3. and com. and xxi. 8. and com. Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread, and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. Ge. xxxi. 54. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Ro. xii. 18. Follow peace with all men. He. xii. 14. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. 1 Pe. iv. 9.

31 Betimes in the morning.] See chap. xix. 2. and xxi. 14. and com. And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them; and Laban departed, and returned unto his place. Ge. xxxi. 55.

Sware one to another.] See chap. xiv. 22. Ge. xxi. 23. 31, 32. Ge. xxv. 33. with com. And the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. 1 Sa. xiv. 24. And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death so Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies; and Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul. 1 Sa. xx. 3. 16, 17. And David said to "him" (“ the Egyptian servant"

of the Amalekite), Canst thou bring me down to this company? and he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to "this company" ("the Amalekites”). 1 Sa. xxx. 15. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of strife. He. vi. 16.

32 We have found water.] See verse 25. If thou seekest her (wisdom) as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures, then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. Pr. ii. 4, 5. He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. Pr. x. 4. The soul of the sluggard desireth and hath nothing, but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. Pr. xiii. 4. Seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. Mat. vii. 7.

33 Therefore the name, &c.] See chap. xxi. 31. and com.

34 Esau was forty years old, &c.] Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan ; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite: and Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah; these are the sons of Esau which were born unto him in the land of Canaan: and these are the sons of "Reuel" ("the son" of Bashemath by Esau), Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah; these were the sons of Bashemath Esau's wife. Ge. xxxvi. 2. 5. 13.

The daughter of Beeri, &c.] And I will make thee swear by the Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell. Ge. xxiv. 3. and com. Thou shalt worship no other God, lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and thou take of their daughters unto thy sons. Ex. xxxiv. 14, 15, 16. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Co. vii. 2. Follow peace with all men, looking diligently, lest there be any fornicator or profane person, as Esau. He. xii. 14, 15.
