Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and 8 herds, and the camels, into two bands; And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is 9 left shall escape. And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham,

come and smite me, and the mother with the children. Ge. xxxii. 8. 11. By thy sword shalt thou (Esau) live, and shalt serve thy brother. Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. Ge. xxvii. 40, 41. And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. Ge. xxxiii. 1. The day of the Lord is darkness, and not light. As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. Am. v. 19.

7 Greatly afraid.] And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid. Ex. xiv. 10. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about the snares of death prevented me. Ps. xviii. 4, 5. For I have heard the slander of many fear was on every side: while they took counsel together against me, they devised to take away my life. Ps. xxxi. 13. My heart is sore pained within me; and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. Ps. lv. 4. Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me. Ps. lv. 5. "He" ("the Lord") only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

Ps. lxii. 2. I looked

on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul. Ps. cxlii. 4. And he (Jesus) saith unto "them" ("his disciples"), Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Mat. viii. 26. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33. We must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac. xiv. 22. Blessed be God, who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life. 2 Co. i. 4. 8. We had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God, who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us. 2 Co. i. 10. Yea, and all that will

live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Ti. iii. 12.

Distressed.] "I" ("Jacob") will make "there" (at Bethel") an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress. Ge. xxxv. 3. They (Israel) cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distress. Ps. cvii. 6.

And he divided the people.] A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Ps. cxii. 5. Dis cretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee. Pr. ii. 11. For his God doth instruct him (the plowman) to discretion, and doth teach him. Is. xxviii. 26. Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves. Be ye, therefore, wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Mat. x. 16.

8 If Esau come, &c.] And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids. And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. Ge. xxxiii. 1. 3. See preced. com.

9 Jacob said.] And David was greatly distressed for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters; but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. 1 Sa. xxx. 6. and (Jehoshaphat) said, O Lord God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? And rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee! 2 Ch. xx. 6. O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. 2 Ch. xx. 12. For "this causE ("the invasion of Judah by Sennacherib, king of Assyria") Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven. 2 Ch. xxxii. 20. I sought the Lord and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. This poor man cried, and the Lord, heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. Ps. xxxiv. 4. 6. with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Phi. iv. 6, 7.

10 I am not worthy.] See chap. xviii. 27. Then went king David in, and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto? 2 Sa. vii. 18. I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now mine eye seeth thee; wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes, Job xlii. 5, 6. O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee. Ps. xvi. 2. Then said "I" ("Isaiah"), Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. Is. vi. 5. I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses. And "I" ("Paul") thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was

exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Ti. i. 12, 13, 14, 15. Be clothed with humility; for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 1 Pe. v. 5. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him (God) a liar, and his word is not in us. '1 John i. 8, 9, 10.

Mercies.] And "he" (" Abraham's servant") said, Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth. Ge. xxiv. 27. "Thou" ("God") hast made "him" ("man") a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Ps. viii. 5.

Truth.] See chap. xxiv. 27. preced. com. I will not leave thee (said the Lord to Jacob) until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of. Ge. xxviii. 15. He (the king) shall abide before God for ever: O prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him. Ps. lxi. 7. Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Ps. lxxxv. 10. Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old. Mi. vii. 20.

My staff.] And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran; and he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set. And he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. Ge. xxviii. 10, 11. Though thy beginning (of him who is pure and upright) was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase. Job viii. 7. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. Ps. xviii. 35.

Two bands.] See verse 5. 7. And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maidservants, and menservants, and camels, and asses. Ge. xxx. 43. Thou shalt remember the Lord thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth. De. viii. 18. Thy right hand hath holden me up; thy gentleness hath made me great. Ps. xviii. 35. They (whose strength is in God) go from

11 Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and 12 the mother with the children. strength to strength. Ps. lxxxiv. 7. The righteous also shall hold on his way; and he that hath clean hands shall be stronger and stronger. Job xvii. 9. The path of the just is as the shining light, which shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Pr. iv. 18.

11 Deliver me.] And they (the Israelites, said Samuel unto all Israel) cried unto the Lord, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, and we will serve thee. 1 Sa. xii. 10. The Lord therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee (said David to Saul), and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. 1 Sa. xxiv. 15. Preserve me, O God, for in thee do I put my trust. Ps. xvi. 1. O keep my soul, and deliver me : let me be not be ashamed, for I put my trust in thee. Ps. xxv. 20. Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for an house of defence to save me. Ps. xxxi. 2. O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. Ps. xliii. 1. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. Ps. lix. 1, 2. Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts. Ps. cxix. 134. Attend unto my cry, for I am brought very low deliver me from my persecutors, O God, for they are stronger than I. Ps. cxlii. 6. A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city and their contentions are like the bars of a castle. Pr. xviii. 19. Our God (said Shadrach, &c.) whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. Da. iii. 17. Deliver us from evil : For thine is the kingdom, &c. Mat. vi. 13.

The mother, &c.] If a bird's nest be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young. De. xxii. 6. Shalman spoiled Beth-arbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children. Ho. x. 14.

12 Thou saidst.] See chap. xxxii. 6. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants (said Moses), to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven. Ex. xxxii. 13. God is not a man, that he

should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Nu. xxiii. 19. Also the Strength of Israel will not lie, nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent. 1 Sa. xv. 29. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. Mat. xxiv. 35. If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself. 2 Ti. ii. 13. Paul, a servant of God, &c. in hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began, to Titus, mine own son after the common faith. Tit. i. 2. God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath. He. vi. 17.

I will surely do thee good.] See chap. xxviii. 13. 15. and com. ; xlvi. 3. 4.

13 That which came to his hand.] Ask thy young men (said David, by his messengers, to Nabal), and they will shew thee (that wer hurt them not). Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes (for we come in a good day): give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David. 1 Sa. xxv. 8.

A present for Esau.] For he (Jacob) said, I will appease "him" (“Esau”) with the present that goeth before me: so went the present over before him. Ge. xxxii. 20, 21; xviii. 2 and com. And Jacob said, Receive my present at my hand, &c. Ge. xxxiii. 10. And Joseph was governor over "the land" (ef "Egypt"), and he it was that sold (corn) to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth. Ge. xlii. 6. And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now (that I send Benjamin with you); take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds. And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth. Ge. xliii. 11. 26. And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord (said Abigail to David). 18. XXV 27. A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth it prospereth. Pr. xvii. 8. A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men. Pr. xviii. 16. 14 Two hundred she-goats.] See Gen. xxx. 43. and xxxi. 9. 16. Thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers. De. viii. 18. There was a man (Nabal) in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats. 1 Sa. xxv. 2. 20 I will appease him, &c.] Take of the best fruits in the land (said Jacob to his sons) in your vessels, and carry down the man a present. Ge. xliii. 11. Now therefore, know and consider what thou wilt do (said one of the young men to Abigail): for evil is determined against our master (Nabal), and against all his household: for he (Nabal) is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him. Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses. And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said, This blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given to the young men that follow my lord. Of me.] Him (Job) will I accept: the Lord also accepted Job. Job xlii. 8, 9. He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts. Pr. vi. 35. 22 His two wives.] And Jacob said (to Laban), Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her; and he (Laban) gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also. And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid; and Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid. Ge. xxix. 21. 24. 28, 29. If any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. 1 Ti. v. 8.

Jabbok.] Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou (Israel) camest not, nor to any place of the river Jabbok. De. ii. 37. And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even to the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon. De. iii. 16.

24 Wrestled, &c.] And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed; and she called "his" ("Bilhah's child's") name Naphtali. Ge. xxx. 8. Strive to enter in at the strait gate for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Lu. xiii. 24. And (Jesus) being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Lu. xxii. 44. Likewise also the Spirit helpeth our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered; and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind

of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Ro. viii. 26, 27. Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me: that I may come unto you with joy by the will of God. Ro. xv. 30. For we wrestle, not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ep. vi. 12. Take the helmet of salvation, &c.; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. Ep. vi. 18. For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh. Col. ii. 1. Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. Col. iv. 12. So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest, who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared. And a man shall

A man. n.] And he (the angel) said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for I have seen God face to face. Ge. xxxii. 28. 30. The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless "the lads" (" Ephraim and Manassek” said Jacob). Ge. xlviii. 16. be as an hiding-place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land. Is. xxxii. 2. He (Jacob) took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God; yea, had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept and made supplication unto him; he found him in Beth-el, and there he spake with us, even the Lord God of hosts; the Lord is his memorial. Ho. xii. 3, 4, 5. The first man is of the earth, earthy; the second man is the Lord from heaven. 1 Co. xv. 47.
