both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of 6 the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison. And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and looked upon them, and, 7 behold, they were sad. And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look 8 ye so sadly to-day? And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray

tude of his bones with strong pain: that he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man. Job xxxiii. 15. 19. 17. And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him; and the king said unto "them" ("the astrologers, and the Chaldæans, and the sorcerers"), I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream, &c. Da. ii. 1. 3. I saw a dream (said Nebuchadnezzar) which made me afraid, and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. O Belteshazzar (said he to Daniel), master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. Then Daniel (whose name was Belteshazzar) was astonied for one hour, and his thoughts troubled him. And (he) said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. Da. iv. 5. 9. 19. See Dan. vii. and viii. throughout.

6 And, behold, they were sad.] We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. Ge. xl. 8. And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dreams; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh. Ge, xli. 8. See Da. ii. 1-3. in com. on " They dreamed a dream," verse 5. Then (when Belshazzar saw the fingers of a man's hand) the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one against another. Da. v. 6. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart. Da. vii. 28. And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it. Da. viii. 27.

7 Wherefore look ye so sadly.] Ye have taken away my gods (said Micah), which I made, and the priest (the young Levite), and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What

aileth thee? Ju. xviii. 24. Then said Elkanah her husband to her (provoked by her adversary Peninnah), Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? 1 Sa. i. 8. And he (Jonadab, son of Shimeah, David's brother,) said unto "him" ("Amnon”), Why art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day? wilt thou not tell me? 2 Sa. xiii. 4. The king said unto "me" (“ Nehemiah"), Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? This is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Ne. ii. 2. And he (Jesus) said unto them" (“two of his disciples"), What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? Lu. xxiv. 17. 8 Do not interpretations, &c.] And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Ge. xli. 15, 16. God speaketh in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed; then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction. Job xxxiii. 15, 16. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. Ps. xxv. 14. And when they say unto you. Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and mutter; should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead? Is. viii. 19. It is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that can shew it before the king except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. There is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets, and maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days. The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret. Da. ii. 11. 28. 47. But at the last Daniel came in before me (Nebuchadnezzar), whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god; and in whom is the spirit of the holy Gods: and before him I told the dream. Da. iv. & There is a man (said the queen to Belshazzar) in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the

you. And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said unto 9 him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; And in the vine 10 were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the 11 grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. And Joseph said unto him, This is the 12 interpretation of it: The three branches are three days: Yet 13 within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler. think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness,

holy gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him. I have even heard of thee, Daniel (said the king), that the Spirit of the Lord is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee; and the wise men could not shew the interpretation of the thing. Da. v. 11. 14. 15. To another (is given) the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: but all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 1 Co. xii. 10, 11. Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. Am. iii. 7.

9 A vine was before me.] See verse 5. under "They dreamed," &c. Thou, O king, sawest, and behold a great image. This great image, whose brightness was excellent, stood before thee; and the form thereof was terrible. Da. ii. 31. But at the last Daniel came in before me, before whom I told the dream, saying, Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed; I saw, and behold a tree in the midst of the earth, and the height thereof was great. Da. iv. 8. 10.

12 This is the interpretation, &c.] There was there (in the prison) with us a young man, an Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, and he interpreted to us our dreams. And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: God hath sheweth Pharaoh what he is about to do. The seven good kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years. The dream is one. Ge. xli. 12. 25, 26. And his fellow answered (him who had the dream of the barley cake, which tumbled into the host of Midian) and said, This (cake) is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian. Ju. vii. 14. Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen, and the interpretation (said Nebuchadnezzar to Daniel)? Da.

But 14

ii. 26. Then Daniel (having heard the king's dream) was astonied for one hour; and his thoughts troubled him. The king spake, and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation thereof, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee; and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies. Da. iv. 19.

The three branches are, &c.] See Ge. xli. 26. and Ju. vii. 14. in preced. com. And as they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. Mat. xxvi. 26. And (our fathers) did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ. 1 Co. x. 4. For Agar is mount Sina in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem, which now is, and is in bondage with her children, &c. Ga. iv. 25.

13 Within three days, &c.] For yet seven days (saith the Lord), and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights. Ge. vii. 4.

Shall Pharaoh, &c.] And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast to all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; but he hanged the chief baker. Ge. xl. 20-22. Evil-merodach, king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, did lift up the head of Jehoiachin, king of Judah, out of prison. 2 Ki. xxv. 27. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory and the lifter up of mine head. Ps. iii. 3. And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, that Evil-merodach, king of Babylon, in the first year of his reign, lifted up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah, and brought him forth out of prison. Je. lii. 31.

14 Think on me, &c.] When the Lord shall have dealt well with my lord (said Abigail to David), then remember thine handmaid. 1 Sa. xxv. 31. And "he" (the "thief" on the cross) said unto Jesus, Remember me

I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and 15 bring me out of this house: For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that 16 they should put me into the dungeon. When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head: 17 And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bake-meats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon 18 my head. And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpreta19 tion thereof: The three baskets are three days: Yet within three

when thou comest into thy kingdom. Lu. xxiii. 42. Art thou called being a servant ? care not for it; but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather. 1 Co. vii. 21.

Shew kindness.] Now, therefore, I pray "you" (said Rahab to the "spies on Jericho,") swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token. Jos. ii. 12. And thou (said Jonathan to David) shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, that I die not but also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever; no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth. 1 Sa. xx. 14, 15. And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake? 2 Sa. ix. 1. Shew kindness (said David to Solomon) unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother. 1 Ki. ii. 7.

15 Stolen away, &c.] There passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Ge. xxxvii. 28. He that stealeth a man and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. Ex. xxi. 16. If a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die. De. xxiv. 7. The law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient; for men-stealers, for liars, for perjured persons, &c. 1 Ti. i. 10.

The Hebrews.] See chap. xiv. 13. with com. Done nothing, &c.] But "he" ("Joseph," when his master's wife cast her eyes upon him) refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and filed, and got him out. And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison,

Ge. xxxix. 8, 9. 12. 20. My father, see (said David to Saul); yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand; for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. 1 Sa. xxiv. 11. For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord.

They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold. Ps. lix. 3, 4. My God hath sent his angel; and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I (Daniel) done no hurt. They hated me without a cause. John xv. 25. They neither found me (says Paul) in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. Let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council, except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day. Ac. xxiv. 12, 13. 20, 21. Then said Paul, I stand at Cæsar's judgment-seat, where I ought to be judged. To the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest; for if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things, whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. Ac. xxv. 10, 11. It is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing than for evil doing. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. | Pe. iii. 17, 18.

Hang thee on a tree.] He (Pharaoh) hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted. Ge. xl. 22. And it came to pass, as he interpreted to us so it was; "me" (the “butler") he restored unto mine office, and him (the baker) he hanged. Ge. xli. 13. If a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him upon a tree; his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in anywise bury him that day (for he that is hanged is accursed of God). De. xxi. 22, 23. The king of Ai “he” (“Joshua") hanged on a tree until eventide and as soon as the sun was down Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, &c. Jos. viii. 29. And afterward Joshua smote them (the five kings), and slew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening. Jos. x. 26. And the birds shall eat.] See verse 17. And the Philistine (Goliath) said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. Then said David to the Philistine, This day will the Lord deliver thee into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth. 1 Sa. xvii. 44. 46. And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah (whom she bare unto Saul) took sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on "them" ("the kindred of Saul" that were hanged in the hill, seven in number) by day, nor the beasts of the field by night. 2 Sa. xxi. 10. "Thou" ("Gog," the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal) shalt fall upon

the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. Ez. xxxix. 4. I have not shunned to declare unto you (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus) all the counsel of God. Ac. xx. 27.

Lifted up the head, &c.] See verses 13. 19. and com. Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. forasmuch as he had not to pay, his Lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. Mat. xviii. 23, 24, 25. long time the Lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. Mat. xxv. 19. There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that he had wasted his goods. And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. Lu. xvi. 1, 2.

And

21 Gave the cup, &c.] See verse 13. it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence, &c. Ne. ii. 1.

22 He hanged, &c.] See verses 18, 19. We dreamed each man according to the interpretation of his dream. And it came to pass, as he (Joseph) interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, and him he hanged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph,

23 as Joseph had interpreted to them. Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.

CHAPTER XLI.

1 AND it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh 2 dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well favoured kine and fatfleshed;

and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon and Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it and Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. Ge. xli. 11. 13-16. The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream: and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the Lord. Je. xxiii. 28. Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; I thank thee and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers (said Daniel), who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee; for thou hast now made known unto us the king's matter; but as for me, this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more than any living, but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king, and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart. Da. ii. 19. 23. 30. Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation (said the queen to Belshazzar). Da. v. 12. I have not shunned to declare unto you (said Paul to the elders of Ephesus) all the counsel of God. Ac. xx. 27.

23 But forgat him.] My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten

me.

Job xix. 14. I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind; I am like a broken vessel. Ps. xxxi. 12. Until the time that his word came; the word of the Lord tried him. Ps. cv. 19. Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that poor man : then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. Ec. ix. 15, 16. (The people of Israel) that drink wine in bowls, and anoint themselves with the chief ointments; but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph. Am. vi. 6.

CHAP. XLI.-1 That Pharaoh dreamed.] See chap. xx. 3. and xl. 5. with its com. And he (Joseph) told it (his dream) to his father,

and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? &c. Ge. xxxvii. 10. They (the butler and baker of Pharaok) dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison. Ge. xl. 5. And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley-bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian and all the hosts. Ju vii. 13, 14.

The river.] So he (Jacob) fled with all that he had: and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead. Ge. xxxi. 21. And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive. Er. i. 22. And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe also these two signs (Moses' rod being turned into a serpent, and his hand become leprous), neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land: and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land. Ex. iv. 9. The land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs. De. xi. 10. The waters shall fail from the sea (in the judgments of God against Jerusalem), and the river shall be wasted and dried up. Is. xix. 5. Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that leth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself. And the land of Egypt shall be desolate and waste, and they shall know that I am the Lord: because he hath said, The river is mine, and I have made it. Ez. xxix. 3. 9.

2 There came up, &c.] And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river. And (Joseph said
