And he said, What 10 hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from ment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence; for without the law sin was dead: for I was alive without the law once, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. Rom. vii. 8, 9. Then, when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin, and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James i. 15. 8 Talked with Abel, &c.] And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him "quietly" (or "peaceably") and smote him there under the fifth rib that he died. 2 Sam. iii. 27. Then said Absalom (to David), if not, I pray thee let my brother Amnon go with us. Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, smite Amnon, then kill him. 2 Sam. xiii. 26. 28. And Joab said to Amasa, art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him; but Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand, so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and he died. 2 Sam. xx. 9, 10. Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono; but they thought to do me mischief. Nehem. vi. 2. The words of his mouth (the mouth of the wicked) are iniquity and deceit he hath left off to be wise, and to do good. Ps. xxxvi. 3. The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart. His words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords. Ps. lv. 21. He that hateth, dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it, and a flattering mouth worketh ruin. Prov. xxvi. 24. 28. A man's enemies are the men of his own house. Micah vii. 6. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? Luke xxii. 48. Cain rose up, &c.] And thy hand-maid (said the widow of Tekoah to David) had two sons, and they two strove together in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote the other and slew him. 2 Sam. xiv. 6. If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away; for then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot. Job xi. 15. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord, and who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not sworn deceitfully. This is the generation of them that VOL. I. seek him; that seek thy face, "O Jacob" ("O God of Jacob"). Ps. xxiv. 3, 4. 6. Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God; depart from me, therefore, ye bloody men. Ps. cxxxix. 19. Behold, I send you prophets, &c. that upon "you" (" Pharisees") may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias. Matt. xxiii. 35. That the blood of all the prophets may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel, &c. Luke xi. 50, 51. We should love one another, not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer! 1 John iii. 12. 15. Woe unto "them," ("false teachers") for they have gone in the way of Cain. Jude 11. 9 Where is thy brother?] See chap. iii. 9. 11. When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them; he forgetteth not the cry of the "humble" (or "afflicted"). Ps. ix. 12. I know not, &c.] And Isaac his father said unto him, who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy first-born, Esau! Gen. xxvii. 32. And thou sayest, "how doth God know?" (or "what doth God know?") Can he judge through the dark cloud? Thick clouds are a covering to him that he seeth not. Job xxii. 13, 14. He that covereth his sins shall not prosper. Prov. xxviii. 13. "He" ("the Devil") was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it. John viii. 44. Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after "it" ("the inheritance") was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart, (said Peter) thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. How is it that ye (Ananias and Sapphira) have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? Acts v. 4. 9. 10 What hast thou done, &c.] See chap. iii. 13. And Joshua said unto Achan, tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me. Josh. vii. 19. These things hast thou (the wicked) done, and I kept silence. Thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Ps. 1. 21. Crieth unto me, &c.] Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, I will go down now and see, whether they have done alto- ' Ꭰ 11 the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand: 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the gether according to the cry of it. Gen. xviii. 20, 21. I have surely seen the affliction of my people Israel, which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry. Exod. iii. 7. Surely I have seen yesterday "the blood" (or "the bloods") of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the Lord, and I will requite thee (Ahab) in this plot (or portion of ground). 2 Kings ix. 26. O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no place. Job xvi. 18. Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out. Job xxiv. 12. If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain; if I have eaten the fruits (or strength) thereof, without money, or have "caused the owners thereof to lose their life" (or "caused the soul of the owners thereof to expire"): let thistles grow instead of wheat, &c. Job xxxi. 38, 39, 40. He (the Lord) forgetteth not the cry of the humble. Ps. ix. 12. Precious shall "their blood" ("the blood of the poor") be in his sight. Ps. lxxii. 14. He (the Lord) looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry. Isa. v. 7. And "by it" ("by faith") he (Abel) being dead, yet speaketh" (or "is yet spoken of"). Heb. xi. 4. Ye (Hebrews) are come to Jesus, the Mediator of the New "Covenant," (or Testament") and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Heb. xii. 24. The cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth (addressed to wicked rich men). James v. 4. And they (the souls of them that were slain for the word of God) cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge, and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth? Rev. vi. 10. 66 11 Cursed from the earth, &c.] Behold (said Cain to God) thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth, &c. Gen. iv. 14. See chap. iii. verse 14. Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. Deut. xxvii. 16. 26. If thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments, and his statutes, all these curses shall come upon thee. Deut. xxviii. 15. Keep the words of this covenant, lest there be among you a man, &c. whose heart turneth away this day from the Lord, and it come to pass when he heareth the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of mine heart! The Lord will not Opened her mouth, &c.] O earth, cover not thou my blood. Job xvi. 18. If my land cry against me, let thistles grow instead of wheat. Job xxxi. 38. 40. Behold the Lord cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquities; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. Isa. xxvi. 21. And the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the blood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. Rev. xii. 16. 66 12 It shall not, &c.] See chap. iii. 17, 18. And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land" ("the land of the disobedient”) shall not yield her increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits. Lev. xxvi. 20. And my heaven that is over thy head shall be brass, and the earth that is under thee shall be iron; the Lord shall make the rain of thy land powder and dust: from heaven shall it come down upon thee, until thou be destroyed. Deut. xxviii. 23, 24. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope. Rom viii. 20. A fugitive, &c.] See verse 14. And upon them that are left alive of you, I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, and the sound of a "shaken" (or 66 driven") leaf shall chase them, and "they" ("the disobedient") shall flee, as fleeing from a sword, and they shall fall when none pursueth. Lev. xxvi. 36. Among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest, but the Lord shall give thee there a trembling heart and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind; and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee, and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life. Deut. xxviii. 65, 66. Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg; let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places. Ps. cix. 10. Behold I will make "thee" (" Pashur” for smiting Jeremiak) a terror to thyself and to all thy friends, and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it. Jer. xx. 4. My God will cast them (Ephraim for their idolatry) away, because they did not hearken unto him, and they shall be wanderers among the nations. Hos. ix. 17. earth. And Cain said unto the Lord, My punishment is greater 13 than I can bear. Behold, thou hast driven me out this day 14 from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. And the Lord said unto him, Therefore, whosoever slayeth 15 Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord 13 My punishment, &c.] He (the wicked man) believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword. Job xv. 22. And men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues, and they repented not to give him glory. They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a talent; and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for the plague thereof was exceeding great. Rev. xvi. 9. 11. 21. 14 Driven me out, &c.] The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days; trouble and anguish shall make him afraid. Job xv. 20. 24. The wicked is driven away in his wickedness. Prov. xiv. 32. The wicked flee when no man pursueth; but the righteous are bold as a lion. Prov. xxviii. 1. And they shall look unto the earth; and behold-trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness. Isa. viii. 22. Therefore they (Ephraim) shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney. Hos. xiii. 3. From thy face, &c.] See verse 16. Therefore"they" ("the wicked") say unto God, depart from us: for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him? Job xxi. 14. 15. Cast me not away from thy presence (said David to God). Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God. Ps. li. 11. 14. Hide not thy face, from me. Ps. cxliii. 7. Then shall he (the Judge in the last day) say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me ye cursed into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment. Matt. xxv. 41. 46. "Who" (i. e. "the enemies of the Thessalonians") shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power. 2 Thess. i. 9. Fugitive, &c.] See verse 12. That every one that findeth, &c.] See verse 15. And surely your blood of your lives will I require (said God). At the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood by man shall his blood be shed. Gen. ix. 5, 6. And I will set my face against you (disobedient Israel), and ye shall be slain before your enemies. Lev. xxvi. 17. And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, behold, we die, we perish, we all perish. Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the Lord, shall die. Shall we be consumed with dying? Numb. xvii. 12, 13. The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him, he shall slay him. If the revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the revenger of blood kill the slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood. Numb. xxxv. 19. 27. And behold (said the woman of Tekoah to David), the whole family is risen against thine handmaid; and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also. 2 Sam. xiv. 7. Slay them not (said David of his enemies), lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power, and bring them down O Lord, our shield. Ps. lix. 11. And the Lord said unto him, (Hosea), call "his name" ("the name of his son by Gomer") Jezreel; for yet a little while and I will "avenge the blood" (or "visit the blood") of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu, and will cause to cease the kingdom of the house of Israel. Hosea i. 4. All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Matt. xxvi. 52. Sevenfold, &c.] If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. Gen. iv. 24. And if you will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins. And if you walk contrary unto me," (or at all adventures with me") and will not hearken unto me, I will bring seven times 66 16 set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land 17 of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the 18 name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. And unto more plagues upon you, according to your sins. Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins. Then will I walk contrary unto you also in fury: and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins. Lev. xxvi. 18. 21. 24. 28. And render unto our neighbours sevenfold into their bosom, their reproach, wherewith they have reproached thee, O Lord. Ps. lxxix. 12. If "he" ("the thief") be found, he shall restore sevenfold. Prov. vi. 31. Set a mark upon Cain, &c.] And the Lord said unto him, (Ezekiel) go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and "set" (or "mark") a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof. Ezek. ix. 4. If any man worship the beast, and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, the same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God. And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever. And they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. Rev. xiv. 9. 11. 16 Went out, &c.] See verse 14. and chap. iii. 8. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon. Exod. xx. 24. And the Lord was gracious unto them, and had compassion on them, and had respect unto them, because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and would not destroy them, neither cast he them from his presence as yet. 2 Kings xiii. 23. For through the anger of the Lord it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until he had cast them out from his presence, that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. 2 Kings xxiv. 20. And the Lord said unto Satan, behold all that he (Job) hath, is in thy power," (or "hand") only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. Job i. 12. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils, from the sole of his foot unto his crown. Job ii. 7. He (the wicked) shall not see the rivers, the "floods," (or "streaming brooks") the brooks of honey and butter. Job xx. 17. Cast me not away from thy presence. Ps. li. 11. As smoke is driven away, so drive them away. As wax melteth before the fire, so let the wicked perish at the presence of God. Ps. Ixviii. 2. Therefore behold I, even I, will utterly forget you (the false prophets), and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you 66 For and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence. And he builded, &c.] And they (the families of the sons of Noah) said, go to; let us build us a city, and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven: and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. Gen. xi. 4. I (the preacher) made me great works; I builded me houses, then I looked on all the works that my hand had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured, and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit. Eccles. ii. 4. 11. And the king (Nebuchadnezzar) spake and said, is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom, by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? Dan. iv. 30. As it was in the days of Lot (said Jesus), they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded: even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Luke xvii. 28. 30. The name of the city, &c.] For he (Absalom) said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance; and he called the pillar (which he had reared up for himself in the king's dale) after his own name, and it is called unto this day Absalom's place. 2 Sam. xviii. 18. Their inward thought (the thought of the fool and brutish person), is that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places "to all generations" (or "to generation and generation"). They call their lands after their own Ps. xlix. 11. names. Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. And Lamech 19 took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. And Adah bare Jabal: he was 20 the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle. And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such 21 as handle the harp and organ. And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, 22 an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah 23 and Zillah, hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech: for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt: If Cain shall be avenged seven-fold, truly Lamech 24 seventy and seven-fold. And Adam knew his wife again; and 25 she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he 26 24. 19 Two wives, &c.] And Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan, Adah and Aholibamah. Gen. xxxvi. 2. See chap. ii. 18. Have ye not read, he that made them at the beginning, made them male and female; they are no more twain but one flesh; what, therefore, God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, suffered you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. Matt. xix. 4. 6. 8. of 20 The father, &c.] See verse 21. Ye are your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do, &c. John viii. 44. He (Abraham) received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised, that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised. Rom. iv. 11. Dwell in tents, &c.] See verse 2. Jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents. Gen. xxv. 27. Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab, to drink no wine, &c. nor to build houses for us to dwell in; but we (the Rechabites) have dwelt in tents. Jer. xxxv. 8, 9, 10. By faith he (Abraham) sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob. Heb. xi. 9. 21 The harp and organ.] Wherefore didst thou (Jacob) steal away from me, I (Laban) might have sent thee away with mirth and with songs, with tabret and with harp. Gen. xxxi. 27. They (the wicked) take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. Job xxi. 12. And the harp and the viol, the tabret and pipe, and wine are in their feasts (in the feasts of sinners). Isa. v. 12. (Woe unto them) that "chaunt" (" abound with superfluities") to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of music, like David. Amos vi. 5. 22 Brass and iron, &c.] And this is the offering which ye shall take of them (the Israelites for the tabernacle), gold and silver and brass, &c. Exod. xxv. 3. Only the gold and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead, every thing that may abide the fire, ye shall make it go through the fire and it shall be clean. Numb. xxxi. 22, 23. The Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. Deut. viii. 9. Thy shoes (Israel) shall be iron and brass. Deut. xxxiii. 25. Send me now, therefore, (said Solomon) a man cunning to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, &c. 2 Chron. ii. 7. 23 Hear my voice, &c.] And he (Balaam) took up his parable and said, rise up Balak and hear, hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor. Numb. xxiii. 18.
