14 Zebulun.] And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son, and she called his name Zebulun (i. e. dwelling). Ge. xxxviii. 19, 20. Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for a haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zion. Ge. xlix. 13. These are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said the Lord to Moses): of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon. Of the children of Zebulun, those that were numbered of them were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred. Nu. i. 9. 30, 31. Of the sons of Zebulun after their families of Sered, the family of the Sardites: of Elon, the family of the Elonites of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites: these are the families of the Zebulunites, threescore thousand and five hundred. Padan-aram.] And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian. Ge. xxv. 20.

With his daughter Dinah, &c.] And afterwards she (Leah) bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah (i. e. judgment): and Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. Ge. xxxiv. 1. throughout.

16 The sons of Gad.] And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bare Jacob a son: and Leah said, A troop cometh; and she called his name "Gad" (i. e. "a troop"). Ge. xxx. 10, 11. And the sons of Zilpah, Leah's handmaid; Gad and Asher. Ge. xxxv. 26. Gad (says Jacob), a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last. Ge. xxxix. 19. And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said the Lord to Moses): of Gad; Eliasaph the son of Deuel: of the children of Gad, those that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty. Nu. i. 14. 24, 25. The children of Gad after their families: of Zephon, the family of the Zephonites: of Haggi, the family of the Haggites: of Shuni, the family of the Shunites: of Ozni, the family of the Oznites: of Eri, the family of the Erites: of Arod, the family of the Arodites: of Areli, the family of the Arelites: these are the families of the children of Gad, forty thousand and five hundred. And of Gad he (Moses) said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head; and he provided the first part for himself, because, there in a portion of the lawgiver was he seated: and he came with the heads of the people, he executeth the judgments of the Lord, and his judgments with Israel. Arodi.] See Nu. xxvi. 15. 17. preced. com. 17 Asher.] And Zilpah, Leah's maid, bare Jacob a second son, and Leah said, Happy a I, for the daughters will call me blessed. And she called his name Asher. Ge. xxx. 13 And these are the sons of Zilpah, Leah's

and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister; and the sons of Beri-.. ah; Heber, and Malchiel. These are the sons of Zilpah, whom 18 Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob,

even sixteen souls.

The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and 19

handmaid; Gad, and Asher. Ge. xxxv. 26. Out of Asher (said Jacob) his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties. Ge. xlix. 20. And these are the names of the men that shall stand with thee (said the Lord to Moses), of Asher; Pagiel the son of Ocran. Of the children of Asher, those that were numbered of them, were forty and one thousand and five hundred. Nu. i. 13. 40, 41. Of the children of Asher, after their families: of Jimna, the family of the Jimnites: of Jesui, the family of the Jesuites: of Beriah, the family of the Beriites. Of the sons of Beriah of Heber, the family of the Heberites of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites. And the name of the daughter of Asher was Sarah. Nu. xxvi. 44, 45, 46. 18 Zilpah.] And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah, Zilpah his maid for an handmaid. Ge. xxix. 24. When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife. Ge. xxx.

shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb: the blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren. Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil. Ge. xlix. 22-27. And Joseph fell upon his father's face (mourning for him), and wept upon him, and kissed him. Ge. 1. 1. and throughout. These are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said the Lord to Moses): of the children of Joseph; of Ephraim; Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh; Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. Of the children of Benjamin, those that were numbered of them, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred. 19 Rachel.] It is better (said Laban to Nu. i. 10, 11. 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37. The Jacob) that I give her (Rachel) thee, than sons of Joseph, after their families, were that I should give her to another man. Ge. Manasseh, and Ephraim, &c. The sons of xxix. 19. And she (Rachel) conceived, and Benjamin, after their families, they that were bare a son, and she called his name Joseph. numbered of them were forty and five thou(i. e. Adding.) Ge. xxx. 24. And they sand and six hundred. Nu. xxvi. 38. 41. Let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren. His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of Unicorns: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth. And they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the thousands of Manasseh. De. xxxiii. 12-17.

Joseph.] See Ge. xxvii. 39. 40. 45. and 47. throughout. Joseph (said Jacob) is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall: the archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: but his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel): even by the God of thy father, who

These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these 26 unto Jacob: all the souls were seven. All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's

20 Manasseh and Ephraim.] Unto Joseph were born two sons. And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: and the name of the second called he Ephraim. Ge. xli. 50, 51, 52. and com. See preced. com. Of the sons of Manasseh of Machir the family of the Macharites. And Machir begat Gilead; of Gilead come the family of the Gileadites, &c. These are the families of Manasseh, that were numbered of them, fifty and two thousand and seven hundred. These are the sons of Ephraim after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthalhites; of Becher the family of the Bachrites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites. These are the families of the sons of Ephraim, thirty and two thousand and five hundred. Nu. xxvi. 29-37. And the children of the half tribe of Manasseh dwelt in the land, they increased from Bashan unto Baal-hermon, and Senir, and unto Mount Hermon, &c. 1 Ch. v. 23. &c. The sons of Manasseh: Ashriel, whom his wife bare (but his concubine the Aramitess bare Machir the father of Gilead). 1 Ch. vii. 14.

Huppim.] Of Hupham, the family of the Huphamites. Nu. xxvi. 39.

23 Dan.] Bilhah conceived, and bare a

son: and Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son, therefore called she his name Dan. Ge. xxx. 5, 6. and com. And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said God to Moses); of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; of the children of Dan that were numbered of them, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred. i. 12. 38, 39. The standard of the camp of the children of Dan set forward, which was the rere-ward of all the camps throughout their hosts. Nu. x. 25. See Ch. ii. 2. And of the Danites, expert in war (who came to David to Ziklag), twenty and eight thousand and six hundred. 1 Ch. xii. 35.

Hushim.] These are the sons of Dan after their families of Shuham, the family of the Shuhamites, &c. Nu. xxvi. 42.

24 Naphtali.] Bilhah Rachel's maid conceived again, and bare a second son. And Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed, and she called his name Naphtali. Ge. xxx. 7, 8. and com. And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you (said God to Moses); of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan of the children of Naphtali, those that were numbered of them were, fifty and three thousand and four hundred. Nz. i 15. 42, 43. Of the sons of Naphtali after their families, they that were numbered of them, were forty and five thousand and four hundred. Nu. xxvi. 48. 50. In the days of Pekah, king of Israel, came Tiglath-pieser, king of Assyria, and took all the land of Naphtali, and carried them captive to Assyria. 2 Ki. xv. 29. See 1 Ch. ii. 2. Of Naphtali a thousand captains (came to David to Ziking), and with them, with shield and spear, thirty and seven thousand. 1 Ch. xii. 34. Jahzeel.] 1 Ch. vii. 13.

26 His loins.] A nation and a company of nations (said God to Jacob) shall be af thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins Ge. xxxv. 11. All the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already. E. i. 5

sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six; "And the sons 27 of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten. And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to 28 direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel 29 his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. And Israel said 30 unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive. And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto 31 his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto

Gideon had had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten, for he had many wives. Ju. viii. 30.

27 Threescore and ten.] See com. on verse 26. Come up unto the Lord (said a voice unto Moses), thou, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and worship ye afar off. Ex. xxiv. 1. Thy fathers (said Moses) went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons: and now the Lord thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude. De. x. 22. Then (when Joseph's kindred were made known unto Pharaoh) sent Joseph, and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls. Ac. vii. 14.

28 Judah.] And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad (Benjamin) with me, and we will arise, and go, that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones. Ge. xliii. 8. And Judah said (to Joseph when his cup was found in Benjamin's sack), What shall we say unto my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found. And he said, God forbid that I should do so, but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant, and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father. Then Judah (humbly supplicating, and relating what his father had said unto him) said, How shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? Lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father. Ge. xliv. 16-34. Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise, thine hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies. Thy father's children (said Jacob) shall bow down before thee. Ge. xlix. 8.

To direct his face unto Goshen.] He (Jacob) fled with all that he had (from Laban), and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the Mount Gilead. xxxi. 21.

Ge.

Goshen.] Ye shall say (said Joseph to his brethren, when Pharaoh shall say, What is your occupation), Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until

now; that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen : for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians. Ge. xlvi. 34. Thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen (was the message of Joseph to his father), and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast. Ge. xlv. 10. Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan, and behold, they are in the land of Goshen. Ge. xlvii. 1.

29 His chariot.] And he (Pharaoh) made him (Joseph) to ride in the second chariot which he had. Ge. xli. 43. Take you (the command of Pharaoh to Joseph's brethren) wagons out of the land of Egypt, for your little ones, and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. And the children of Israel did so. And Joseph gave them wagons according to the commandment of Pharaoh. Ge. xlv. 19. 21.

Fell on his neck.] And Esau ran to meet him (Jacob) and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept. Ge. xxxiii. 4. and com.

30 Now let me die.] And Israel said (unto his sons), It is enough, Joseph my son is yet alive, I will go and see him before I die. Ge. xlv. 28. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace (said Simeon with the infant Jesus in his arms), according to thy word, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation. Lu. ii. 28, 30.

31 I will go up.] And the fame thereof was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Say unto thy brethren, take your father and your housholds and come unto me, and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt, and ye shall eat the fat of the land; regard not your stuff, for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours. Ge. xlv. 16-20 Then Joseph came, and told Pharaoh, and said, My father, and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan: and behold, they are in the land of Goshen. And Joseph brought in Jacob his father, and set

him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land 32 of Canaan, are come unto me; And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle: and they have brought their 33 flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your 34 occupation? That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

CHAPTER XLVII.

1 THEN Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and

him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

Ge. xlvii. 1. 7.

32 Shepherds.] Abel was a keeper of sheep. Ge. iv. 2. and com. And he (Jacob) carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. Ge. xxxi. 18. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren. Ge. xxxvii. 2. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold he keepeth the sheep. 1 Sa. xvi. 11. David went, and returned from Saul, to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem. 1 Sa. xvii. 15. He (the Lord) shall feed his flock like a shepherd, he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 11. But he (the prophet who is ashamed of his vision) shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman: for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. Zec. xiii. 5.

Their trade hath been to feed cattle.] See verse 34. And Noah began to be an husbandman, and planted a vineyard. Ge. ix. 20. And Hiram sent in the navy (of Solomon) his servants, shipmen that had knowledge of the sea, with the servants of Solomon. 1 Ki. ix. 27. And Ahab said unto Obadiah (the governor of his house, in the extremity of the famine), Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks, peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts: so they divided the land between them, to pass throughout it. Ahab went one way by himself; and Obadiah went another way by himself. 1 Ki. xviii. 5, 6.

And they have brought their flocks.] And thou (Jacob) shalt dwell in the land of Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou and thy children, and thy children's children, and thy flocks, and thy herds, and all that thou hast.

Ge. xlv. 10.

33 What is your occupation.] See verse 32. And he (Joseph) took some of his bre

thren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh. And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we and also our fathers. They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come, for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks. Ge. xlvii. 2, 3, 4. Then said they (his companions in the skip to Jonah), Tell us we pray thee for whose cause this evil (the tempest) is upon us? What is thine occupation? And whence comest thou! What is thy country, and of what people art thou? Jon. i. 8.

34 Thy servants' trade.] See verse 32. And he (Laban) removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked, and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled, and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons. Ge xxx. 35. Jacob heard that he (Shechem) had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come. Ge. xxxiv. 5. "His" (" Joseph's") brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. Ge. xxxvii. 12.

For every shepherd is an abomination, &c.] And they set on (bread) for him (Joseph) by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians which did eat with him, by themselves; because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. Ge. xliii

32.

And Moses said (to Pharaoh, who said, Go ye, sacrifice to your God in the land), It is not meet so to do, for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the Lord our God: lo, shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, and will they not stone us? Ex. viii. 26.

CHAP. XLVII.—] Joseph came and told Pharaoh, &c.] And the fame was heard in Pharaoh's house, saying, Joseph's brethren are come; and it pleased Pharaoh well, and his servants. Ge. xlv. 16. Joseph said unto
