deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. And 12 the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. In the 13 self same day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark; They, and every beast after his kind, and 14 all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort. And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as 16 God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in. And the 17 flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. For when they shall say, peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, and they shall not escape. 1 Thess. v. 3.

12 Forty days, &c.] See verses 4. 17. And Moses was in the mount (Horeb) forty days and forty nights. Exod. xxiv. 18. When I (Moses) was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, then I abode in the mount forty days, and forty nights. And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days, and forty nights. Deut. ix. 9. 18. And I stayed in the mount, according to the first time, forty days, and forty nights. Deut. x. 10. And he (Elijah) arose and did eat and drink, and went, in the strength of that meat, forty days, and forty nights, unto Horeb, the mount of God. 1 Kings xix. 8. And when he (Jesus) had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. Matt. iv. 2.

Shem and Ham, &c.] See chap. v. 32. and vi. 10. The sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan. Gen. ix. 18.

18 Waters prevailed, &c.] And the waters returned and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh, that

came into the sea after" them" (the Israelites),
and the waters were a wall unto them on their
right hand and on their left. Exod. xiv. 28.
Which (wicked men) were cut down out of
time, whose foundation was overflown with a
flood. Job xxii. 16. Let not the water-flood

19 And all the high hills, &c.] Behold he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. Job xii. 15. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though the waters thereof roar and be troubled; though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Ps. xlvi. 2. 3. Thou coveredst “it” (“the earth") with the deep, as with a garment. The waters stood above the mountains. Thou hast set a bound, that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth. Ps. civ. 6.9. Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains; truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel. Jer. iii. 23. The world, that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. 2 Pet. iii. 6. 20 See verse 19.

21 All flesh died.] See verse 4. and chap. vi. 6, 7. 13. 17. Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have trodden; which said unto God, depart from us; and what can the Almighty do for them? Job xxii. 15. 17. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate. The earth is utterly broken down; the earth is clean dissolved, and the foundations of the

cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon 22 the earth, and every man : All in whose nostrils was the breath of 23 life, of all that was in the dry land, died. And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only 24 remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark. And the

waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.

CHAPTER VIII.

1 AND God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the

earth do shake. Isa. xxiv. 6. 19. For my people is foolish, they have not known me. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge; (therefore) the whole land shall be desolate. Jer. iv. 22. 27. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter. How long shall the land mourn and the herbs of every field wither for the wickedness of them that dwell therein? The beasts are consumed and the birds. Jer. xii. 3, 4. Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also, shall be taken away. Hos. iv. 3. The seed is rotten under their clods; the garners are laid desolate; the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered. The beasts of the field cry also unto thee; for the rivers of waters are dried up, &c. Joel i. 17. 20. The land is as the garden of Eden before them, behind "them" ("the locusts") a desolate wilderness. Joel ii. 3. I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven and the fishes of the sea. Zeph. i. 3. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. Matt. xxiv. 36. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Luke xvii. 27. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same, in hope: for we know that the whole creation (or every creature) groaneth, and travaileth in pain together until now. Rom. viii. 20. 22. And (God) spared not the old world, but saved Noe, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly. 2 Pet. ii. 5.

23 Every living substance.] See verse 21, 22. And Noah only, &c.] Thus, the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore. Exod. xiv. 30. He shall deliver thee in six troubles; yea in seven there shall no evil touch thee. Job v. 19. He that

dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty; because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the Most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befal thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. Ps. xci. 1. 9. 10. Righteousness delivereth from death. Prov. xi. 4. Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in "it" (the land that sinneth), as I live, saith the Lord God, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness. Ezek. xiv. 14. 20. And they (that feared the Lord) shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son, that serveth him; then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked; between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not. Mal. iii. 17, 18. And these (the wicked) shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal. Matt. xxv. 46. Heb. xi. 7. 1 Pet. iii. 20. 2 Pet. iì. 5. at verse 7. The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment, to be punished. 2 Pet. ii. 9. The world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished. 2 Pet. iii. 6.

24 An hundred and fifty days, &c.] And the waters returned from off the earth continually, and after the end of the hundred and fifty days, the waters were abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month (of the year), upon the mountains of Ararat. And the dove came in to him in the evening, and lo, in her mouth, was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. Gen. viii. 3, 4. 11.

CHAP. VIII.-1 God remembered Noah, &c.] When God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow. Gen. xix. 29. And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened unto her, and opened her womb. Gen. xxx. 22. And God heard their (the children of Israel's) groaning, and God re

And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in 5 the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the moutains seen. And it came to pass at the end of forty days, 6 that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made.

Ne. xiii. 14. 22. 29. 31. O that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me. Job xiv. 13. Remember me, O Lord, with the favour, that thou bearest unto thy people. Ps. cvi. 4. Lord, remember David and all his afflictions. Ps. cxxxii. 1. (God) who remembered us, in our low estate; for his mercy endureth for ever. Ps. cxxxvi. 23. Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom, in the day of Jerusalem, who said, rase it, rase it even to the foundation thereof. Ps. cxxxvii. 7. The Lord hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, surely I will never forget any of their works. Amos viii. 7. O Lord, in wrath remember mercy. Hab. iii. 2. And great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. Rev. xvi. 19. God hath remembered her iniquities. Rev. xviii. 5. The cattle, &c.] And the angel of the Lord said unto him (Balaam), wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? Numb. xxii. 32. O Lord, thou preservest man and beast. Ps. xxxvi. 6. And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are much cattle? Jonah iv. 11. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him, who hath subjected the same in hope, because the creature itself shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, into the glorious liberty of the children of God; for we know that "the whole creation" (or every creature") groaneth and travaileth in pain together, until now. Rom. viii. 20, 21, 22.

A wind, &c.] And the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind, all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the

waters were divided. Exod. xiv. 21. At thy rebuke they (the waters) fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away; thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again, to cover the earth. Ps. civ. 7. 9. The north wind driveth away rain. Prov. xxv. 23.

2 Fountains also, &c.] See chap. vii. 11. The Lord possessed "me" ("wisdom") in the beginning, when he strengthened the fountains of the deep. Prov. viii. 28. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas, and the floods compassed me about; all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Jonah ii. 3.

The rain from heaven, &c.] By watering he (the Lord) wearieth the thick cloud, he scattereth his bright cloud, he causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy. Job xxxvii. 11. 13. Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven? Job xxxviii. 37. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this man, go, and he goeth; and to another, come, and he cometh; and to my servant, do this, and he doeth it. And he saith unto them, why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea; but the men marvelled, saying, what manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him? Matt. viii. 9. 26, 27.

Ararat.] And "they" (" the murderers of Sennacherib") escaped into the land of Armenia (or Ararat). 2 Kings xix. 37. Isa. xxxvii, 38. Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her (Babylon), call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat. Jer. li. 27. 5 See chap. vii. 11.

6 Window, &c.] See chap. vi. 16. Now when Daniel knew that the writing (the ensnaring decree) was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber, toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. Dan. vi. 10.

7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the 8 waters were dried up from off the earth. Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the 9 ground; But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark; for the waters were on the face of the whole earth. Then he put forth his hand, and took her, and 10 pulled her in unto him into the ark. And he stayed yet other seven 11 days: and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the 12 earth. And he stayed yet other seven days: and sent forth the 13 dove; which returned not again unto him any more. And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, 14 the face of the ground was dry. And in the second month, on the 15 seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried. And 16 God spake unto Noah, saying, Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy

7 Araven.] These are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; every raven after his kind. Lev. xi. 13. 15. And I have commanded the ravens to feed thee (Elijah). And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening. 1 Kings xvii. 4. 6. Who provideth for the raven his food? Job xxxviii. 41. He giveth food to the young ravens which cry. Ps. cxlvii. 9.

8 A dove, &c.] See verse 10. 12. Behold, thou art fair, my love, thou hast dove's eyes. Cant. i. 15. For, lo, the rain is over and gone; O my dove, thou art in the clefts of the rocks. And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land. Can. ii. 11, 12. 14. Be ye wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Matt. x. 16.

9 Found no rest, &c.] Among these nations shalt thou find no ease (said the Lord by Moses), neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest (0 house of Israel). Deut. xxviii. 65. But they that escape of them (Israel) shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity. Ezek. vii. 16. Come unto me, all ye that labour, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matt. xi. 28. In the world ye shall have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John xvi. 33.

And she returned, &c.] Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. Ps. cxvi. 7. Who are these that fly as a cloud, and as the doves to their windows? Isa. lx. 8.

10 Stayed yet, &c.] I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. Ps. xl. 1. And I will wait upon the Lord, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. Isa. viii. 17. Yea, in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, have we waited for thee. Isa. xxvi. 8. But if we

hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Rom. viii. 25.

Seven days, &c.] See verse 12. chap. vii. 4. 10. 11 Olive leaf, &c.] Go forth unto the mount and fetch olive branches, &c. to make booths, as it is written. Nehem. viii. 15. What be these two olive branches which, through the two golden pipes, empty the golden oil out of themselves? These are the two anointed ones. Zech. iv. 12. 14. How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Rom. x. 15.

12 He stayed yet, &c.] Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart; wait, I say, on the Lord. Ps. xxvii. 14. I wait for the Lord; my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. Ps. cxxx. 5. See Isa. viii. 17. at verse 10. This is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Isa. xxv. 9. See Isa. xxvi. 8. at verse 10. And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you. Isa. xxx. 18. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry. Hab. ii. 3. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord: behold the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain; be ye also patient, stablish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. 16 Go forth, &c.] See chap. vii. 1. 7. 13. And the priests, that bare the ark of the

wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee. Bring forth with 17 thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth. And Noah went forth, and his sons, 18 and his wife, and his sons' wives with him: Every beast, every 19 creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark. And Noah 20 builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and

covenant of the Lord, stood firm on dry ground, in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan. Josh. iii. 17. For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished, that the Lord commanded Joshua. Command the priests (said Joshua) that bear the ark of the covenant, that they come up out of Jordan; and it came to pass when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests' feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks as they did before. Josh. iv. 10. 16. 18. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Ps. xci. 11. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth, and even for evermore. Ps. cxxi. 8. Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire (said Nebuchadnezzar). And he spake and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth and come hither. Dan. iii. 25, 26. As for thee also (Zion), by the blood of thy covenant, I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit, wherein is no water. Zech. ix. 11. Paul said unto them (the magistrates who sent to let them go) they have beaten us openly uncondemned, and now do they thrust us out privily? Nay, verily, but let them come themselves and fetch us out; and they came and besought them, and brought them out (of the prison). Acts xvi. 37, 38, 39.

17 Bring forth, &c.] See chap. vii. 14, 15. Breed abundantly, &c.] See chap. i. 22. Be ye fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth. Gen. ix. 1. 7. He blessed them also, so that they are multiplied greatly, and suffereth not their cattle to decrease. cvii. 38. That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store; that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets; that our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets. Ps. cxliv. 13, 14. I will sow the house of Israel, and the house of Judah, with the seed of man, and with the seed of beast (saith the Lord); and like as I have watched over them,

to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant, saith the Lord. Jer. xxxi. 27, 28.

18 Went forth, &c.] The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth, and even for evermore. Ps. cxxi. 8.

20 Builded an altar, &c.] See chap. iv. 4. And there (in the plain of Moreh) builded he (Abram) an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and there he builded an altar unto the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord. Gen. xii. 7, 8. (And Abram) went unto the place of the altar which he had made, and there Abram called on the name of the Lord. Gen. xiii. 4. And they (Abraham and Isaac) came to the place which God had told him of, and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. Gen. xxii. 9. And he (Isaac) builded an altar there (at Beersheba), and called upon the name of the Lord. Gen. xxvi. 25. And he (Jacob) erected there an altar, and called it "Elelohe, Israel" (or "God, the God of Israel”). Gen. xxxiii. 20. And God said unto Jacob, arise, go up to Bethel, and make there an altar unto God; and he built there an altar, and called the place “El Bethel” (or “the God of Bethel"), because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. Gen. xxxv. 1. 7. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings (said the Lord). In all places where I record my name, I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee: and if thou wilt make an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone, for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. Exod. xx. 24, 25. And Moses rose up early in the morning, and builded an altar under "the hill" (" Horeb"), and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. And he sent young men, which offered burnt offerings; and Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, behold the blood of the covenant which the Lord hath made with you, concerning all these words (of the law).
