Moving creature, &c.] He (Solomon) spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes. 1 Kings iv. 33.

Life, &c.] And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat. Gen. i. 30. For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein, shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity, and a great evil. Eccles. ii. 21.

whale's belly, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Matt. xii. 40.

Brought forth abundantly.] Bring forth with thee (said God to Noah) every living thing that is with thee. Gen. viii. 17. And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. Gen. ix. 7. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Exod. i. 7. And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, (as a plague to Egypt). Exod. viii. 3.

22 God blessed, &c.] And God blessed them (the creatures which he had made), and God said unto them, be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it. Gen. i. 28.

24 Let the earth bring forth.] Of fowls after their kind, and of cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the earth after his kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. Gen. vi. 20. They (Noah and his sons, &c.) and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort. And they went in unto Noah into the ark. Gen. vii. 14, 15. Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion, or fill the appetite of the young lions, when they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? Job xxxviii. 39, 40. Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve? Who hath sent out the wild ass free? or who hath loosed the bands of the wild ass? Will the unicorn be willing to serve thee? or abide by thy crib? Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? xxxix. 1. 5. 9. 19. Behold now Behemoth which I made with thee, he eateth grass as an ox. Job xl. 15. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he-goats out of thy folds; for every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. Ps. 1. 9, 10. The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats. The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. Man goeth forth unto his work, and to his labour until the evening. Ps. civ. 18. 21. 23. Beasts and all cattle, creeping things and flying fowl, (praise the Lord). Ps. cxlviii. 10.

25 Made the beast, &c.] And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air, and brought, them unto Adam, to see what he would call them; and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field. Gen. ii. 19, 20. Speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee, and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the

breath of all mankind? Job xii. 8. 10. By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens. Job xxvi. 13.

26 Let us make man, &c.] And the Lord God said, behold the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil. Gen. iii. 22. Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. Gen. xi. 7. But none saith, where is God my maker? Job xxxv. 10. Know ye that the Lord he is God, it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves. Ps. c. 3. Let Israel rejoice in him that made him. Ps. cxlix. 2. But now, O Lord, thou art our father, we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Isa. Ixiv. 8. But Jesus answered them, my Father worketh hitherto, and I work. John v. 17. If a man love me, he will keep my words, and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. John xiv. 23. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one. 1 John v. 7.

In our image.] In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him. Gen. v. 1. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed, for in the image of God made he man. Gen. ix. 6. God hath made man upright, but they have sought out many inventions. Eccles. vii. 29. (God) hath made of one blood all nations of men: for in him we live, and move, and have our being. We are the offspring of God. Acts xvii. 26. 28, 29. (Man) is the image and glory of God. 1 Cor. xi. 7. We all, with open face, beholding as in a glass, the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Cor. iii. 18. The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Cor. iv. 4. (I say therefore and testify in the Lord,) that ye put on the new man, which, after God, is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephes. iv. 24. (Christ) who is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of every creature; for by him were all things created. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you, even as the green herb have I given you all things; but flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. Gen. ix. 2, 3, 4. For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee (man). Job v. 23. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man that thou visitest him? for thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands. Thou hast put all things under his feet: all sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field. The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. Ps. viii. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Thou makest darkness, and it is night, wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God. The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. Man goeth forth unto his work and to his labour until the evening. 27 In his own imuge.] If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Ps. cxxxix. 11. He which made them at the beginning, made them male and female. Matt. xix. 4. But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. Mark x. 6. For the man is not of the woman, but the woman of the man: neither was the man created for the woman, but the woman for the man. 1 Cor. xi. 8, 9.

28 God blessed them.] See verse 22. Jabez (who was more honourable than his brethren) called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed. 1 Chron. iv. 10. For thus saith the Lord that created the heavens, God himself that formed the earth, and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited. Isa. xlv. 18. Moveth, &c.] Let the heaven and earth praise him, the seas, and every thing that moveth therein. Ps. lxix. 34.

29 I have given, &c.] The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein. Ps. xxiv. 1. The heaven, even the heavens are the Lord's; but the earth hath he given to the children of men. Ps. cxv. 16. For she (Israel) did not know, that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold. Hosea ii. 8. Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God who giveth us richly all things to enjoy. i Tim. vi. 17.

To you it shall be.] Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat. Gen. ii. 16. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you. Gen. ix. 3. He (the Lord) giveth meat in abundance. Job xxxvi. 31. He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man, that he may bring forth food out of the earth: and wine that maketh glad the heart of man; and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart. Ps. civ. 14, 15. These (the creatures of the deep) wait all upon thee, (the Lord), that thou mayest give them their meat in due season. That thou givest them, they gather thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good. Ps. civ. 27, 28. He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he will ever be mindful of his covenant. Ps. cxi. 5. (0 give thanks unto the Lord,) who giveth food to all flesh; for his mercy endureth for ever. Ps. cxxxvi. 25. The eyes of all wait upon thee, (the Lord), and thou givest them

their meat in due season. Thou openest thine hand, and satisfiest the desire of every living thing. Ps. cxlv. 15, 16. (The Lord) which executeth judgment for the oppressed, which giveth food to the hungry. Ps. cxlvi. 7. He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. Ps. cxlvii. 9. Bread shall be given "him" (" the righteous”). Isa. xxxiii. 16. Give us this day our daily bread. Matt. vi. 11. Therefore I say unto you, take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink. Is not the life more than meat? Behold the fowls of the air, for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Matt. vi. 25, 26. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness. Acts xiv. 17.

30 To every beast.] Their young ones (the young of the hinds) are in good liking; they grow up with corn. The range of the mountains is "his" (the wild ass's) pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing. Job xxxix. 4. 8. Surely the mountains bring "him" ("Behemoth") forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. Job xl. 20. He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. Ps. cxlvii. 9.

31 Very good, &c.] See verse 10. Out of the mouth of the Most High proceedeth not evil and good? Lam. iii. 38. Every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving! 1 Tim. iv. 4.

Sixth day.] And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. Gen. ii. 2. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day. Exod. xx. 11.

CHAPTER II.

1 THUS the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host 2 of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he

1 The heavens.] See verse 4. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And God called the dry land earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he seas. And God saw that it was good. Gen. i. 1. 10. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day; wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exod. xx. 11. It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed. Exod. xxxi. 17. And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. 2 Kings xix. 15. He that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein. Isa. xlii. 5. Mine hand also hath laid the foundation of the earth (said God) and my right hand hath spanned the heavens: when I call unto them they stand up together. Isa. xlviii. 13. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isa. lv. 9. He hath made the earth by his power; he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. Jer. x. 12. The portion of Jacob is not like "them" ("the idols") for he is the former of all things. Jer. x. 16. For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest, although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. Heb. iv. 3. The host of them.] See verse 16. (If any man or woman hath wrought wickedness,) And hath gone and served others gods, and worshipped them, either the sun or moon or any of the host of heaven, thou shalt bring forth

that man or that woman, and shalt stone them with stones. Deut. xvii. 3. He (Manasseh) worshipped all the host of heaven and served them, and he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the Lord. 2 Kings xxi. 3. 5. And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll, and all their host shall fall down as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig-tree. Isa. xxxiv. 4. Lift up your eyes on high and behold who hath created these things that bringeth out their host by number. He calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power, not one faileth. Isa. xl. 26. Hast thou not known, hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. Isa. xl. 28. I have made the earth and created man upon it; I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. Isa. xlv. 12. And they (the Jews) shall spread them (the bones of kings, &c.) before the sun and the moon, and all the host of heaven whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped. Jer. viii. 2. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God. Luke ii. 13. Then (when he Jews made the golden calf) God turned and gave them up to worship the host of heaven. Acts vii. 42.

2 On the seventh day, &c.] See chap. i. 31. Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest. That thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. Exod. xxiii. 12. It (the Sabbath) is a sign between me and the children of Israel, for ever, for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed. Exod. xxxi. 17. But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man servant, nor thy maid servant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy man servant and thy maid servant may rest as well as thou. Deut. v. 14, 15. If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing
