Dedication.

To SAMUEL MARSH, Esq.

The honour and pleasure I have had of your acquaintance for upwards of 50 years, and also the happy association which I have enjoyed as a Member of the Choir during that period, encourages me to prefix your name to this small publication.

Your constant approbation of Sacred Music is evident by the practical encouragement you have so long rendered to it, as well as by the very intelligent cultivation and practice you personally pay to it.

May happiness attend you the remainder of your days, and when the end shall come in which you shall cease to engage in the earthly Choir, may you join that upper and nobler Choir in concert with the Hosts of Heaven, there to sing the Song of Moses and the Lamb for ever and ever.

Yours,

With the most sincere respect,

OLIVER JOHNSON. OLDBURY, Oct., 1870.

PRE FACE.

The primary object of this small publication is the improvement of Congregational Singing. Especially, that all may be able to join in the noble work of Chanting the Psalms.

To ensure so desirable an object, great pains have been taken in the “pointing" and dividing the words in accordance with the natural reading, so that the same has been strictly preserved, whilst the musical rythm of the Chant has been equally maintained.

Most of the Anthems are short and easy, and the introduction of one during Divine Service, will be found to enliven and raise the hearts of the true worshipper. There are a few others of a higher order, for festival occasions.

Sing with the spirit, and with the understanding also."

0. J.
