ever we address thee, O Father, if our prayers are unwise, wilt thou pity us; if they are presumptuous, wilt thou pardon us; if acceptable to thee, grant them, all powerful God; and as we now express our submission to thy decrees, adore thy providence, and bless thy dispensations, so, in that future state, to which we reverently hope thy goodness will raise us, may we continue praising, venerating, worshipping thee, more and more, through worlds without number, and ages without end. Amen.

T

HE Lord bless us and keep us; the Lord make his face shine upon us, and be gracious unto us; the Lord lift up his countenance upon us, and give us peace, now and evermore. Amen.

END OF SERVICE FOR FAST DAYS.

[graphic][merged small][merged small]

This Service may commence with the following Psalm; after which the Person officiating may use such parts of the common Morning or Evening Prayer as he shall judge proper.

THE

PSALM XCIII.

'HE Lord is King, and hath put on glorious apparel; the Lord hath clothed himself with majesty, and girded himself with strength.

Therefore the earth standeth firm and cannot be moved.

Ever since the world began, hath thy throne been established; thou art from everlasting.

The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their

waves.

The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.

Thy testimonies, O Lord, are very sure; holiness becometh thine house forever.

After the Collect for the Day may be used the following Prayer.

[ocr errors]

ETERNAL Lord God, who alone spreadest out the heavens, and rulest the raging of the sea; who hast compassed the waters with bounds, until day and night come to an end; be pleased to receive into thine almighty and most gracious protection the persons of us thy servants, who now call upon thy name from the bosom of the mighty deep. Borne on the surface of a changing element, and exposed to the vicissitudes of the inconstant skies, may we always feel ourselves in the presence and merciful care of that infinite and holy God, who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with a span. Preserve us, we pray thee, from the dangers of the sea; from shipwreck; from fire; from the wrath of the tempest; from the violence of enemies; and grant that we may arrive at our desired haven in safety, health, and peace, and with a thankful remembrance of thy rich and manifold mercies. But we do more especially pray, O Lord our God, that if thou shouldst see fit to bring us into peril and misfortune, we may bear thy whole will with perfect submission, and surrender ourselves in every event to thine absolute and all-wise disposal. Whether we are in danger or at rest, in sickness or health, in life or death, let us be thine, O Lord, and wholly thine.

Hear us in behalf of our country, and grant that it may constantly prosper under thy care, and be defended with thy favorable kindness as with a

shield.

Bless our absent friends, wherever they may be ; preserve them from evil; and, in thy great mercy, permit us to see them again, and rejoice in their society and welfare.

We thank thee, that thou hast thus far preserved us; we thank thee for this opportunity of calling upon thy name; we commend ourselves and our interests to thy holy keeping; and ascribe unto thee all honor and glory, dominion and praise, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Or this.

LORD, our God, who madest heaven, and earth, and sea, and all that therein is, and who keepest thy promise forever; mercifully hear the prayers of thy servants; deliver us from the dangers of the seas; protect and prosper us in the way we go, and bring us to our haven and to our friends in peace; but above all things grant that we may always submit to thy will and pleasure, and obey thy most holy law, and so pass the waves of this changing and troublesome world, that we may finally come to the land of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then may be read other Prayers of the Morning or Evening Service, or else the Benediction may immediately follow.

PRAYER IN STORMS AT SEA.

MOST glorious and gracious Lord God, who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things

below; look down, we beseech thee, and hear us, calling out of the depth of misery; and out of the jaws of this death, which is now ready to swallow us up. Save, Lord, or else we perish. The living, the living shall praise thee. O send thy word of command to rebuke the raging winds and the roaring sea; that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve thee, and to glorify thy name all the days of our life. Hear, Lord, and save us, in the name of our blessed Saviour, thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

TH

not.

'HOU, O Lord, who stillest the raging of the sea, hear, hear us, and save us that we perish

O God, whose Son Jesus Christ did save his disciples ready to perish in a storm ; hear us, and save us, we beseech thee.

Lord be merciful to us sinners, and save us for thy mercies' sake.

THANKSGIVING AFTER A STORM.

Psalm cvii.

THAT men would praise the Lord for his goodness; and declare the wonders that he doeth for the children of men !

That they would offer unto him the sacrifice of thanksgiving; and tell out his works with gladness! They that go down to the sea in ships; and occupy their business in great waters;

These men see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
