PUBLIC WORSHIP.

HYMN 46. 109.

For the morning of the Sabbath.

1 AGAIN the day returns of holy rest,
Which, when he made the world, Jehovah blest;
When, like his own, he bade our labour cease,
And all be piety, and all be peace.

2 Let us devote this consecrated day,
To learn his will, and all we learn obey;
In pure religion's hallow'd duties share,
And join in penitence, and join in prayer.
HYMN 47. s. M.

The Sabbath hailed with joy.

WELCOME sweet day of rest,
That saw the Lord arise;
Welcome to this reviving breast,
And these rejoicing eyes!

The King himself comes near,
To bless his saints to-day;
Here we may meet, and see him here,
And love, and praise, and pray.

3 One day within the place

4

Where thou, my God, hast been,
Is better than ten thousand days
Of vanity and sin.

My willing soul would stay
In such a frame as this,

Till call'd to wing her flight away
To everlasting bliss.

HYMN 48. L. M.

The Sabbath an emblem and type of heaven.
ANOTHER six days' work is done,
Another Sabbath is begun:

Return, my soul, enjoy thy rest,
Improve the day thy God hath bless'd.

Come, bless the Lord, whose love assigns
So sweet a rest to wearied minds;
Provides an antepast of heaven,
And gives this day the food of seven.
O that our thoughts and thanks may rise,
As grateful incense to the skies:

And draw from heaven that sweet repose,
Which none, but he that feels it, knows!
This heavenly calm, within the breast,
Is the dear pledge of glorious rest,
Which for the church of God remains,
The end of cares, the end of pains.

In holy duties let the day,

In holy pleasures, pass away:

How sweet a Sabbath thus to spend,
In hope of one that ne'er shall end.

HYMN 49. C. M.

For a due improvement of the Sabbath.
TO-DAY God bids the faithful rest,
To-day he pours his grace;

"Seek ye my face," the Lord hath said:
Lord, we will seek thy face.

Come, let us leave the things of earth,
With God's assembly join;

Lo! heaven descends to welcome man
To taste the things divine.

The still small voice of heavenly love
Here calls our thoughts away,

4

5

To purer joys, that rise above
The influence of decay.

O may we please our God to-day,
May this be all our care!

Give, Lord, thy grace, lest evil thoughts
Should mingle with our prayer.

Let thy good Spirit help our souls
In faith thy word to hear;

Be with us in thy temple, Lord,
And let us find thee near.

HYMN 50. 6 LINES 8s.

For God's blessing on the means of grace.

1 GREAT God, this sacred day of thine Demands the soul's collected powers; Gladly we now to thee resign

2

3

These solemn, consecrated hours;
O may our souls adoring own
The grace that calls us to thy throne!
Hence, ye vain cares and trifles, fly!
Where God resides appear no more :
All-seeing God, thy piercing eye

Can every secret thought explore:
O may thy grace our bosoms move,
And fix our thoughts on things above!
Thy Spirit's powerful aid impart,

And may thy word, with life divine,
Engage the ear, and warm the heart;
Then shall the day indeed be thine;
Then shall our souls adoring own
The grace that calls us to thy throne.

HYMN 51 6.6.8.

For God's blessing in the sanctuary.

1 IN loud exalted strains

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

The King of glory praise:
O'er heaven and earth he reigns
Through everlasting days;
But Sion, with his presence blest,
In his delight, his chosen rest.

O King of glory, come,

And with thy favour crown
This temple as thy dome,

This people as thine own;
Beneath this roof vouchsafe to show,

How God can dwell with man below.

Now let thine ear attend

Our supplicating cries;
Now let our praise ascend

Accepted to the skies:

Now let thy gospel's joyful sound
Spread its celestial influence round.
Here may the listening throng
Imbibe thy truth and love!
Here Christians join the song
Of Seraphim above:

Till all who humbly seek thy face,
Rejoice in thine abounding grace.

HYMN 52. L. M.

"Lo! I am with you always." JESUS, where'er thy people meet, There they behold thy mercy-seat; Where'er they seek thee thou art found, And every place is hallow'd ground.

Dear Shepherd of thy faithful few,
Thy former mercies here renew;
Here to our waiting hearts proclaim
The sweetness of thy saving name.

Here may we prove the power of prayer,
To strengthen faith and lighten care;
To teach our faint desires to rise,
And bring all heaven before our eyes.

Lord, we are weak, but thou art near :
Nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear:
O rend the heavens, come quickly down,
In
every heart set up thy throne!

HYMN 53. C. M.

For the presence of Christ in the sanctuary.
GREAT Shepherd of thy people hear,
Thy presence now display;

As thou hast given a place for prayer,
So give us hearts to pray.

Within these walls let holy peace,
And love and concord dwell:

Here give the troubled conscience ease,
The wounded spirit heal.

The hearing ear, the melting eye,
The contrite heart bestow;
And shine upon us from on high,

To make our graces grow.

Show us some token of thy love,
Our fainting hope to raise;

And pour thy blessings from above,
That we may render praise.
