1st P. M. 6 lines 88.

Let there be light.
XPAND thy wings, celestial Dove,
Call forth the ray of heavenly love,

And let there in our souls be light;
Illuminate the dark abyss
With glorious beams of endless bliss.
2 Let there be light, again command,

And light there in our hearts shall be; We then, through faith, shall understand

'Thy great mysterious majesty; And, by the shining of thy grace, Behold in Christ thy glorious face. 191

C. M.
His quickening power.
OME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

With all thy quick’ning powers :
Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours. 2 Look how we grovel here below,

Fond of these earthly toys; Our souls, how heavily they go,

To reach eternal joys. 3 In vain we tune our forinal songs,

In vain we strive to rise ; Hosannas languish on our tongies,

And our devotion dies.
4 Father, and shall we ever live

At this poor dying rate;
Our love so faint, so cold to thee,

And thine to us so great!
5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

With all thy quick'ning powers; Come, shed abroad A Saviour's love,

And that shall kindle ours.

6th P. M. 6 lines 79.
The Son glorified.
ATHER, glorify thy Son;

Answer his all-powerful prayer;
Send that Intercessor down;

Send that other Comforter,
Whom, believingly, we claim, -
Whom we ask in Jesus' name.
2 Wilt thou not the promise seal,

Good and faithful as thou art, -
Send the Comforter to dwell

Every moment in our heart!
Yes, thou must the grace bestow :
Truth hath said it shall be so.

C. M.
Life, light, and love.
ANTHRONED on high, Almighty Lord,
The Holy Ghost send down;
Fulfil in us thy faithful word,

And all thy mercies crown.
9 Though on our heads no tongues of fire

Their wondrous powers impart,
Grant, Saviour, what we more desiro,

Thy Spirit in our heart.
8 Spirit of life, and light, and love,

Thy heavenly influence give;
Quicken our souls, our guilt remove,
That we in Christ may live.
4 To our benighted minds reveal

The glories of his grace,
And bring us where no clouds conceal

The brightness of his face,
8 His love within is shed abroad,

Life's ever-springing well; Till God in , und we in God,

In love elocal dwell.

S. M.
The day of Pentecost.
LORD God, the Holy Ghost :
As on the day of Pentecost,

Descend in all thy power. 2 We meet with one accord

In our appointed place,
And wait the promise of our Lord;-

The Spirit of all grace.
3 Like mighty rushing wind

Upon the waves beneath,
Move with one impulse every mind;

One soul, one feeling breathe. 4 The young, the old, inspire

With wisdom from above;
And give us hearts and tongues of fire,

To pray, and praise, and love. 5 Spirit of light, explore,

And chase our gloom away, With lustre shining more and more,

Unto the perfect day. 6 Spirit of truth, be thou

In life and death, our guide; O Spirit of adoption, now

May we be sanctified. 195

L. M. The plenitude of His grace and power. 0

SPIRIT of the living God,

In all thy plenitude of grace, Where'er the foot of man hath trod,

Descend on our apostate race. 2 Give tongues of fire, and hearts of love,

To preach the reconciling word; Give power and unction from above,

Where'er the joyful sound is heard.

3 Be darkness, at thy coming, light;

Confusion--order, in thy path;.
Souls without strength, inspire with might;

Bid merey triumph over wrath.
4 Baptize the nations ; far and nigh
The triumphs of the cross record;
The name of Jesus glorify,

Till every kindred call him Lord. 196

L. M. Peace, love, purity. WHEX first the Spirit left the throne,

He took the semblance of a dove; A symbol chosen to make known

His peace, and purity, and love. 2 When next, at Pentecost, he came,

He stond confess'd to mortal sight Within the cloven tongue of flame,

The type of freedom, guidance, light. 3 Vouchsafe, celestial Dove, thy peace, That we at perfect peaee may be ; Within our hearts thy love increase,-

Within our thoughts, thy purity. 4 0 Light divine ! direct our feet,

Which long in error's paths have trod, Our prison'd souls with freedom greet,

Convince of sin, and lead to God. 197

3 Author of our new creation,

May we all thine influence prove; Alake our souls thy habitation,

Shed abroad the Saviour's love. 4 Source of sweetest consolation,

Breathe thy peace on all below; Bless, O bless this congregation;

On each soul thy grace bestow! 198

P. M. 84, 84.
The Source of every good gift.
Our best Redeemer, ere be breathed

His last farewell,
A Guide - Comforter, bequeath'd,

With us to dwell.
2 He comes, his graces to iinpart;

A willing guest,
While he can find one humble heart

Wherein to rest.
8 And all the good that we possess,

His gift we own;
Yea, every thought of holiness,

And vict'ry won.
4 Spirit of purity and grace,

Our weakness see;
O make our hearts thy dwelling-place,

And worthier thee. 199

9th P. M. 87, 87, 87, 87.
