Old and New Year.

168 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

FOR

OR Thy mercy and Thy grace,
Constant through another year,

Hear our song of thankfulness;
Jesu, our Redeemer, hear.

In our weakness and distress,

Rock of strength, be Thou our stay;

In the pathless wilderness

Be our true and living way.

Who of us death's awful road

In the coming year shall tread;
With Thy rod and staff, O God,
Comfort Thou his dying bed.

Make us faithful, make us pure,
Keep us evermore Thine own,
Help Thy servants to endure,
Fit us for the promised crown.

So within Thy palace gate

We shall praise, on golden strings
Thee the only Potentate,

Lord of lords, and King of kings.

7's.

169

Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.

L.M.

Y Helper God! I bless His Name,

The same His power! His grace the same!

The tokens of His friendly care

Open, and crown, and close the year.

I mid ten thousand dangers stand,
Supported by His guardian hand;
And view, as I survey His ways,
Ten thousand monuments of praise.

Thus far the Lord hath led me on,
Thus far I make His mercies known;
And while I tread this foreign strand,
New mercies shall new songs demand.

My grateful soul, on Jordan's shore,
Shall raise one sacred pillar more;
Then bear to His bright realms above
Ascriptions of immortal love.

A

Psalm lxvii.

RISE, O God, and shine

In all Thy saving might,

And prosper each design

To spread Thy glorious light;

Let healing streams of mercy flow,

That all the earth Thy truth may know.

O bring the nations near,

That they may sing Thy praise;

Let all the people hear,

And learn Thy holy ways!

Reign, mighty God, assert Thy cause,
And govern by Thy righteous laws.

Exert Thy glorious power!

The nations then shall see,

And earth present her store,

In converts born of Thee:

148.

God, our own God, His Church will bless,
And earth shall yield her full increase.

171 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of of the Lord! awake, as in the ancient days.

A

RM of the Lord, awake, awake!

L.M.

Put on Thy strength, the nations shake,

And let the world, adoring, see

Triumphs of mercy wrought by Thee.

Say to the heathen, from Thy throne,
“I am Jehovah, God alone!"
Thy voice their idols shall confound,
And cast their altars to the ground.
Let Zion's time of favour come;
O bring the tribes of Israel home!
And let our wondering eyes behold
Gentiles and Jews in Jesus' fold.
Almighty God, Thy grace proclaim,
Exalt the Saviour's glorious Name,
Let every foe before Him fall,
Confessed, adored, the Lord of all.

FROM

Psalm cxvii.

ROM all that dwell below the skies
Let the Creator's praise arise:
Let the Redeemer's Name be sung
Through every land, by every tongue.
Eternal are Thy mercies, Lord;
Eternal truth attends Thy word :

Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
Till suns shall rise and set no more.

L.M.

173

Come over, and help us.

FROM

ROM Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand,

Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand;
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

What though the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle,
Though every prospect pleases,
And only man is vile;
In vain with lavish kindness
The gifts of God are strown;
The heathen in his blindness

Bows down to wood and stone.

Can we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
Can we to men benighted

The lamp of life deny?
Salvation! O salvation!

The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation

Has learnt Messiah's Name!
